Winning Minds

I.C.E.

"Intelligence, Character, and Ethic. Work hard if you want to be respected."

Dropping a new Winning Minds-inspired song!

This track was inspired, originally, by the episode where I read MLK Jr's essays, "The Purpose of Education" (go back and listen to the episode - it's a good one). And then over the next several episodes, the guests continued to provide confirmation and inspiration. So here it is!

Listen and share it with someone who would benefit from it and enjoy the music.

Thank you for listening. I hope it contributes to your next winning decision.

My guest is another WINNING MIND from history:

He was born in Ireland in 1898. His mother died when he was 10, and 1 month later he moved to England to attend school. He later joined the British army and fought in WW1. He was a friend if J.R.R. Tolkien, author of the “Lord of the Rings.” He was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century and arguably one of the most influential writers of his day. He was a Fellow and Tutor in English Literature at Oxford University until 1954, when he was unanimously elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement. [He] wrote more than thirty books, allowing him to reach a vast audience, and his works continue to attract thousands of new readers every year. One of his works is the classic series: The Chronicles of Narnia.

Who is this WINNING…and apparently, WRITING MIND? It is Clive Staples Lewis, also known as CS Lewis.

This reading is called “On Living in an Atomic Age” is just one of the many essays in a book called “Present Concerns.” It is a collection of essays CS Lewis wrote and published during his life. It speaks of an Atomic Bomb, which I think is relevant to us now, but could also be substituted with the threat of pandemic, war, famine, or whatever else seems to threaten us any given year.

Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy this, and that it challenges you to think and live, and that it contributes to your next WINNING decision.

What does success mean to you? Roberto Rivera knew what he wanted but getting there did not necessarily go as he planned. Despite losses and setbacks, he continued working towards success as he defined it. This is part 3 of Coach Rivera’s WINNING story. I strongly encourage you to go back and listen to parts 1 and 2. You will be able to understand and appreciate this part that much more.

Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy it and that it contributes to your next winning decision.

Wrong place, wrong time, or right place, right time? It wasn’t just that, but for Roberto Rivera it was also resilience, relationships, and decisions. He is the only one, out of 13 brothers and sisters, to graduate high school. But then he also went on to graduate from college and even became an officer in the United States Army. Trust me, there is a whole lot more to this WINNING story.

This is part 2 of my conversation with Coach Rivera. If you haven’t heard part 1, go back and listen and then come back and catch part 2.

Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy it and that it contributes to your next winning decision.

He found himself homeless at 16 years old… but two things kept him motivated: he just wanted to, one day, be a good father, and make his mom proud. Roberto Rivera faced more than his fair-share of adversity, but somehow, he made it. He accomplished those goals, and a whole lot more!

This is part 1 of a three, yes 3! part series with Coach Rivera. It’s that good.

Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy it and that it contributes to your next winning decision.

"I am the boys and girls club." No, this is not a late commercial for the "Big Game", but these are the words of Matthew Juwon Jeffries, aka Juice. Born and raised in Gainesville GA, struggling with an unfortunate home-life, Juice ran to the Boys and Girls Club. It became his 2nd home. It was there that men began mentoring him and helping him develop the self-awareness and character that define who he is today. And now his passion is to do the same for other young men.

Thank you for listening to this episode. I really enjoyed getting to know him, and I hope you do to.

Alan Griffin is the head coach of the girls’ varsity basketball team at Gainesville High School. I really enjoyed this conversation with Coach Griffin as we talked about taking advantage of the small opportunities that come your way, because those little ones bring you closer to bigger ones. He also spoke about how games are won and lost; seasons are good, and seasons are bad…but growth and relationships last a lot longer than any particular joy after winning or pain after losing. This is truly a winning conversation about creating memories and teaching lessons.

Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoy this episode, and that it contributes to your next winning decision.

Quaris Franklin grew up in trouble. At 12 years old he began running away from home, and for the next 5 years he was in an out of Youth Detention Centers. At 17, he landed in jail. His life was full of pain, rejection, and violence… until several years ago. It all changed when he changed. Now he has gotten married, started a family, started several businesses and even a mentorship program for young men. This episode is not just a story of redemption, but of hope and character building. It is a WINNING episode.

Thank you for listening. I hope you not only enjoy it, but that it contributes to your next Winning decision.

Adrian Cromwell is an assistant principal at Gainesville High School, a school of nearly 2,500 students. I’ve gotten to know Mr. Cromwell as I’ve recently began mentoring at the high school. One thing I learned from the start is he is very humble, and very visible and active within the student population. He has heart and passion to see our young men and women become successful and overcome the challenges they face in life. I enjoyed this conversation because you can hear his energy as well as observe the strength of character and the WINNING MIND that brought him to where he is today.

Thank you for listening to this episode. I hope you enjoy it, and that it contributes to your next winning decision.
