  • Day 1615 – Bible Study – The NET Bible and Commentaries – Meditation Monday
Welcome to Day 1615 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Bible Study – The NET Bible and Commentaries – Meditation MondayWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps; thanks for coming along on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy Today is Day 1615 of our Trek, and it is time for Meditation Monday. Taking time to relax, refocus, and reprioritize our lives is crucial in order to create a living legacy. For you, it may just be time alone for quiet reflection. You may utilize structured meditation practices. In my life, Meditation includes reading and reflecting on God’s Word and in prayer. It is a time to renew my mind, refocus on what is most important, and making sure that I am nurturing my soul, mind, and body. As you come along with me on our trek each Meditation Monday, it is my hope and prayer that you, too, will experience a time for reflection and renewing of your mind.
We are continuing our series this week on Meditation Monday as we focus on Mastering Bible Study through a series of brief insights from Hebrew Scholar, Dr. Michael S. Heiser. Our current insights are focusing on practical tools for Bible study. Today let us meditate on:
Bible Study – The NET Bible and Commentaries· Insight Seventy-Five: Use the NET Bible
Are you the kind of person who likes to use things until they can no longer be fixed? Some people don’t want to upgrade until whatever their use passes the point of being inconvenient but workable to be useless, even dangerous. Admit it: we all have something that’s “good enough for what we need to do.” In those cases, if we are honest, we also have to admit that when we do upgrade, we wonder why we waited so long.
That’s how it will be when you start using the (New English Translation) NET Bible.
What’s the NET Bible? Close your eyes and think about the study Bible you’re using. Can you see the tiny footnotes scattered through your translation here and there? They direct your attention to a few words at the bottom of the page, maybe suggesting another translation or something about a manuscript. There aren’t that many, but they’re helpful. Have you got that fixed in your mind? Now give your study Bible a performance-enhancing drug, maybe a growth hormone. The NET Bible is what all other study Bibles want to be when they grow up.
I’m not kidding. The NET Bible is freely available online at netbible.org and is a translation created by dozens of scholars experienced in Bible translation. It has over 60,000 notes, most of which explain precisely why the translators did what they did or how a different manuscript reading might affect translation. The preface to the NET Bible explains why it’s distinctive:

The translator’s notes make the original languages far more accessible, allowing you to look over the translator’s shoulder at the very process of translation. This documentation level is a first for a Bible translation, making transparent the textual basis and the rationale for key renderings (including major interpretive options and alternative translations).
There’s no other tool that comes close to it for English readers who don’t know Greek and Hebrew. If you are growing in your Bible study skills, at some point, you need to breach the English translation. The NET Bible has an unparalleled focus on the biblical text and the decisions the English translators made.
    · Insight Seventy-Six: Acquire a Clear, Succinct Theological Dictionary
Of the many tools for Bible study available today, commentaries are among the most familiar. A commentary might be a tool you associate with your pastor, but every serious Bible student should use them. But all commentaries are not the same.

Welcome to Day 1614 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomChange Begins With Caring – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on our trek to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16andversion=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver! Today is Day 1614 of our Trek, and it’s time for another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today’s trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let’s jump right in with today’s nugget:
Today’s quote is from Margaret J. Wheatley, and it is: All change, even very large and powerful change, begins when a few people start talking with one another about something they care about.
    Change Begins With Caring
To start a change in your personal life and the world you impact, you must care enough to follow through with the change. Even massive changes in the world begin when just a few individuals get together and share what they care about. Through this tiny seed of care, passion, and faith, significant changes have their nucleus. It does not require a lot of resources, time, or effort to begin that change process in your life and the world you impact, just a tiny spark of desire to make the change. Just like a tiny spark can set an entire forest on fire, or the smallest flame to shine in the darkness, so it is with making changes in our world. It is the consistent small steps over time that will allow nations to rise or fall. It is the consistent small steps over time that enable great success, or failure. It is also the small, consistent steps over time that will build God’s kingdom on earth. Over the past 2,000 years, from a handful of loyal disciples, the church of Christ has grown into a body of untold millions. This growth will continue until the day when Jesus Christ will return to establish the new Eden where heaven and earth combine. That is the change that we are seeking, and it only requires that you have the faith of a mustard seed that grows into a mighty tree. It only requires that you have the faith of a small measure of yeast to impact the whole batch of dough.

    https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2013%3A33andversion=NLT (Matthew 13:33)
Jesus also used this illustration: “The Kingdom of Heaven is like the yeast a woman used in making bread. Even though she put only a little yeast in three measures of flour, it permeated every part of the dough.”
    https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke+13%3A18-19andversion=NLT (Luke 13:18-19)
Then Jesus said, “What is the Kingdom of God like? How can I illustrate it? It is like a tiny mustard seed that a man planted in a garden; it grows and becomes a tree, and the birds make nests in its branches.”
As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, I would ask you to please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along on Monday for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.’

