Courtenay Tuxhorn, 44, is an amateur 3-day event rider originally from Harwood, Maryland. She grew up working and riding on a family friend’s thoroughbred farm, galloping racehorses and dabbling in the hunters and jumpers. Her life revolved around the barn until she graduated college, when the reality of an entry-level job in a big city lured her out of the saddle and in search of new sports. She took up cycling and triathlon and raced professionally with some of the best women in the world. Some of her career highlights include overall female wins at the 2013 American Discovery Trail Marathon in Colorado, the 2009 Danskin Seattle Triathlon, and the 2010 Maryland Half Marathon; representing the U.S. at ITU Duathlon World Championships in 2011; and standing on numerous podiums at bike races across California. After over a dozen years of racing, Courtenay decided it was time to get back to horses. She took stock of the modern sport horse landscape to see where her favorite breed -- the thoroughbred -- excels, and decided to pursue eventing. In early 2017, she found a racehorse ready for his second career at Laurel Park Racetrack in Maryland, and the two of them began learning the sport together. Courtenay and BA Messenger, aka "Bam", completed their first FEI event in 2021, the CCI 2*-Long at the Tryon International. We hear how Courtney came to circle back to her first passion and whaat’s next for her and Bam.

This week’s news includes a round up of World Cup skiing, top stories in international football, tennis from the Australian Open, plus netball, motor racing and the Beijing Olympic Games. We begin though with rugby since the USA Women's Sevens won gold in Malaga. Our own Leo's Den podcasters Naya Tapper Oly and Ilona Maher celebrate standout performances: Naya becomes the top try scorer in US rugby and Lo won the Player of the Final Award. Finishing their last tournament in Dubai in seventh place, the USA women are showing constant evolution on the world stage, now ranked fourth overall with two events to go. Undefeated in every game contested, defeating rivals Canada, Poland, Great Britain, France and Russia for their first gold medal since the Glendale Sevens in 2019. This was the third tournament in the 2021-22 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series. Next stop Seville for the next tournament this coming weekend.

Pro Mountain Biker, Nikki Peterson is Kirstin’s guest this week. Nikki began mountain biking just after college, although she didn't start her journey as a professional until she was 28. She takes us through how she developed her passion for the sport, what her training looks like and a typical day’s routine. We also learn how important nutrition is for Nikki as a Dietician and how selective she is in choosing her food combinations. We also hear how she juggles four jobs with managing her pro athlete career. This episode is packed with advice not just for bikers but for active women across the sport’s spectrum.

We begin this week with World Cup Bobsled and Monobob. American Elana Meyers Taylor secured both titles last weekend in St. Moritz and not surprisingly has secured her fourth Olympic ticket. Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami won the Downhill in Zauchensee, Austria last weekend and then Italy’s Italian Federica Brignone won the Super-G. Mikaela Shiffrin (USA), Petra Vlhova (SLO) and Sofia Goggia (ITA) currently top the overall World Cup standings as the women head to Cortina d’Ampezzo for another Downhill and Super G this weekend. Nancy has a round up from the Australian Open Tennis and there’s news from football, netball and sports politics plus the Beijing Olympics.

Lori Okimura has spent her professional career in a variety of areas from volleyball coach to sport’s governance. She has been a volunteer, sponsor, club director, facility manager and event organizer with extensive experience in sales, marketing and promotions of various major international sports organizations and events, primarily in Olympic and Paralympic sports. In 2019, she was appointed an Executive Board Member to the Board of Directors of Angel City Sports, an organization based in Los Angeles, California focused on providing opportunities through sport to adults, children and veterans with physical differences and impairments. Lori serves in the leadership of World ParaVolley, the international federation for sitting and beach para-volley. She has been a member of the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) and since 2004 has been a technical delegate for the FIVB World Tour. Lori was appointed by World ParaVolley as an international technical official for sitting volleyball for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games and is certified as a technical delegate for sitting and beach para-volley events.

 Having been subjected herself to discrimination and harassment in sport including ageism, gender equity and racial injustice, Lori is passionate about helping others.  Her focus now is prioritizing athlete safety though her work with Safe Sport sharing her experiences in adaptive sport, and helping young people find their path in sports.

We kick off this week with the Olympic Games just three weeks away and selection trials happening around the world. American Elana Meyers Taylor stamps her place in Monobob, which will be making its debut in Beijing. She currently leads in women’s monobob points after winning this past weekend’s World Cup race in Winterberg, Germany. Her teammate, Kaillie Humphries, narrowly missed the medals finishing in fourth place but teamed with Sylvia Hoffman to claim the bronze medal in the two-woman bobsled World Cup race. Elana Meyers Taylor and Kaysha Love had the fastest run in the second heat and finished just behind their teammates in fourth. In World Cup skiing there was an outstanding victory for Sweden’s Sara Hector in Kranjska Gora Giant Slalom to put her on top of that discipline rankings, Meanwhile Slovakian Petra Vlhova continues he winning streak by adding the Kranjski Gora slalom to her CV but was beaten by her arch rival Mikaela Shiffrin in Schladming 15 hundreths of a second. There is also news from tennis, cycling, baseball, basketball and speedskating with a story of sportsmanship by American Brittany Bowe making our headline story.

On the first episode of Season 2 of Tri This, Dr Kirstin Lauritzen is joined by pro triathlete Alysha Krall. Alysha shares how she got into triathlon and her favorite aspects of the sport. We also hear about her experience with eating disorders throughout her career as an athlete in college and her journey to healing through plant based eating and triathlon. We know that eating disorders are common in athletes, particularly higher in female athletes, and Alysha's story is both full of realistic expectations, but also hope in healing and overcoming the challenges that come with navigating the world of nutrition and sport.

Chris & Nancy kick off the first show of the year with a new look and name for the weekly news podcast that we like to call the News Desk since that’s what we are all about heading into Season 4. And we begin with a round up of the winter sports that have been headlining: World Cup two-women bobsled heralded the holidays with a win for the American duo of Elana Meyers Taylor and Lake Kwaza. In alpine skiing the Slovakian slalomist Petra Vlhova won the last two slalom races in Lienz and Zagreb and finished second in the Lienz GS giving her a lead of 140 points in the slalom rankings ahead of American Mikaela Shiffrin who had to miss Lienz when she tested positive to Covid-19. Mikaela was back racing in Zagreb this week finishing runner-up to Petra. We look ahead to the Australian Open Tennis, which runs January 17-30 and share our expectations of the first grand slam of the year. Other stories: Naomi Osaka makes her return; Sifan Hassan reflects on her Olympic campaign; Women's Olympic skateboarders win fair play award; British Army officer Preet Chandi is the first woman of color to solo ski to the South Pole and Nancy looks ahead to a bumper year of major championship events in women’s sport in 2022.

As 2021 comes to a close we look back at what has been an extraordinary year for women in sport. We have each chosen a handful of remarkable performances from a variety of sports, which will always be stand-out achievements, personal bests for the athletes and go down in the history of their sport. There are so many adjectives to describe what women have accomplished this year as the standards continue to improve, and records are continually broken. There is nothing to compare with the guts and determination of these dedicated athletes whose goals may have been achieved this year but new ones will be set for the future. It has been and continues to be a thrill to watch women continue to soar to greater heights in their sports and show what is possible. And just when we think that a record that cannot be broken we see another generation break down barriers, train even harder, take on tougher competition and excel in themselves while showing the world the potential for women in any sport, anywhere in the world.
