This episode features a story about a time when I had to face perhaps the biggest challenge of my life. Physically, mentally, and emotionally, I was pushed to the edge, literally. As I attempted to climb to the top of a huge mountain, Huayna Picchu, in Peru, I was unprepared for the journey ahead. This is a climb that rises over 1000 feet in elevation, and all of it is almost straight up. The path and stairways are primitive. They even named part of the trail “The Stairs of Death!”

What do you do when you want to quit and turn back, but know you can’t live with yourself if you do? How do you approach those kinds of challenges? In this episode, we discuss seven steps that will support you when you make a commitment to break a habit, start a new habit, accept a challenge, set a new goal, or pursue something you’re passionate about.

Those steps:

1. Commit. Make the commitment to complete the task at hand. If you’re new at this, start small. The goal is to set yourself up to succeed!
2. Prepare. What do you need to do to help you be successful? Set boundaries. Build in accountability. Reward yourself with boxes to check each day, or find a way to track your progress!
3. Stop now and then to Breathe! Sometimes when I begin a new endeavor, I’m afraid if I stop, I will never start again. I don’t like breaking my streaks, so instead, I often burn out. I don’t allow room for rest. You can run 10 marathons, but not all at once! So give yourself some grace and allow yourself and life to unfold around your pursuit. * The exception? If you are trying something like quitting smoking, you may not want to give yourself permission to slip. The addiction to nicotine is strong and in that case, you don’t want to experience a huge setback! Set yourself up to win.
4. Ask for help. You can ask others, or you can pray, and ask God or angels or a loved one to help you with the challenge before you. There is a spiritual law of non-interference that says your guardian angel cannot step in unless you ask… so don’t forget to ask!
5. Perspective. It helps to get a perspective on how far you’ve come, and how far you have left to go. Don’t allow either of those to discourage you but do give yourself credit for the progress you’ve made.
6. Expect Setbacks. With any good challenge, you are most likely going to experience a setback. Go with it. Don’t let it derail your motivation. I like to plan for it so that when it arrives, I’m ready. But that’s my controlling nature! Setbacks are not an excuse to quit. But sometimes, no matter what we do, progress is not being made. In that case, it’s always good to evaluate and determine how to pivot or change the timing. That comes from a gut feeling, a knowing, not from our ego that tells us to give up. So pay close attention to where the information is coming from.
7. CELEBRATE! Bask in the glory of accomplishing your goal. It doesn’t matter if you set the goal for seven days or seven we

This is the second episode in a 2-part series. In Episode 1, we discussed five tools to help us navigate through the darkness. In this episode, we discuss five more tools to use before, during or after our darkest hours.

Using the tools of:

1. Acceptance. Not tolerance, but acceptance. Whatever is there, accept it.
2. Support. Knowing how to choose the right kind of support is very important because when you are going through darkness, you are raw and vulnerable. Harsh people, places and things can be very damaging.
3. Boundaries. Understanding and using boundaries are essential at any stage of life!
4. Professional Support. We don’t have to do this alone. It’s easy for some of us to shut everyone out, but the truth is, we need each other. Find a good coach, therapist, trauma specialist, or someone who can give you objective feedback with compassion, without compromise.
5. Mindfulness. Believe it or not, this tool is one powerful tool! Practicing mindfulness brings to the present and out of the future or past. Meditation, Breathwork, Visualizations, Grounding, Forest Bathing… there are so many ways to practice mindfulness.

Continuing our discussion from our last episode, we are further exploring how to have the courage to work through our own vulnerability and brokenness.

We explore our need to connect to our own Spirit and our awareness of how that connects us to some sort of Higher Power, God, whatever you might call that. We discuss a lot about the relationship between Love and Spirituality and our connection to Spirit and how that relates to our own vulnerability.

How does religion differ from spirituality, and can you have both?

What do you put your faith in?

How do we look for Light and connect to our Higher Power when we are walled off and shut down? What happens when a child is born into a home of trauma and abuse… can they still find that Light? Yes, because that Light is within. We come into this world carrying that Light. And sometimes others reflect that Light back to us… they see us, they see our Light, and it reminds us that we have it.

Be Light to others. Be Light for others. And look for it in others as well. And when you do, eventually, it’s going to be okay. You will get through the darkness.

Make a difference, and walk someone closer to finding their own Light.

We go spiritually deep in this episode. Beginning with a quote from Mark Nepo: “Being broken is never fun. No one seeks being broken. No one asks for it. But like erosion, being broken is a developmental phase of growth, not a deficiency. We have stigmatized being broken as a sign of damage or weakness. Yet mysteriously, it is being broken open that leads to all transformation. Rather than deny or resist this phase of growth - it is inevitable we might better focus our efforts on mapping the new terrain on the other side of the break. What new way of thinking, feeling, or being are we being led to?”

How do people endure extreme challenges in life? How do we navigate when those ‘perfect storms’ arrive at our doorstep? How many hard things can we do all at once? Being broken open is raw and sometimes excruciatingly painful. We have to limit our exposure to toxic people and energy-draining activities. Friends and family often don’t know how to help us when we are broken, so they stay away or worse, become boundary-less with their support. It can be very isolating. When we are vulnerable, we naturally withdraw. But that often means we are left alone in our darkest hours.

