February 11, 2020The Horse Show: S5E4 - Mary King - Tacking in the Southern OceanThis week’s guest is British Eventer Mary King and the reason we wanted to catch up with Mary is because she recently accomplished something significant in sport that had nothing to do with horses. Mary sailed the Southern Ocean from Cape Town to Sydney on Leg 3 of the Clipper Round the World Ocean Race. Sailing has always been a passion of Mary’s but whilst she was a regular member of the British team, eventing came first and sailing had to wait. Whilst Mary still competes and has young horses she bred to bring along, her bucket list involves non equestrian sports. We hear about what it takes to do this iconic amateur ocean race and how it has inspired her to take on new challenges. One of which involves running and we’ll hear about that goal for 2021.Mary King has represented Great Britain at six Olympics from 1992 to 2012, winning team silver in 2004 and 2012, and team bronze in 2008. At the World Equestrian Games, she won team gold in 1994 and 2010, and team silver in 2006. She has also won four team golds and one team bronze medal at the European Eventing Championships. Mary’s individual honors include European bronze in 1995 and European Silver in 2007. She is a four-time British Open Champion (1990, 1991, 1996 and 2007). She won the CCI four star Badminton Horse Trials in 1992 and 2000, the CCI four star Burghley Horse Trials in 1996, and the CCI four star Rolex Kentucky with her homebred mare King's Temptress in 2011.For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.For more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. February 10, 2020Transcending Sport: S2E3 - AJ Richards says Women Belong in BaseballMy guest is AJ Richards the founder of Women Belong in Baseball which was formed in 2015 to support, encourage, and advocate for girls and women in all aspects of baseball including playing, front office, coaching, scouting, umpiring, managing and journalism/media. AJ Richard grew up an avid baseball fan and dreamed of playing 3B for the Chicago Cubs. In 9th grade an English teacher told her to write an essay about what she wanted to be when she grew up. She wrote about being an MLB manager. The teacher told her she couldn’t do that because she’s a girl eventually she lost interest in baseball. Years later a friend told her about Jackie Mitchell, a 17 year-old woman who struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in succession in an exhibition game. This made AJ realize Women do belong in baseball so she wanted to spread the word about the women trail blazers and the opportunities that are available for girls and women in baseball so she established a social media presence for Women Belong in Baseball. AJ is a self described scholar, activist, and advocate currently finishing her master’s thesis “I Was a Trail Blazer”: The Baseball Playing Experiences of Girls.”For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.For more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. February 04, 2020Amazons: S2E1 - Marci Kornegay's Appalachian TriumphFormer golf coach Marci Kornegay achieved a life goal in 2016 when she hiked the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia, some 2179.1 miles. The early miles she did alone and then she met a group who were to become hiking buddies for months and friends every since. Marci decided at short notice when she would start on the trail giving herself only two weeks to prepare but undeterred by the challenge she faced she left on July 21 and finished on December 4, just less than five months to complete one of the most well trodden trails in North America. The highs and lows of long distance hiking are inevitable and Marci overcame injury and fire to find trail angels that would save her and restore her faith in humanity. Conquering the Appalachian Trail is only one journey with many more on her bucket list.Host: Chris StaffordRecorded: February 9, 2020For more information, links and resources and hundreds more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com.
