Within The Mist

As the winter nights got longer, people always huddled next to the fireplace and entertained one another with ghost stories during the yuletide season.  Over time, that tradition disappeared here in the United States and the ghosts were confined to October.  That would change with the first publishing of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol in 1843 about a miserable man who is visited by three ghosts on the night before Christmas.

Phantasmagoria, the acclaimed theater troupe, succeeds in keeping the tradition of yuletide ghost stories alive with yearly presentations of some of the greatest wintery and Christmas ghost stories written through the centuries each year.

Join Gary and he takes a walk Within The Mist with Phantasmagoria's Byron as they talk about the importance of ghost stories during the long winter months.  We will also learn more about how the idea of a dark circus has evolved over the past twelve years to combine storytelling, fire performance, dance, puppetry, and stage combat for the entertainment of the entire family.

Plus, Byron shares some stories of his own household ghost and how it feels to act as caretaker to her home.

Within Ohio, Michigan and Connecticut, there are sightings of strange creatures that were once human but have devolved into something more monstrous. People have seen them during the late hours within the woods, chewing on the bones of their prey and have been chased, causing them to flee for their very lives.

These beings are the result of experiments of the worst kind.  If the stories are true, then it was the United States own government which sponsored the research and procedures turning them from human to inhuman. These clandestine experiments were meant to study mental evolution but resulted in creating monsters.

The subjects were infants taken from mental asylums and orphanages across the nation.

Join Gary and GoldieAnn as they take another Walk Within The Mist to determine if the legends are true and if we are surrounded by the Melon Heads.

Salem has a long history with witches and witchcraft as the site of the infamous trials of the late 1600s.  Since those dark times, the town has grown to embrace people of all walks of life and is a popular tourist location, especially during the Halloween season.  In fact, the town can be quite crowded during the holidays.

So, Gary and GoldieAnn thought we would bring a little bit of that Salem magic to you with one of the town's premier street ambassadors, Borah Brewington Snaggletooth XIII.  This cranky, green-skinned witch is a positive, entertaining, and sometimes mischievous witch that roams the streets year-round and especially during October.  Borah can be found spreading magic, engaging with people, and officiating weddings.

Join Gary and GoldieAnn as they take a walk Within the Mist to meet with Brian "BORAH!" Sims to talk about the rich history, but most importantly, the Salem of today.  Perhaps we can even convince them to share some of their poetry so as they say "Hop on your broomstick and let's see where they carry us."

The town of Bedburg, Germany during the 16th century was threatened by an demonic monster that slaughtered its livestock, leaving them mauled in the fields. Even the townsfolk were in danger as women and children were being attacked and killed in terrifying savagery.

Evidence pointed to the fact that the townspeople were being hunted by a raging beast, a werewolf with a taste for flesh that lived amongst them.

Join Gary and GoldieAnn as they peer Within The Mist to discover the most famous trial and execution of a self-confessed cannibal maneater, The Werewolf of Bedburg.

It started on a sunny afternoon in March of 1962 when five Florida teens went on a 7ft Air Force raft to skin-dive.  They planned to explore the semi-submerged shipwreck, the USS Massachusetts, which sits on a sandbar about two miles from shore in the Gulf of Mexico.

Tragically, four teenaged skindivers: Bradford Rice, 14, Warren Felley, 16, Eric Ruyle, 16, and Larry Stuart Bill, 17 would be lost before the day was over and remain missing today. Only one boy returned. The survivor, Brian McCleary, aged 16 at the time told a story of how four of his friends died that day.  It is a story as bizarre as it is disturbing.

Join Gary and GoldieAnn as they take a journey Within The Mist and tell of the Pensacola Sea Monster.

Hawaiian oral history has it that many centuries ago, a mischievous group of small people lives hidden in the forests and valleys of the islands even before the first settlers arrived from Polynesia. These people, who roamed the deep forests at night, are said to be only two feet tall, though some were as tiny as six inches small enough to fit in the palm of a hand. They enjoyed dancing, singing and archery, and their favorite foods were bananas and fish.

According to local lore, they are smart, extremely strong, and excellent craftsmen. They are rarely seen by human eyes, and they are credited with mighty feats of engineering and overnight construction.  Even today, there are reports of sightings within the forests of Hawaii.

Listen with Gary & GoldieAnn as they are joined by our daughter, Ariel, who is currently living in Hawaii as they discover the legends of the Menehune.

Within the forests outside of Rhinelander, Wisconsin resides a fearsome beast described as having "the head of a frog, the grinning face of a giant elephant, thick short legs set off by huge claws, the back of a dinosaur, and a long tail with spears at the end".

In 1896, Eugene "Gene" Shepherd would search and capture one to display at the Oneida County Fair to the amazement of 1000s of spectators.  This would lead to a love affair between the town of Rhinelander and the creature.
