In our continuing series of Equestrian Legends our guest this week is Dawn Palethorpe-Wofford is a British show jumper, Pony Club executive and author. She represented Great Britain on several winning Nations Cup teams, was selected for the 1956 Stockholm Olympics where she met here husband Warren Wofford and the 1960 Rome Olympics. She won the silver medal at the 1960 Ladies European Championship, the Aachen Puissance and the Queen Elizabeth Cup in 1955 and ’56 as well as numerous other national prizes.
This interview was first recorded in 2012. Dawn sadly passed away in 2015 at the age of 79.

On this first episode of Beyond the Balls, Ella Smith and Georgina Mallen chat with Emily Chancellor, 28, rugby player in the national Wallaroos team and NSW Waratahs, which dominated the Super W competition before being cut short by Covid-19. Despite only having started rugby when she was 21, Emily's skills have been recognized in her 2018 Wallaroos Player of the Year award and 2019 NSW Best Forward. In this episode, we hear how her desire to be her best has paid off, the challenges of acting professionally in the unpaid Super W league, and the importance of visibility of women’s rugby for the next generation. We also learn about her spokesperson role, from speaking at the recent Player Care Conference on equality in rugby, to her participating in the two-day female commentating workshop with Sport Australia.

In this episode of Tucker Center Talks Dr. Nicole LaVoi, director of the Tucker Center, talks to Courtney Boucher. Courtney is a current doctoral student in Kinesiology at the U of MN, research assistant in the Tucker Center, a two-time Pam Borton Fellow for Women in Sport Leadership. They discuss the inception, purpose and impact of the Women in College Coaching Report, a longitudinal research project the the Tucker Center does each year in collaboration with WeCOACH. Courtney shares her insight about the process of the report card from a student perspective and the idea behind her M.S. thesis at the U of M ('19) in which she examined hiring practices of athletic directors in NCAA D-I institutions over five years, an offshoot of the Women in College Coaching Report Card.

We continue our series on equestrian legends with all-round horsewoman Betty Ann Gilbert Lester who has succeeded in several equestrian disciplines and regarded with reverence by the equestrian community where she has spent her life in Pennsylvania. Growing up against the background of WWII she soon took to the hunting field with the Rose Tree Hunt Club and Radnor Hunt and then enjoyed competing in both hunters and jumpers.With the early influences of Bill Steinkraus and Bert de Nemethy she found success in the international arena before switching to three day eventing by way of hunter trials. For the past 40 years Betty Ann has concentrated on dressage and credits Germany’s Fritz Stecken and Paul Keck for instilling in her the principles of classical dressage. Betty Ann continues to school dressage horses and also enjoys teaching the next generations.

Abby's guest this month is Clipper Round the World sailor, Clara Carrington.  Clara has been a passionate social sailor through her life and having worked shore side for the Volvo Ocean Race, Clara has now embarked on her own round the world race with Clipper.  Clara is racing with team Punta del Este which is currently lying third overall in the Clipper Round The World Race.  Abby chats to Clara from her home in Uruguay having recently returned following the decision to postpone the remainder of the Clipper Race due to the global impact of COVID -19. They discuss how Clara's experience in human resources helped her with the crew's interaction and what she learned from each leg especially with adapting to new crew members and the importance of empathy in a team situation.