  • Day 1613 – A Driven Person – Daily Wisdom
Welcome to Day 1613 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom.A Driven Person – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Today is Day 1613 of our Trek, and it’s time for another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today’s trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let’s jump right in with today’s nugget of wisdom:
Today’s quote is from Gordon McDonald, and it is: No driven person could ever say what John the Baptiser said, because driven people have to keep gaining more and more attention, more and more power, more and more material assets. The seductions of the public life would have led to a competitive posture, but the original call to commitment from within spoke louder.
    A Driven Person
I hate to admit it, but this quote hit a little too close to home. While my mindset is moderating somewhat as I mature both in age and my outlook on life, I still struggle with a very driven personality. I enjoy winning. I enjoy gaining attention. I appreciate material assets. I enjoy having authority and using it. I suspect that many of you have struggled with these same issues, regardless of whether you are introverted or extroverted. While there is nothing wrong with winning, gaining attention, material assets, or authority, our mindset, and motives that underlie the pursuit of them can lead us down an evil path. Just imagine if John the Baptiser had the attitude we do, how would that have impacted his life and relationship with his cousin, Jesus Christ. John was gaining ever-increasing popularity, with thousands coming to listen to him. Many of these same people believed in him and were baptized. It would have been effortless for him to start thinking that he was something special, which in God’s eyes he was. That was not his position or calling in life. He was to be the proclaimer and forerunning of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Yet, with his growing popularity, John could have thought it was all about him. Jesus even backed this up when he said in Luke 7:28 https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Luke%207%3A28andversion=NLT (Luke 7:28) I tell you, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John.
I know if Jesus said that about me, I would think I was pretty important. Fortunately, John understood his place in the creation and redemption story. Just to make sure that other people at the time also understood, God permitted John to be executed when his ministry was complete. There could be no confusion on who was the Messiah. In the second half of the verse above, Jesus focused on how vital His kingdom was when he said. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of God is greater than he is!
So I have to ask myself, and I will ask you also, are you an imager of God reflecting Jesus Christ in your life, or do you come off as an imager of yourself? I know I have work to do in this area, how about you? John the Baptist knew his position when he proclaimed in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark%201%3A7andversion=NLT (Mark 1:7) John announced: “Someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not even worthy to stoop down like a slave and untie the straps of his sandals.
As you ponder this nugget of daily wisdom yourself, I would ask you to please encourage your friends and...

  • Day 1612 – Begin Now, Today – Daily Wisdom
Welcome to Day 1612 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomBegin Now, Today – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Today is Day 1612 of our Trek, and it’s time for another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today’s trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let’s jump right in with today’s nugget:
Today’s quote is from Louis L’Amour, and it is: Your life always restarts today. Every morning is a beginning, a fresh start, and you needn’t be hog-tied to the past. Whatever went before, your life can begin now, today.
    Begin Now, Today
I understand that the consequences of past decisions will impact your future, but it does not need to control your destiny. Every new day brings new opportunities to begin again. Why should you remain tied to your past when you have the choice and ability to untie the rope that binds you. A hog is one of the most challenging animals to tie up effectively because it is hard to hold onto, and their legs are short and taper smaller the closer to the hoof. If you have ever had the experience of tieing up a hog, you will better understand the quote for today on how secure a rope must be to keep the hog tied up. So it is with our past, if we allow it to be. There is one significant difference between you and the hog. You have a sharp knife to cut the rope and free yourself from the past, but you have to choose to use the knife. If you just lay the pigpen of your past, feeling sorry for yourself, thinking that there is no hope, then you will never be free. Each new day you have to make that choice. Will you cut the ties that bind and set yourself free, or will you be content to be where you are? At the beginning of each new day, give thanks to the God of all creation. Live renewed knowing that God’s mercies are also new every day. Free yourself from the shackles of the past.

    Lamentations 3:22-23
The faithful love of the Lord never ends!
    His mercies never cease.
    Great is his faithfulness;
his mercies begin afresh each morning

    https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%208%3A36andversion=NLT (John 8:36)
So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.

Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let’s jump right in with today’s nugget:
Today’s quote is from Martin Luther King, Jr., and it is: "Even if they try to kill you, you develop the inner conviction that there are some things so precious, some things so eternally true that they are worth dying for. And if a person has not found something to die for, that person isn't fit to live!
    Worth Dying For
These are pretty strong words, which were said by a man who had a firm conviction that we are all created as imagers of God. Because of his belief that every person should be treated with dignity and respect, he was willing to die for what he believed. In fact, Martin Luther King Jr. did die for his beliefs as he was assassinated on April 4, 1968. As Christ-followers, we should also have such a firm conviction for our faith that we are willing to be martyred instead of denying our believing loyalty for Jesus Christ and His kingdom. I can’t speak for you, but although I would like to think my faith is that strong, I know my own weaknesses. If my life or the life of a family member were threatened, I am not convinced in my heart, that I would be willing to die. So I will ask you, what in your life is worth dying for? Is your faith in God, your believing loyalty in God through the sacrificial atonement of Jesus Christ strong enough that you would be willing to die? One last question, what in your life is also worth living for? Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.

    https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark%208%3A34%2D36andversion=NLT (Mark 8:34-36)
Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?

We are continuing our series this week on Meditation Monday as we focus on Mastering Bible Study through a series of brief insights from Hebrew Scholar, Dr. Michael S. Heiser. Our current insights are focusing on practical tools for Bible study. Today let us meditate on:
Bible Study – Software and Dictionaries· Insight Seventy-Three: Buy Bible Software-Then Use It
I recommend that you buy (and use) Bible software. Unless you’d rather have a rotary phone, like to wash dishes and clothes by hand, or yearn for the days of the Ford Model T, you want Bible software. I realize there might be some people out there in the world that have enough time to experience the thrill of spending weeks or months on a Bible study task that my software can do in less than a second, but I’m not that guy. We still have monks and monasteries, but the monastic age is history.
There’s nothing like having Bible software when it comes to Bible study. It isn’t an issue of laziness or wanting to do Bible study as fast as possible to move on to the rest of your day. No way. Bible study still takes discipline: it isn’t a ritual act. That isn’t what lightning speed for processing searches in the Bible is about. The speed allows you to get more done, not pave the way to do less. This is what technology is all about: how to do something with greater accuracy, efficiency, and frequency. Bible software is a boon in all those respects.
In the old days (forty years ago, not the days of the apostles), scholars had a few reference works that would enable them to do tasks like look up all the occurrences of a word in the Bible. But they would have to manually navigate to each passage to make sure that the handwork responsible for that reference work was accurate. Even then, the tools to search for anything beyond a single word, or words in books besides the Bible, just didn’t exist.

All of that is a reality today. This is particularly true because of Bible software companies’ massive biblical studies libraries. You can find discussions of anything you’re looking for in thousands of books all at the same time, even in books that have no indexes of their own. Bible software also enables Bible students who don’t read Hebrew and Greek to search in those languages. The software that I use and recommend is Logos Bible Software. It contains thousands of reference materials that can be integrated and indexed for comprehensive Bible Study. There’s literally nothing like it on the planet.

  • Day 1609 – Nothing But Ambition – Daily Wisdom
Welcome to Day 1609 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomNothing But Ambition – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! Today is Day 1609 of our Trek, and it’s time for another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today’s trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let’s jump right in with today’s nugget:
Today’s quote is from Brian Tracy, and it is: At least eighty percent of millionaires are self-made. That is, they started with NOTHING but ambition and energy, the same way most of us start.
    Nothing But Ambition
While this quote is about financial success, the same applies to every area of our lives. Most people do not start in life with an abundance of wealth, talents, abilities, intellect, or wisdom. All of these are gained by those who are willing to start with nothing. Through perseverance, ambition, and energy, over a long period, incrementally achieving until they are successful. Those who are eager to put their blood, sweat, and tears into action are those who end up being millionaires, successful in business, excellent in academic achievement, or whatever their calling is, making a significant impact on the world for God’s kingdom. Not everyone has the same talents and abilities, but we all have some. God does not expect us to achieve in areas where He has not given us abilities. God does expect us to use the talents and skills that He has given to us thoroughly and for His glory. You may become a millionaire or excel in any number of areas of life, but that is not nearly as important as doing your very best with what God has given you. God does expect us to use what we have been given. It has been said that God does take care of the birds, but he does not throw worms in their nest. They must use the natural abilities that God has given them to find the worms. I believe a parable from Jesus, which he told just a week before being crucified, will sum up our nugget of wisdom for today. The parable is found in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+25%3A14-30andversion=NLT (Matthew 25:14-30)
“Again, the Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip. He called together his servants and entrusted his money to them while he was gone. He gave five bags of silver to one, two bags of silver to another, and one bag of silver to the last—dividing it in proportion to their abilities. He then left on his trip.
“The servant who received the five bags of silver began to invest the money and earned five more. The servant with two bags of silver also went to work and earned two more. But the servant who received the one bag of silver dug a hole in the ground and hid the master’s money.
“After a long time their master returned from his trip and called them to give an account of how they had used his money. The servant to whom he had entrusted the five bags of silver came forward with five more and said, ‘Master, you gave me five bags of silver to invest, and I have earned five more.’
“The master was full of praise. ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’

