Will This Be On The Test?

This week Austin goes into the 18th-century dance craze sweeping across Europe and America that, well according to some people, was going to cause society to descend into one a lawless orgy. you know, the waltz. the ballroom dancing dance. sometimes also the polka. that dance.

and naturally, we get off-topic and talk about cryptids as we always do. We didn't discuss if we think Bigfoot and Mothman have ever entered a ballroom dancing competition, but it is safe to assume that if they did they won.

This Week Mattie steals Austin's half of the segment and talks about how we are approaching bullying in the wrong way and how we could actually approach the problem. 

Austin flies solo this week. and flies high with an episode about the surprisingly long history of marijuana. Including things like Pliny the Elder, a secret society of assassins, Reefer Madness, and crushing any potential competition in capitalistic fury. sure, 4/20 is next week, but Will This Be on the Test was never good at scheduling things.

This week after discussing 90's movies with really scary monkeys Mattie and Austin go in two very different directions with their topics this week.

Mattie talks about the lost colony of Roanoke and how it wasn't as lost as we were taught it was. She also gets struck by the Roanoke curse as several paragraphs of her notes mysteriously got deleted. Because we got too close to the truth.

Then Austin manages to not get thrown off-topic by sex cults and finally talks about Freud. and More importantly what Freud got wrong and lives forever in our pop culture.

Finally, we have a little announcement. We are changing our format for the next few months. with increased obligations with the world opening up after Covid and Mattie starting a new job, we will be only doing one topic a week and switching back and forth between Mattie and Austin. We plan on going back to the old format soon, but we just needed to scale back the amount of time we spend on research for a bit while we figure out our new schedules.

Austin tries to talk about the Indian Space Research Organization but was super drowsy after his COVID vaccine so he got lost researching and welcomes y'all to join him on his dream-like journey of researching and recording while mostly asleep. He also dunks on Elon Musk. a lot.

Luckily for everyone, Mattie remains as professional as always and talks to us about beloved children's author Beverly Cleary and why she wrote books for children that children could relate to. and why Ralph S Mouse is just so much better than Stewart Little. That may seem like an opinion, but it is just a fact.

We're back after an unexpected week off and we are bringing you an extra rowdy podcast this week! I mean we do talk about the weather because we are still boring adults who have been stuck inside for a year. But still, wild stuff.

Mattie starts off by talking about Mastodons. and you would think it would just be paleontology and some fun fossils. But no. We go into Thomas Jefferson's greatest obsession, some bad science that we felt personally attacked by, and something that even our jaded souls feel some patriotism in.

And Then Austin has his section. and what can we say about his section? I guess it all starts with Oscar Wilde and ends with widespread hysteria across The British Empire about thousands of gay and lesbian German spies using dance to sabotage the war effort during World War I. And also the most taboo subject in society (Both in 1918 and Now,) the existence of women's anatomy.

In this episode, we start off strong by discussing Dr. Seuss. again. Seriously go back and listen to that episode, we go into a lot about the problems in his books.

Then Mattie makes us all mad about daylight savings, why everything we think about it is wrong, why we need to get rid of it, and we reveal yet another reason to hate golf.

Then we speed on ahead to the Concorde jet and why we haven't had a commercial supersonic passenger jet in service since 2003. We also visit the comedy goldmine of airline food.

This week Mattie and Austin ramble a bit more than usual. Austin thinks it is because Quarantimes have driven us completely insane, Mattie thinks it is because we drank a TON of caffeine before recording. We may never know the truth.

Mattie starts us off this week by going into the subtle nuances of Truth, fact, and lies. it is not as cut and dry as we like to think it is.

Then Austin tells us all about air pollution and its long history. Seriously. Thousands of years.

This week, after surviving the frigid depths of extreme cold, Mattie reveals that the beginning of Up does not make her cry, and Austin forgets how to say very basic things.

Austin starts us off this week by talking about Captain Cook and why Hawaiians celebrate his death on Valentine's day and why it a better way to celebrate February 14th.

Then Mattie asks us "Is television literature?" and backs it up with insights from Gilmore Girls, Scrubs and Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

Mattie goes into the history of bathing, why some adolescents refuse to bathe, and how we are bathing wrong. Well, bathing wrong according to dermatologists. Mattie and Austin have their own uninformed and strong opinions.

Then Austin talks about the Hope diamond. The shiny rock that disappointed Austin as a child and he never forgave it for this. Is it really cursed? You'll have to listen to find out.
