It was Christmas night in 2010, a time for joy, family, and celebration—but for 25-year-old Kashmier James, the holiday ended in an unthinkable tragedy. After spending the day with loved ones, Kashmier stopped to visit a friend in the Hyde Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles. Just moments later, gunfire shattered the quiet night. Kashmier, a nurse and young mother with aspirations of building a brighter future for her three-year-old daughter, was gunned down in a hail of bullets. Her child witnessed the entire ordeal, left to endure a trauma that would haunt her forever.

When investigators arrived, they found 13 spent shell casings scattered near Kashmier’s lifeless body. This wasn’t a robbery—her wallet remained untouched. It was a deliberate act of violence that sent shockwaves through the neighborhood. Despite the bustle of the city and a community teeming with activity, there were no witnesses willing to come forward. The case teetered on the brink of going cold. Kashmier’s family, including her devastated mother, Kimmolita Evans, refused to let her memory fade. Through tearful press conferences and pleas for information, they fought to keep the spotlight on Kashmier’s case. The community rallied with candlelight vigils, yet questions lingered. Who would kill a young mother on Christmas night? And why?

In part two of this two-part case, we are back to the manipulation, crime, and charisma of Daniel Perez, AKA Lou Castro. In part one, we explored Perez’s control over his followers led to a series of suspicious deaths, each conveniently linked to large life insurance payouts that supported the cult's luxurious lifestyle. For part two, we begin to really dig into how Perez's control extended beyond financial exploitation. In the spring of 2011, the 'nail in the coffin' for bringing down Daniel Perez was a recovered hard drive full of incriminating information. We begin to get into the testimonies of three former cult members that would be the catalyst to Perez's arrest and witness testimonies of unimaginable horror that was going on at behind the 'kumbaya' facade of Angel's Landing. We will explore how Daniel Perez convinced his followers that he was a centuries-old supernatural being or angel with special powers, and how he needed to have sex with young girls to stay alive and maintain his power. In part one of this two-part case, Bailey takes us through the investigation into the Angel’s Landing cult. It is a chilling tale of manipulation, crime, and a charismatic leader who preyed on the vulnerable. At the heart of the case is Daniel Perez, also known as Lou Castro, who presented himself as a clairvoyant and prophet. Claiming to have supernatural powers and the ability to foresee the future, Perez lured followers to a secluded compound in Kansas, promising them protection and prosperity. However, behind the façade of spiritual guidance lay a sinister operation. The group was financially supported by the life insurance policies of its members, many of whom met untimely and suspicious deaths. Authorities became suspicious after the death of Patricia (Gomez) Hughes in 2003, officially ruled an accident. The trail led investigators to uncover a web of deceit, coercion, and exploitation spanning years. The Angel’s Landing Cult remains a harrowing reminder of the dangers of an absolute predator manipulating a group of followers with blind devotion.

In the remote reaches of eastern Oregon in 1946, the respected chiropractor and rancher Dr. W.D. Broadhurst met his violent end on a desolate road near Jordan Valley. A Little About Our Guest:

In 2009, Melissa Kim Corter received her bachelor’s degree in psychology while continuing to study with various Indigenous elders’ mentors. In 2019, she returned to school to work on a Ph.D. in depth psychology with an emphasis on Jungian archetypal studies at Pacifica Graduate Institute. She is currently writing her dissertation on psychopathy and the Western Shadow.

Melissa has completed various intensive trainings in ecotherapy, the psychology of fairytales, forensics, shamanic studies, and shadow work. Weaving depth-psychological practices with a shamanic sensibility. For years, she has studied with an elder in southern Arizona who practiced a Peruvian lineage of Shamanism, who taught her soul retrieval, journeying, and many other practices. In addition, Melissa also worked with a second medicine woman in Sedona, Arizona, for five years; she was also a naturopathic physician and healer.

​Her work sometimes makes people uncomfortable as it draws on and celebrates the dark and misunderstood dimensions of the personality. Melissa's unique writing style blends depth psychology with creative and symbolic forms found in film, fairy tales, and forensics. After twenty years as a certified hypnotherapist and consultant, she specialized in the dark night of the soul, psychopathy, and encounters with darkness, so naturally, these themes imbue her writing. 

​Melissa has been published in multiple books, one solo, and a few privately published books, and various compilations. She is a clinical certified hypnotherapist and advanced Yoga Nidra practitioner with over two decades of experience leading thousands of clients and students through various guided practices. Many of her clients have learned how to utilize EFT tapping in a way that works for them with my unique technique. She has over 30 certifications, including body-based healing, Yoga Teacher Training, somatic healing, trauma work, advanced intuitive development and mediumship, and more.

In the morning on Sunday, July 26, 2020, A 911 call was placed by a resident of the Edge Apartments in Miramar, Florida. The resident was calling because she found a two-year-old little boy wandering around the parking lot of the apartment complex unaccompanied by an adult. She had no idea where he came from and couldn’t find anyone around responsible for the toddler. She told the operator that she had seen him between 8:00 and 8:30 that morning and that the little boy was barefoot and wearing only a diaper and a t-shirt. It wasn’t until almost 48 hours later that a family in Alabama recognized the toddler as the son of Leila Cavett. Early on in the investigation, it appeared that Leila traveled from Georgia to Florida with her son under puzzling circumstances. But where was Leila Cavett? Suspicion quickly centered on Shannon Demar Ryan, a self-described “witch” and “spiritual advisor” who was seen accessing Leila’s truck the day after her disappearance, using her debit cards and throwing what appeared to be blood-soaked towels in a dumpster. Despite surveillance evidence, Leila appeared to disappear into thin air. Leila Cavett’s family has been vocal in the search for justice, expressing frustration and heartbreak over the slow progress of the case. The FBI has continued to solicit information from the public, urging anyone with details about Cavett’s movements in Florida or her associations with Shannon Ryan to come forward. Authorities remain hopeful that further forensic evidence or witness statements could lead to finally finding Leila Cavett. Leila is 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighing about 110 pounds. She has brown, shoulder-length hair and brown eyes. She has a tattoo that reads “Kamdyn” on her right arm and a small tattoo of a Christian fish symbol on her right wrist.
