Christmas is not just about receiving love. It is also about reciprocating that love for God. On the feast of St. John the Evangelist, we see another way of loving our Lord.

He was in exile for testifying to Jesus, and his entire life was lived for the love of Jesus and for his community, teaching them about the love of God in Christ and exhorting them to be united in love in Christ.

St. John reminds us that it is through an intimate relationship with our Lord that we are able to withstand hardship and suffering, and thus be able to love as God does.

Reflection question: What is preventing us from experiencing and reciprocating God’s love?

The feast of St Stephen, celebrated right after Christmas, serves as a powerful reminder that the joy of Christ’s birth is not just an event in history, but an invitation to welcome Him into our hearts and lives. This celebration calls us to give our all to Christ, just as He gave everything for us.

Like St Stephen, we are invited to immerse ourselves in the Word of God and deepen our relationship with Him through prayer. By doing so, we can learn to imitate Christ in our thoughts, words, and actions.

Let us strive to do all things out of love and for the glory of God. Even if we do not see immediate results from our efforts, let us trust in the Lord’s plan, believing that He will work wonders with what we humbly offer. May we always remember that God, in His perfect time, will bring His will to completion.

Every day, we are called to make choices that shape our lives and reflect our deepest motivations. Today’s readings challenge us to examine the heart behind our decisions. Are we like King Ahaz, driven by fear and pride, or like the Blessed Virgin Mary, who humbly pondered God’s will and embraced it with faith?

Mary’s example of contemplation, discernment, and trust in God invites us to say “yes” to His greater plan. She shows us that with humility and faith, even the seemingly impossible can be accomplished when we align ourselves with God’s will.

Through the miracles in the lives of Samson’s mother, and Zechariah and Elizabeth, God reveals that He can do the impossible—even when all hope seems lost from a human perspective.

God is always in control and patient with us. He does not demand perfection before we can serve Him. Instead, He calls us to trust in His sovereignty, knowing that nothing is impossible for Him. He can write straight with crooked lines, working through our shortcomings, doubts, and struggles.

What areas of our lives have we deemed impossible? How can we surrender these to the Lord and trust in His perfect plan?

Jesus fulfils the prophecy of the coming of a virtuous king who will “reign as true king”. Jesus shows us how we should lead - with integrity, mercy and to put the needs of the community before ourselves.

How can we collaborate with God to build His Kingdom through our roles as leaders and followers in our lives?

Faith is a prerequisite to receive the grace and mercy of God. However the faith we have is often imperfect. Like the crowd, we could be among followers of Christ but not recognise His true identity. Or like the blind men who recognised Jesus as the Messiah, we could have an inaccurate understanding of His true purpose on earth.

Let us pray for the grace to truly recognise Christ as our Lord, and for the grace to appreciate the responsibilities that comes with the gifts that God has given us – not for our own benefit, but for the service of Him.

Reflection question: How have I used the gifts that I have received from God, for the service of His Kingdom?

There are many things of this world that tend to disturb our peace – fragmented relationships, unstable political situations in the world, our fears of the future, and so forth. How can we attain peace; peace that will last even amidst the turmoils that surround us?

It is only in Christ that we can find peace for our souls. We need to depend on our Lord – not on ourselves. No amount of our human effort, even that of science, technology, or military power, will be able to give us the everlasting peace that Christ alone can give us. Let us dwell on His Divine Word as we seek to grow in intimacy with Him, the Prince of Peace.

The Lord desires to restore all of humanity! He desires to deliver us from all our fears and even of death. He is the fulfilment of God’s promises which were preached by the prophet Isaiah. Question is, do we place our trust in Him – or do we instead seek to be fulfilled by other things of this world that will in fact never be able to satisfy our longings?

The feast day of St Francis Xavier and the season of Advent call to mind the importance of hope. Hope is what motivates us to continue living despite the struggles that we face, and sustains us in our efforts to do good in spite of our weariness and desolations. What is most important, however, is that we find our hope in Christ our Lord – and share this gift with others.

Scripture warns us of the end of time and shows us the destructive impact of sin. One of the greatest sin is the worship of self. When we do not use the Word of God as our point of reference on how we live our lives, and live based on what we think is right, it leads to destruction of values and life.

But we are reminded that God will always prevail over sin. He judges fairly, he punishes justly. We are called to be firm in our faith, to be rooted in the Word of God and to walk in the way of Truth.
