January 21, 2020The Horse Show: S5E2 - All-round Horsewoman Pam Cibula; Versatility is KeyOur guest this week can best be described as an all-round Virginia horsewoman. Pam Cibula believes in versatility in training horses to learn from the hunt field and adapt to the show ring or most any other question that’s asked of them. Growing up near Charlottesville in Southern Virginia, Pam rode Welsh ponies and became competitive with her siblings which she carried into her professional career as a working horsewoman. She trains horses to hunt, to develop confidence cross country and use their instincts to be foot perfect, to find their own stride and jump anything. She learned how to ride side-saddle and together with her mare Fine Art they can be found handling tough conditions as one of 10 finalists in the 2019 Virginia Field Hunter Championships or turning on her show craft at the Upperville Colt & Horse Show. Pam explains why she believes horses should be able to do anything, and why she prefers the hunt field to the blue ribbon. For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.For more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. December 31, 2019The Horse Show: S4E14 - Review of the Year with Mollie BaileyOn the final episode of 2019 Chris Stafford is joined by Mollie Bailey, Senior Reporter at The Chronicle of the Horse to take a look back at the highlights of the year in equestrian sport. They discuss the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru where Mollie watched the U.S. Eventing team win the gold medal which crucially secured their place for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and Lynn Symansky, riding in her third Pan Ams, won the silver medal aboard RF Cool Play. The US Dressage Team also took silver as team rookies Sarah Lockman riding First Apple clinched the individual gold with Canada’s Tina Irwin and Laurencio took the silver and Jennifer Baumert also making her championship debut for the US took the bronze. In jumping the intrepid Beezie Madden also claimed a bronze medal to get the US on the podium again. On the other side of the pond the focus was on the European Championships in the three Olympic disciplines. Germany’s Ingrid Klimke claimed back to back individual eventing titles - Britain’s Pippa Funnell is the only other rider to manage that feat. Pippa herself won Burghley again; it’s been 16 years since she last won on her Grand Slam partner Prinmore’s Pride. Runner up to Pippa at Burghley was her friend Piggy French who has won 15 international events this year including Badminton. Germany dominated the European Dressage Championships with the doyen of dressage Isabell Werth adding yet another gold medal to her bounty of championship titles. Elsewhere show jumper Adrienne Sternlicht and Benny’s Legacy shone the spotlight on US riders with back to back wins in World Cup Qualifiers as they focus on the World Cup Final in Las Vegas next April. And on the Global Champions Tour recently married and arguably one of the most recognizable riders on the circuit with her flowing feathers, Dani Waldman née Goldstein won two events on the star studded tour this year in Berlin and Shanghai riding her one-in-a-lifetime partner Lizziemary.
