Matea received this award for her publication, “Are women coached by women more likely to become sport coaches? Head coach gender and female collegiate athletes’ entry into the coaching profession,” appearing in Women’s Journal of Sport and Physical Activity. To honor Matea’s work, her winning article has been given open access for the coming year. March 09, 2020The Horse Show: S5E7 - Equestrian Legend; Endurance Rider Julie SuhrCalifornian Julie Suhr has broken records in Endurance competitions and milestones in horseback adventures around the globe. Since her first ride in the world renown 100 mile Tevis Cup, Julie has completed twenty-two times out of twenty-nine starts [updated to 33 Tevis Cup buckles]. She has collected three Haggin Cups for the Best Conditioned Horse to finish in the Top Ten and she famously garnered three in one year – the Turtle Award for being last to finish; the Hard Luck Award when her horse fell and she endured a full body mud bath and for being the Oldest rider. With a recorded 30,282 miles in competition which represents 63 one hundred mile rides and almost 500 fifty mile rides, Julie last completed the Tevis Cup at the age of 76 although four years later she made her final attempt and came within two miles of another record finish. Her adventure rides have taken her from the remote expanses of Outer Mongolia to the searing heights of the Himalayas. Julie is the author of Ten Feet Tall Still, Julie and Bob Suhr (deceased) have three children, Barbara, Robert, Nancy (deceased) and John as well as six grandchildren. March 03, 2020The Horse Show: S5E6 - Edith Conyers, an Equestrian LegendOn this episode we revisit an interview that was recorded in 2011 as part of a series on Equestrian Legends.Edith Conyers has spent her life devoted to the prosperity and future of horses and the countryside of Kentucky. She has followed hounds with more than 60 packs across America and overseas, some of which as Joint Master of the Iroquois Hounds in Kentucky. She developed a reputation for turning ordinary horses into well-rounded field hunters and has also produced several sport horses including the eventer Potroon that was later ridden to international success by Torrance Watkins. Edith became well-known as the first Executive Director of the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event from 1976-1985.She has devoted a large part of her life to opening riding trails and exploring countryside around the world and advises the First Lady of Kentucky Jane Beshear on Trail Riding issues affecting the Commonwealth. Edith serves as President of the Kentucky Back Country Horseman which she founded, as Secretary & Treasurer of the Central Kentucky Back Country Horseman, a Board member of the Kentucky Horse Council and serves on its Trail Committee, a Board Member of the Masterson Station Park and on the Advisory Committee of the University of Kentucky’s Agricultural Equine Initiative. Nadia shares her perspective on where sport for women is in Australia with many of the same challenges faced elsewhere. She explains why keeping girls and women active is critical and the need to understand the social, cultural, psychological and economic factors.Nadia is passionate about creating inclusive sporting environments for all, in particular girls’ and women. Nadia has worked on a number of projects that strive towards reducing barriers for sport and physical activity participation for girls’ and women, youth and the LGBTQ+ community.
