Team USA Rugby Sevens and WiSP Ambassador Naya Tapper shares her experiences from the Dubai World Rugby Sevens Series where the USA took bronze.  Naya scored two tries during the tournament which was won by New Zealand putting them at the top of the standings with the USA in second.  Naya speaks to us from Cape Town where the next tournament in the HSBC Rugby Sevens Series takes place this weekend.  She explains what she has learned from the competition in Dubai that she and the team need to bring forward to finish on top of the standings with a win in their final tournament of 2019. One thing we can expect this week is for Naya to come running on the field fired up and knowing it helps to be angry!

Our guest this week is Equine Veterinarian Dr. Sallie Hyman, VMD, DACVIM, CVA, MBA who grew up in Northeast Pennsylvania and began riding at the age of four when her parents made the mistake of putting her atop a horse at a local riding stable. She worked her way up through the pony divisions of Zone II riding any and all ponies that were tossed her way. In her later junior years, Sallie competed in the Medal/Maclay equitation divisions. She attended Dickinson College and then the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and received the George M. Palmar prize upon graduation for excellence in equine medicine and surgery. After graduation, Sallie completed a medicine and surgery internship at Reid and Associates in Palm Beach, FL. Following her internship, she pursued a residency in large animal internal medicine at The U of PA New Bolton Center.  And she gained board certification in Internal Medicine in 2004, acupuncture certification in 2006, and her MBA in 2018. Sallie has taught at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Sydney School of Veterinary Medicine. She is currently a senior associate at Total Equine Veterinary Associates in Leesburg, Virginia.

This month we focus on leadership, leaning in and quotas on sport with Karen Skinner, New Zealand Rugby Head of Respect and Inclusion. President of New Zealand Football Johanna Wood, Former Wellington Cricket Board Chair Sally Morrison and Jan Dawson, President of Yachting New Zealand and of course it’s not Fair Play without an update on the toilets from the Basin Reserve. Today’s co-cost is another familiar voice to Fair Play listeners. She’s one of New Zealand leading sports academics looking at issues from media representation to youth physical culture. She’s also researched sports fandom and has recently undertaken research around the recent men’s Rugby World Cup Professor Toni Bruce.
‘There’s been a somewhat naive belief that if we just add women and stir things will change but we know that that doesn’t work. It’s not true. And it happens right across sport, it’s sports media, sports organizations. We know that if taken for granted, assumptions, practices and things are designed by and for men and if gender is not really on the agenda then women that women can enter in often but they tend not to stay long.’ Toni Bruce.

On this week's episode Dr. Jenny Susser and Chris Stafford discuss the fallout in coaching female athletes in the light of the runner Mary Cain suffering abuse. The good news is people are starting to feel safe enough to speak up. The bad news is it is still after the fact. Recently, Mary Cain began to tell her story. It is one of devastation and destruction that could have been dreams fulfilled and a legacy of championships. Her legacy will be more important now, but at great cost.  We have talked offline about the Larry Nassar case, the abuse now coming to light in USA Swimming, the George Morris (equestrian) case, Penn State, and even Menendez. Our interest today is to take a look at the psychology of these cases, including our cultural mores both granting permission for these atrocities to occur and preventing us from being able to course-correct.

Californian Joy Upshaw, 58, is a record breaking long jumper and hurdler who has also spent the past 30 years as a coach. Joan’s running career started at Acalanes High School in Lafayette setting records in hurdles & sprints and then into college with an All-American career at California State University, Joy continued to set records at USA Masters Track & Field Championships and win competitions internationally. Joy holds several American Record times in 80 meter hurdles & 300 meter hurdles and the long jump. During the 2016 USA Indoor Masters Nationals Championship, she set the Women’s 55-59 60m Hurdle World record. In 2018, she lowered her American 80m hurdle record at the Masters Outdoor National Championships.  She also won a highly competitive 200m final at the Outdoor World Championships last summer in Malaga, Spain. Her most recent honor includes being inducted into the Masters Track Hall of Fame and Master of the Year. Joy has many more accolades and her secondary career as a coach has led to being named the Women’s Sprints & Hurdles coach of the 2010 NACAC U23 team, the 2011 Pan American Women’s Team Staff for Jumps & Multi Events in Guadalajara, Mexico, and 2013 Five Nations Match USA Women’s Head Coach in Glasgow, Scotland.  Joy is Head Coach and Founder/Director of Joy’s Jack Rabbits Track Club for kids to competitive Masters Elite athletes.
