In this episode, the listeners are taken on a journey into the relationship between Jeff and Dani through their text messages. There were highs and lows as the terrain wasn’t easy to navigate. These texts don't reflect the beginnings of a relationship where both parties want to present their best selves. On the contrary, words like “control, crave and scared” are used within weeks of their relationship. The red flags were there from the beginning.

Our goal through Private Eyes is to have the public hear audio from cases to explore investigations. In this episode, you will hear audio from CJ’s interview with Cass County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Roy Barker. This interview was conducted two days after Dani Smith was shot. As you know from prior episodes, CJ was along for the ATV ride and stayed by Jeff’s wrecked ATV when it flew off the trailer. The investigators will point out differences in CJ’s interview versus details Jeff gave in his interview technique…or lack thereof. Basic investigations should match the statements and the 911 call. When officers arrive at the scene, the area should be cornered off, the people at the scene should be secured, and evidence should be collected. What would the evidence be in a called-in shooting? A bullet, a hole, and blood spatter. How do you document blood spatter? Pictures from every angle, hundreds of pictures. Should GSR be tested on the people at the scene? Once GSR is taken, it should be sent to the lab for results to avoid any questions. Dani's hands were swabbed for GSR, the results? Real-time investigations cause delays with episodes. The Dani Smith case investigation has uncovered information that no one saw coming. We are deep diving at the state, federal, and local levels to see what happened to Dani Smith. Not only asking for higher authorities to step in and show the investigation or lack of investigation but to uncover any shenanigans with Dani Smith's case and others. Already the case has brought scared victims from the past forward, no longer scared. To find out there are so many and the same names that keep showing up repeatedly in cases. Is Protect and Serve only for the few and not the females in that community?

A female District Attorney, Courtney Shelton, will hopefully take the lead and clean up the overwhelming bad behavior. Reports of rape, domestic violence, drunk driving, stalking, etc. If Dani Smith's investigation had been handled properly, none of this would have come to light. How many more females have to suffer and be afraid of the people who have taken an oath "To Protect and Serve".

If not, the millions of people listening and watching the events will shine a light on this small town of Hughes Springs. How many victims will it take before the right thing is done? Stay tuned.

Jeff was interviewed by Detective Cason just hours after Dani Smith was shot. Her interview was relatively short. Listen to what she asked and how Jeff answered. She didn’t ask Jeff about his background, his temperament, or even if he’s been involved in past criminal situations. Everything focused on Dani’s behaviors and Dani shooting herself. But did she?

In this week’s episode, the long-awaited 911 call will be played. If you have an affinity for statement analysis, this is certainly an episode you will want to listen to repeatedly. As we recorded this episode, we caught something different every time we listened. Jeff places his needs before Dani’s. He tries to take control immediately by saying he needs a different county to respond. He distances himself from Dani by referring to her as “the girl”. He refused to give CPR because he knew she was dead. Except she wasn’t. Listen to the dispatcher as she seems to doubt that Jeff is doing as she tells him to. We will break down the 911 call line by line, taking you through our private eyes.

In this week’s episode, we introduce you to the second location of significance, the evening Dani died, which we call “The ATV site." Thirty minutes after Jeff called 911 about Dani, the Cass County Sheriff’s Dept responded to a 911 call from a witness who reported hearing an accident. You will hear the audio between Cass County Sheriff’s Deputy James Rachel and Jeff’s good friend CJ, who was also riding ATVs with Jeff and Dani. After they were finished riding, Jeff called CJ and asked him to follow him back into town. CJ reports that Jeff was driving erratically and lost his ATV off the trailer. Two days later, CJ is interviewed by Cass County Chief Deputy Roy Barker. You will also hear this audio. Listen closely to similarities and differences in his recollection of the events of the evening Dani died.

In the next episode, you will hear from one of my Patreon members, Haley Ward, who became a Private Investigator, to get answers about the suspicious death of her 20-year-old cousin, Dani Jo Smith of Longview, TX.

Dani was a confident and vivacious young woman who went for an ATV ride on the night of July 18, 2014, with her on-again/off-again boyfriend, Jeff Wellborn. Unfortunately, Dani never made it home. Dani died in the hospital that night from a gunshot wound to her head, which was ruled a suicide. Many questions surrounded her death. Why were there three possible crime scenes? Why were none of the other ATV riders interviewed? How could she have shot herself while reclined in a car seat with a seatbelt on? Why would a former Marine who served two tours in Iraq confuse the sound of a gunshot, thinking it was a firecracker? In the next several episodes, Sheila and Katherine will investigate that fateful night, taking you through their private eyes.
