March 15, 2022Tri This: S2E9 - Managing Weight Loss in Female AthletesWhen athletes compete in a sport that has weight classes it can be very tricky to lose weight while also maintaining and striving to improve performance. It's common for this to cause many issues, particularly with female athletes, as advice that is commonly given does not take into account hormones and female physiology. Kirstin discusses a case study where weight loss combined with the stresses of life, training and pressures from her coaches and team turned into severe issues with the athlete's performance and overall health. Hopefully this episode provides some answers for athletes who have experienced an issue like this in the past and also promotes change and awareness around performance and health for female athletes.Host: Dr. Kirstin LauritzenRecorded: March 14, 2022For more information, links and resources and hundreds more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. March 14, 2022Athlete Profile: Camille Herron, UltrarunnerOklahoma native Camille Herron spends her life breaking records in Ultra-distance running so it may not have come as a surprise to her followers when she recently broke her own women’s world record in the Jackpot 100/US Championship in Las Vegas. That she won in 12 hours, 41 minutes and 11 seconds, averaging around 7:37 minutes per mile was impressive enough but this was only the second time a woman had won (Ann Trason was the first to do it, winning the 1989 US 24Hr Championship) but Camille completed in 2022 almost a minute and a half faster than her previous record in 2017. Camille is the first and only athlete to win all three of the International Association of Ultrarunners' 50K, 100K, and 24 Hour World Championships. She says winning the 2017 Comrades Marathon was the highlight of her career of which she is most proud. She is the first and only woman to run under 13 hours for 100 miles, exceed 150 km for 12-Hours, and to reach 270km for 24Hrs. And there are a string of other records to her name. From surviving the 1999 Oklahoma tornado when her family lost their home to overcoming multiple injuries, her cheerful and positive outlook has carried her through. We can expect many more records as she fine tunes her preparation and lifestyle in pursuit of her goals laying down the challenge for future generations of women in the sport.Host: Chris StaffordRecorded: March 7, 2022For more information, links and resources and hundreds more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. March 12, 2022Amazons: Elise Wortley - Following in the Footsteps of Female ExploersElise Wortley is an Englishwoman on a mission; not as a modern day explorer but as an authentic amazon from centuries past. Elise is planning her third journey following in the footsteps of famous women who conquered mountains and oceans from Scotland to the Himlayas. And what makes her journeys different is that she is dressed and equipped in authentic clothing of that period which so far has been the early 1900s. This includes heavy long woolen coats, leather shoes and a wooden backpack; none of which makes for easy going across difficult terrain and in challenging weather conditions. And there’s also altitude sickness to cope with too. But none of these adversities have deterred Elise who was first inspired by reading about Alexandra David-Neel who climbed the Himalayas and Nan Shepherd who explored The Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland. Her next adventure begins in April 2022 when she travels to Iran to retrace the exploits of Freya Stark on her incredible journey to the Valleys of the Assassins. While all these women made history in their time, Elise is also making history of her own inspired by her sheroes.Host: Chris StaffordRecorded: March 3, 2022For more information, links and resources and hundreds more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. March 08, 2022Tri This: S2E8 - The Important Role of MitochondriaHave you ever had an injury, ache or pain, or really low energy that couldn't be explained or fixed? One mistake that athletes and sports medicine practitioners make is they don't look deeper into why that athlete is experiencing those chronic symptoms. One very critical factor that leads to either chronic pain, inflammation and injuries or optimal performance, increased resistance to fatigue and the ability to maintain speed and keep your energy up even at the end of the race has to do with something called the mitochondria. In this episode, we cover what your mitochondria are, how you can support them, and a shift in perspective on how you see sport, injuries, inflammation and nutrition.Host: Dr. Kirstin LauritzenRecorded: March 7, 2022For more information, links and resources and hundreds more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. March 05, 2022Transcending Sport: Jenny Nguyen - Changing the ChannelPortland native Jenny Nguyen is counting down the days to opening the nation’s first women’s sports bar, and will watch her concept of providing a safe social space to watch sport become a reality. For the former basketball player turned chef, the idea of a sports bar for women began as a joke with her girlfriend Liz in 2018, but as the world changed with the impact of a pandemic so Jenny changed her thinking. That this idea could actually be a viable business with restaurant and bar would be a brilliant idea whichever way you looked at it. As a trained chef, the notion of having her own restaurant was a natural career move. And combined with her love of sport and passion for supporting women, Jenny is making it happen. The Sports Bra will open its doors on North East Broadway in early April 2022 and there is sure to be a demand for their signature cocktail—Title IX.Host: Chris StaffordRecorded: March 2, 2022For more information, links and resources and hundreds more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com.
