Women Unscripted

As 2021 comes to a close we look back at what has been an extraordinary year for women in sport. We have each chosen a handful of remarkable performances from a variety of sports, which will always be stand-out achievements, personal bests for the athletes and go down in the history of their sport. There are so many adjectives to describe what women have accomplished this year as the standards continue to improve, and records are continually broken. There is nothing to compare with the guts and determination of these dedicated athletes whose goals may have been achieved this year but new ones will be set for the future. It has been and continues to be a thrill to watch women continue to soar to greater heights in their sports and show what is possible. And just when we think that a record that cannot be broken we see another generation break down barriers, train even harder, take on tougher competition and excel in themselves while showing the world the potential for women in any sport, anywhere in the world.

Abby’s guest on the season finale of The Sailing Show is Spanish sailor, Demila Tassin who has recently returned from competing in the Mini Transat Race for the first time. The Mini Transat is a race Djemila had been dreaming of for the past five years and we hear about her journey to the start line, the challenges, the highs and lows and what she has learnt from this unique experience.

The Mini Transat is a 4,050 nautical mile race from Les Sables d’Olonne in France to Saint-François in Guadeloupe, with a stopover in Santa Cruz de La Palma. This race has acquired the reputation of a true test of ocean racing and for good reason, it’s a single handed, without outside assistance or weather routing by satellite in a 6.5m boat.

On the season finale of Season 1 Kirstin has a special guest. Makenna Myler is a mother and pro athlete in both track and long distance running. We don't just cover her career in running, though; you will also hear applicable tips and get a peek inside the journey of a pro athlete, that honestly sounds very similar to everyone's journey in sport.  Makenna became famous for competing in the 2020 United States Olympic Trials, where she placed 14th, approximately seven months after giving birth to her daughter. She had previously garnered notoriety for running one mile in 5 minutes 25 seconds approximately 1 week prior to giving birth.  We had so much fun with this conversation and we hope that you enjoy it as much as we did.  Kirstin will be back in January 2022 with season 2 of Tri This, which will have a different look and feel so be sure to subscribe on your podcast app so you don't miss an episode.

This week’s guest on the season finale is not only a USA rugby legend but a legend around the world. She has made three appearances in the Rugby World Cup and was selected as the top player in the world in her position in 2002 and 2006. In 2010, she was named the U.S. Rugby Player of the Decade. In November 2017, she was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame. Currently she has her own clothing line called the PSK collective, which Naya is an ambassador for and is a commentator on the world rugby sevens series so you've probably heard her voice before. She has paved the way for women in rugby and is constantly taking on new projects, most recently MMA. Phaindra shares her passions with us and what's on her bucket list, some of which may surprise you...or not... if you know how invincible this woman is.

The Italian bullet that is Sofia Goggia stole the show at Lake Louise this past weekend with a hat-trick in the Super Gs and Downhill with American Breezy Johnson being her main threat in two races and Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami in the second Super G. The White Circus is now in St Moritz for two Super G races on Dec 11/12. Also last weekend, Kaillie Humphries won first Bobsled World Cup race as an American citizen, the USA Rugby 7s team finished 5th in the rankings after the Dubai 7s tournament the past two weekends with Leo’s Den co-hosts Naya Tapper and Ilona Maher putting on stellar performance in attack and defense. English football club Chelsea won the FA Cup Final, and the NWSL transfer season has seen some big moves already. In tennis, Britain’s Johanna Konta announces her retirement, Bianca Andreescu withdraws from the Australian Open. And in awards news Emma Raducanu, Lauren James Recognized are celebrated at the BT Sports Action Woman Awards, Red Roses Coach Simon Middleton becomes first coach of a women's team to be named World Rugby Coach of the Year, and Elaine Thompson-Herah is named Female Athlete of the Year.

Kirstin reviews the Indian Wells Ironman 70.3 in La Quinta California that she competed in this past weekend. It was a race with some ups and downs as many of them are. Kirstin had some PR’s, and nailed hydration and fueling. However, she still battled the heat out on the run and experienced some frustration on the run as this very hot race season comes to an end. We also cover the signs and symptoms of the start of thermoregulation issues, to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If you know the signs and symptoms as an athlete you can catch them before they turn into a more serious issue, and you may be able to help out a fellow athlete as well. We also talk about the long term consequences of heat injuries and how long it can take to overcome them.

Vermont resident Peggy Shinn reports on her local sporting event, the Killington Skiing World Cup where favorite Mikaela Shiffrin won the Slalom ahead of her fiercest opponent Slovakian Petra Vlhova.
