December 28, 2020The CWSA Podcast: S1E9 - Lisa Fernandez, 1993 WinnerThis week’s guest is 1993 winner and softball player Lisa Fernandez who credits the support and opportunity that her Cuban father and Puerto Rican mother gave her in sport from an early age. Her father encouraging her to develop her physical strength and her mother guiding her to be an independent and strong woman. Both attributes might be perceived as head of their time culturally both in terms of heritage and gender. Lisa talks about being a coach during a pandemic where they are counting on their team to independently stay fit and be ready to compete in the spring of 2021. She laments that with few role models on television at the time she had no reference of what was possible. Then a coach showed her a new game - fast pitch softball, and the rest is history. Lisa compares the three Olympic Games she competed in which have become benchmarks for women in the sport. The first time softball was included in the Olympic Games was 1996 in Atlanta but previous players deserve recognition despite being denied Olympic glory. Lisa’s second time was an ugly win in 2000 in Sydney where USA’s biggest rival, Australia, was their host. In 2004 the International Olympic Committee (IOC) changed the game in an attempt to curtail the USA domination in doing so presented a huge challenge, which was to lure Lisa out of retirement. Lisa shares what it takes to be an elite athlete, but above all credits everyone who puts themselves in a position to test themselves - be it on world stage or a local team. Now a wife and mother of two sons this Title IX baby has come along way and given so much to the world of sports, all the while staying at UCLA for her 23rd year, now as a coach.Host: Chris Voelz, CWSA Executive DirectorPodcast length: 32 mins.A co-production with the CWSA.For more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. December 21, 2020Sound Bites: S2E13 - Why Vitamin C is Everyone's FriendOn this final episode of 2020 Functional Medicine Practitioner, Dr Kirstin Lauritzen, covers another nutrient highlight: Vitamin C. This topic is a hefty one as Vitamin C is one of the most common supplemented vitamins of them all. You’ve likely heard of its benefit on the immune system, and it’s a powerful antioxidant. Dr K discusses the ins and outs of Vitamin C for our health, but there’s also a possible downside for athletes when it comes to supplemental Vitamin C. Antioxidants don’t always do what we hope when it comes to being anti-inflammatories and several studies suggest that Vitamin C, E, A and other antioxidants can actually impair your recovery and adaptation to exercise instead.Duration: 23 minsFor more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. December 16, 2020WiSP Sports Desk: S2E48 - Sport's Annus HorribilisChris and Nancy look back on 2020 in this review of women’s sport in a year like no other in our lifetime. The disruption to sport caused by a global pandemic will make the year memorable for all the wrong reasons. Before the winter was out the calendar was upended and cancellations scribbled across dates around the globe from grassroots to Olympic Games. Uncertainty was wrapped in confusion and chaos walked the hallways of sport’s governance. So many questions and so few answers left athletes stranded and perplexed as gyms closed and training routines were forced to detour. The ripple effect has been far reaching across venues, organizers, sponsors and industries that supply the sports world far and wide. Yet as it became clear that there was some hope and sport would find a way to prevail, albeit singing a different tune as empty stadiums echoed a hollow sound bereft of crowds. We were concerned that there would be no competition to report on some ten months ago and yet as the year unfolded we found plenty of stories to share in women’s sport. And some would say that while the same issues facing women continue to be a constant undertone there was a glimmer of light beyond the dark clouds, and even some good news emerging from this annus horribilis.36 minsHosts: Chris Stafford & Nancy GillenFor more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. December 15, 2020Mum's the Word: S1E19 - Ski Racing's Kaylin Richardson Adapts to MotherhoodOn this week’s episode our guest is Kaylin Richardson, a two-time Olympian in Alpine Skiing, four-time National Alpine Champion, and a member of the U.S. Ski Team fo ten years. Kaylin was raised in Minnesota and followed her brothers into ski racing. After she retired from professional racing in 2010 she moved to Utah to focus on free-skiing and backcountry touring when she discovered the magic of the backcountry and went on to win the Free-skiing World Tour’s North American Championship in Snowbird in 2012. After this win she accrued a few sponsors and was invited to take part in a Warren Miller film. She recently wrapped her eighth Warren Miller shoot and is looking forward to the upcoming winter. Retiring from ski racing at the early age of 25 surprised people in the sport but Kaylin was satisfied with what she had achieved in alpine skiing and wanted to explore other options on skis. The regimented structure of training with the Olympic team was something she felt ready to move on from and the agility and speed skills she learnt during her alpine skiing career are useful for big mountain skiing. At that time, children were not in the plans and it was interesting to hear her perspective of motherhood in her sport as a new mother. Kaylin was able to stay very active during her pregnancy and had an easy time of it — something all expectant mothers hope for. We also hear Kaylin’s birth story so stay tuned to the end for that. And while you’re here, please leave a review of the podcast and let us know what you thought of this episode.