Today is Day 1608 of our Trek, and it’s time for another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today’s trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let’s jump right in with today’s nugget:
Today’s quote is from Russell Simmons, and it is: Your happiness ultimately comes from the way you work, not where you work.
    The Way You Work
Nearly everyone is constantly pursuing personal happiness. We don’t fully understand, or we don’t choose to acknowledge that happiness is based on happenstances, that is to say, external influences of which we may or may not have complete control over. If our happiness depends on those factors we do not have control over, we can never be truly happy. We need to focus our happiness on those situations where we have at least some control element. Let’s consider your workplace regardless of whether you work from home, an office, a factory, a construction site, or a fast-food business. Not every job or location will be ideal, and some days will be better than others. It depends more on the way you work. If you focus on the good that your work brings to the world, it will allow you to take pride in a job well done, regardless of how mundane it may appear. All work serves a purpose and has value. Your job may be doing laundry, mopping up spills, repetitive assembly work, pounding a hammer, or performing heart surgery. It all has a purpose. Instead of focusing on where you work, focus on the way you work and how it does bring value to others. In addition to the happiness that your work brings to others, it also can bring happiness to you because you know you have done your best with what you have been tasked to complete. In addition to happiness, which will be allusive at times, as Christ-followers, we need to seek peace and joy from within. You can have peace and joy regardless of the storms that may surround you. Only God can provide true peace and joy. When you find peace and joy, it is then you will also find happiness.

    https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans%2015%3A13andversion=NLT (Romans 15:13)
I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Today is Day 1607 of our Trek, and it’s time for another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today’s trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let’s jump right in with today’s nugget:
Today’s quote is from Zig Ziglar, and it is: You can change. You can be more than you are.
    You Can Change
Change for all of us is difficult, but not impossible for any of us. Some adapt to change easier than others, but it is still a struggle. We like familiarity. We want the known. Change produces anxiety because of the unknown. The only constant in the world today is that it is constantly changing. Change in and of itself is neither good nor bad. It can be either. It is up to each of us to bend the change we experience in our lives towards good. Where we are in life is a direct result of how we have adapted to change. If you are stuck in mediocrity and don’t feel you are making any progress, it is a direct result of not capitalizing on the change coming into your life. You can change for the better. You can be a better you tomorrow than you are today. It boils down to how you are confronting and managing that change which you encounter each day. Are you guiding the winds of change, or are they guiding you? Instead of fearing change choose to face it directly and make the choices that will allow you to benefit from that change.
I am sure there are those who observe where granny and I are in life and feel that somehow we have been more fortunate than others. This is just not true. We both came from low-income families. We have been through a lot of difficulties in our lives. We have faced many changes, but we have adapted and turned them around so that we could become more than we were. We learned the challenging lessons that change brings to each of us, and by God’s grace and mercy, we have persevered. Yes, at each step in our journey, we sought wisdom from God and others to make wise choices, but we never quit or gave up. So face the change with confidence and become more than you are today.

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do.

Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. Our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Today is Day 1606 of our Trek, and it’s time for another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today’s trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let’s jump right in with today’s nugget:
Today’s quote is from Woodrow Wilson, and it is: You are not here merely to make a living. You are here to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, and with finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world. You impoverish yourself if you forget this errand.
    Enable the World
It probably has always been the case throughout history, but it seems like we are living in a very selfish and self-centered world today. We are always looking out for #1, summed up in the famous song “My Way” sung by Frank Sinatra in 1969. “I did it My Way” seems to have become a mantra for many a self-made man or woman. This may come to shock most of us, but the universe does not circle us. Even in our work, we are not just working for our benefit or working to survive.
God did not create us to live for ourselves but so that we can enable the world to live more abundantly. As Christ-followers and image-bearers of God, we are to provide the world with hope and achievement. We are to enrich the others and prepare them for God’s kingdom. If we live only for ourselves, then we do the world a disservice and are not fulfilling our high-calling granted to us by God. It is the evil one that limits humankind’s growth and advancement. Jesus instructs us in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%2010%3A10andversion=NLT (John 10:10) The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. We make ourselves and all the world impoverished when we do not do our very best. Our best is to fulfill our God-given potential in our world. We are God’s masterpiece; to live as if we are not is to deny the very power of God. We were created to live in Eden, and through the building of God’s kingdom on earth, God will restore a new Eden where we will serve with our sibling Jesus Christ, as was His original plan. God will merge heaven and earth, which has been planned since the beginning of creation. God’s plan may have been delayed, but never canceled.

    https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ephesians%202%3A10andversion=NLT (Ephesians 2:10)
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
