There's no one right way to feel about what you are going through right now, but it is a great thing that we can feel.
We are not meant to be happy all of the time, and it's OK to feel sad, mad, or stressed. Mr. and Mrs. Watson in the Mercy Watson children's books series are always naively oblivious to the world around them. When their special big does something crazy, when their neighbor gets upset, they always respond with rapturous, positive thoughts.
We love these types of characters, and laugh about their simple approach to life because we know that life is more complex than that. We want to feel a range of emotions, because it allows us to be human and experience the world.
Too often we push our emotions back down with food, drink or facebooking. Instead, we can choose to feel them, and let them move through us.
But, how do we feel them?
I've created an acronym to describe the process of feeling your feelings that I learned from Brooke Castillo and other great thinkers.
It's called WONDER:
W-Ask W Questions
What am I feeling?
O- Observe
Listen to yourself. Trust that you know what’s going on.
N-Name it
Ex: “It’s just stress.” “I’m feeling stressed.”
D-Describe it
Feel the feeling. See where it’s located in your body. What does it feel like exactly? Try to explain it as if you are describing it to someone else.
E-Embrace it.
Feelings come from thoughts in my brain. I should have this feeling. Thoughts and feelings are independent of who I really am. What’s awesome about this feeling? What purpose does it serve? I can “Do” this emotion.
R-Release or Resolve it.
Feel it and let it go without judgement. Or, decide that you want to work on it and start thinking about it in terms of the model.