We also explore how we use control to navigate these difficult seasons of life. And how control actually makes it worse in the long run. As a recovering control freak, I share how that need to control takes root in the most vulnerable times and often strangles my own growth.

In this episode, we are sharing more stories of brokenness and vulnerability with you. Not to become victims of our own stories, but because if we are here to grow and deepen our connection to God, to one another, and to life itself, we have to know how to not only break open… but how to let our vulnerability be known… and then to allow the energy of growth to take root in our hope and our faith…. In this episode, we explore what the ‘secret sauce’ is when it comes to manifesting our biggest dreams! If it were as simple as asking for what we want, wouldn’t we be getting better results?

As we go through our stories and conversations, we explore the difference between manifesting what our EGO wants and manifesting a heart’s desire. Both are possible, but one has the limitations of the ego mind, and the other holds the possibilities of connecting and creating with a power greater than ourselves.

We discuss when and why we stopped holding childlike wonder! When and why did we stop daydreaming? How does trauma and hardship impact our ability to dream big dreams? What causes us to think we have to do all of this on our own? Even manifesting what we want?

We are so much more than what is contained in this human vessel of ours! We are far more expansive than the human condition we are living in right now. What limiting beliefs are holding you back? Are you dreaming from hope or dreaming from fear? Dreaming from scarcity or dreaming from possibilities? Are you attached at all to the outcome? All of those answers give you a roadmap to your direct route to manifestation. Including all the detours you might create without knowing it! You can see where those limiting beliefs stop you from reaching the destination… or robbing you of the joy you could be having just in the journey alone!

Today we are discussing the way that holiday traditions play out. Some continue to serve us well. Some had to change because circumstances changed. Some traditions fell away and no longer exist. And still others are ones we continue to do but wish we didn’t have to.

Traditions hold us together. They remind us that we belong to something bigger than us individually. They connect us to our values and memories. And sometimes, they become obligations, not traditions, leaving us filled with resentment and frustration, especially over the holidays.

In this episode, we talk about the people pleaser and how she can over-commit, become passive aggressive, angry, depressed and anxious around holiday expectations to uphold certain traditions.

What do you do when you need to step out of a family tradition?

How do you navigate the disappointment of others when you choose to take care of your own needs in place of a family tradition?

What happens when you merge your favorite traditions with a partner, and/or create new traditions that nudge out those with your family of origin?

What if truth is really about our perceptions? And the actual TRUTH lies outside of that perception?

The story: Admittedly, my children have been my greatest teachers over the years. And this lesson was incredibly powerful for me!  I share the story of a time when I based what was happening on what I saw, with my own eyes, firsthand!

I didn’t allow room for any other possibility because to me, because truth was simply black and white and based on what I see.  In this story, I saw, I took action, and imposed consequences on my son for his behavior.  And I was wrong.

We also address the need to be curious. To investigate others’ actions before making assumptions. When we are rigid with what we think we know, we don’t leave room for the whole TRUTH to emerge. 

We also talk about the need for listening! Ask good questions before coming to conclusions.  

Be willing to admit when you are wrong! And clean it up! Make amends. Saying we are sorry is one thing but sharing what you learned makes it more impactful.

Last, remember, FEELINGS ARE NOT FACTS!

Sometimes our feelings are so intense that we begin to validate what we suspect rather than what is factual. Our ego will collect evidence to prove our point.  And that clouds our perception of what is actually going on! 

How often are you engaged in self-reflection and personal growth?

How well do you listen? To yourself? To your intuition? To others?

THE STORY: How do you pull out of a spiral of things going wrong when they happen, one after another? During this episode, we discuss a powerful tool to change a trajectory that results in things not going well. The first step is to gain awareness of your thoughts. What do you hear in your head when something goes wrong?
The practice of gratitude is often discussed. We usually use gratitude when things are working period thank you for that blessing. Giving thanks when things are going well is easy. But when things start going wrong... when things don't go as planned... When things don't go the way we need them to, stopping to step into gratitude can be very hard!

We can apply this simple tool when someone triggers us. We can step out of the drama triangle and into a space that shifts the entire conversation or relationship.
The energy that accompanies a series of bad events is seductive. We can indulge ourselves by playing with those bad feelings and stay stuck in a low frequency which just attracts more of the same.

Raising our awareness that we have the ability to step out of that stream of low frequency energy is very empowering! And actually doing so is even more empowering. Taking responsibility for the bad flow of energy you're in and choosing to shift out of that will change the course of events.

What is the difference between smiling and using a positive attitude, minimizing the low frequency energy, and using a practice of gratitude with the result that it transforms that energy?

Authenticity isn't fake! So don't fake your way through a chain of bad events. Instead, authentically, genuinely step into gratitude to align with your truth about the good, the bad, and all the possibilities in between.  It looks like this: “I have stepped into a current of low frequency energy where everything is going wrong. This is making me feel angry, frustrated, helpless, and exhausted. Thankfully, I don't have to stay in this low frequency. I can look for what is working… what can go right… what could be worse… and lift myself into a high frequency using gratitude.”

You can always find the light in every situation if you look hard enough for it. The key is to check in. Find it. Embrace it. Let go of the victim centered bad mood. Let go of needing people to feel sorry for you or rescue you. Step into your own power to change and shift your energy, and it will make your day much better.
