December 01, 2020Mum's the Word: S1E17 - Molly Dickins, Co-founder of &Mother Challenging Rampant Bias and InequalityWe welcome Molly Dickens from &Mother as our guest this week. Molly is a PhD stress physiologist, maternal health advocate, co-founder of &Mother, a non-profit organization dedicated to breaking down some of the barriers that keep women from ‘having it all’. Molly co-founded this organization with Alysia Montano, who you might know as one of the leading voices working for equal representation in sport for women and for mothers. Alysia started the #dreammaternity movement and her oped in the NY Times on her experience as a pregnant athlete dealing with a crumbling sponsorship deal with shoe wear giant, Nike, glaringly exposed the rampant bias and inequality toward women in sport.&Mother envisions a world where women have the choice to pursue both career and motherhood without penalty or barriers. They want to see a workplace where mothers are leaders and sought after as employees, where motherhood is not a secret and women can openly express their needs without retribution. A society that is healthier and more productive because it values mothers and reflects the needs of modern families. We discuss breaking down the stereotype of “mother” and building awareness about the barriers currently faced by mothers in the workforce in all industries. The motherhood penalty is explained in some detail, &Mother is working to create safe spaces for women in sport, including lactation stations at major sporting events. This is our #GivingTuesday episode and we are delighted to be highlighting this non-profit as one of the many option for the Mum’s the Word followers.Hosts: Sarah Newberry Moore & Pam Relph JonesPodcast length: 66 minsMusic: Volver by Paula van HissenhovenFor more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. November 30, 2020The CWSA Podcast: S1E7 - Ann Meyers, 1978 WinnerThe 1978 CWSA Honda Cup Winner, Ann Meyers, and her ten brothers and sisters received parental support and encouragement in their sport growing up, and equally so, which was not always the case in the 60’s. Since no female sports were available on TV, Ann’s dreams were carved from reading a book on Babe Didrikson Zaharias, an American athlete who excelled in golf, basketball, baseball and track and field. She later watched Wilma Rudolf and others in the Olympic Games and set her sights on becoming an Olympian. The values her parents taught her such as discipline, accountability and competition were lessons she also learned and practiced in the sports she played in high school and college. Her basketball prowess opened doors to the rest of her life. First a college scholarship at UCLA where she was a four-time All American, led the Bruins to a national championship and selected the 1978 Broderick Cup winner (later known as the Honda Cup). Ann played internationally and professionally and was only female to try out with an NBA team. She speaks to her career both in broadcasting and serving as general manager for a WNBA team. Ann believes women should not stay silent and is proud of the current messaging of the WNBA players. She is grateful for those who came before her and takes issue with the fact that their stories prior to NCAA competition have largely been ignored—she is a veritable history book as she reminds us of the early greats. Title IX meant the world to Ann and means so much to girls today. She handled multiple of responsibilities because she knew that education was important and she had to get a degree. Ann believes recognition, then and now, is important, be it in the media or with the Honda Cup.Host: Chris Voelz, CWSA Executive DirectorPodcast length: 39 mins.A co-production with the CWSA.For more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. November 25, 2020WiSP Sports Desk: S2E45 - Kaillie Humphries is Back on TrackOn our weekly news magazine show Chris Stafford is joined by Nancy Gillen from Inside the Games who has the top stories from around the world of women’s sport. Earlier this week, Chris spoke to US Bobsled's three-time Olympian - the only woman to win back to back gold medals and a three-time World Champion, Kaillie Humphries who had just completed the US National Trials and made the squad for the 2022 Olympic Games. She is now in the process of making the cut to compete at next year's World Championships and the 2022 Olympics in Beijing. If you’ve been following the sport, you will know that prior to the 2018-19 season, Kaillie bravely came forward about the harassment she faced from the governing body of professional Canadian bobsledding. She filed a lawsuit to be released from Canada’s national team in September, 2019 and joined Team USA. Like many female athletes in recent years, Kaillie risked her career to stand up publicly against a sports’ governing body. As one of Canada’s most decorated athletes of all time, she made the difficult personal and professional choice to leave her home country.Top international news this week: Firsts in American sportKendall Coyne Schofield joins Blackhawks as organization's first-ever female development coachFormer Cal women’s soccer players accuse coach of bullying, intimidationShiffrin Fifth in Levi Slalom; Moltzan and Lapanja Score PointsMaternity rights in footballMaternity rights in triathlonFIFA Best AwardsFIS Alpine Ski World Cup and Shiffrin comebackFemale Athlete of the YearShayna Jack Accepts Verdict2021 Rugby World Cup DrawDuration: 40 minsFor more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. November 24, 2020Mum's the Word: S1E16 - Diver Laura Wilkinson, Mother of Four Bids For Fourth Olympic GamesOlympic gold medalist Laura Wilkinson, ‘The Comeback Queen’, join Pam and Sarah this week to share her inspirational story. Laura competed for the USA at the Sydney, Athens and Beijing Olympic Games, retiring at age 30 to start a family. When the world had watched the best of pro diving, Laura announced her comeback, making a bid for the 2020 (now 2021) Olympics in Tokyo. Since Beijing, Laura has expanded her family, adding four children into the Wilkinson tribe; two of whom were adopted. Laura grew up inspired to one day go to the Olympics. She recalls watching the famous gold medal win for Mary Lou Retton at the 1984 Olympics and quickly fell in love with the sport of gymnastics. By the time she was 13, Laura realized that this sport was not going to be the one that took her to the Olympic Games and decided to find another sport. This is when she discovered diving.A rising star in the sport within two years she had won senior nationals. Even after decades in the sport she still gets nervous jumping in the pool the regular way but somehow diving in headfirst does not rattle her. Laura’s career highlight was her epic rise to Olympic glory, winning gold in the 10 meter board at the Sydney Olympics, having broken her foot that season and getting her cast off less than three weeks prior to the Olympic trials. The mental training and visualization work was her secret weapon, as she was forced to build up the mental resiliency she would need to climb from eighth in the final to first. So that is exactly what Laura did…and it worked. We hear about her adoption of two children, her two pregnancies, the ups and downs through her second pregnancy and how her perspective has changed now competing as an athlete with a large, young family. The major takeaways from the interview:- sport is 90% mental, but no one trains 90% on their mental ability;we are not superwoman, even though we wish we were;let your kids hold you accountable.Laura also hosts her own podcast—The Pursuit of Gold—where she hosts variety of guests from Olympic medallists to coaches and sports journalists. If you enjoyed this episode, you will love Laura’s podcast.Hosts: Sarah Newberry Moore & Pam Relph JonesPodcast length: 54 minsMusic: Paredes Invisibles by Paula van HissenhovenSubscribe to WiSP Sports or WiSP Sports Mum's the Word on your podcast app.For more information, links and resources plus conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com.
