November 29, 2019Fair Play: S1E11 - Leadership, Leaning in and Quotas in Sport in New ZealandThis month we focus on leadership, leaning in and quotas on sport with Karen Skinner, New Zealand Rugby Head of Respect and Inclusion. President of New Zealand Football Johanna Wood, Former Wellington Cricket Board Chair Sally Morrison and Jan Dawson, President of Yachting New Zealand and of course it’s not Fair Play without an update on the toilets from the Basin Reserve. Today’s co-cost is another familiar voice to Fair Play listeners. She’s one of New Zealand leading sports academics looking at issues from media representation to youth physical culture. She’s also researched sports fandom and has recently undertaken research around the recent men’s Rugby World Cup Professor Toni Bruce.‘There’s been a somewhat naive belief that if we just add women and stir things will change but we know that that doesn’t work. It’s not true. And it happens right across sport, it’s sports media, sports organizations. We know that if taken for granted, assumptions, practices and things are designed by and for men and if gender is not really on the agenda then women that women can enter in often but they tend not to stay long.’ Toni Bruce. November 27, 2019The Mind Matters: S1E6 - The Mary Cain FalloutOn this week's episode Dr. Jenny Susser and Chris Stafford discuss the fallout in coaching female athletes in the light of the runner Mary Cain suffering abuse. The good news is people are starting to feel safe enough to speak up. The bad news is it is still after the fact. Recently, Mary Cain began to tell her story. It is one of devastation and destruction that could have been dreams fulfilled and a legacy of championships. Her legacy will be more important now, but at great cost. We have talked offline about the Larry Nassar case, the abuse now coming to light in USA Swimming, the George Morris (equestrian) case, Penn State, and even Menendez. Our interest today is to take a look at the psychology of these cases, including our cultural mores both granting permission for these atrocities to occur and preventing us from being able to course-correct.For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.For more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. November 19, 2019The Horse Show: S4E21 - Marilyn Little Makes Her Mark and Lucinda Green Shares her Impressions. The Ocala Jockey Club Three Day Event took place last weekend in Florida and Chris Stafford went along to watch several of the top US riders do battle in the final major event of the season. It was an unseasonably cold few days but the courses rode well and spectators watched as two riders made their mark returning to the sport at this level. Chris spoke to the winner of the CCI4-Short competition Marilyn Little who brought the lovely mare RF Scandalous back into form following the disappointing injury she sustained just prior to the FEI World Equestrian Games last year. Marilyn explains what it took to get the mare sound and fit again and why this partnership is so special to her. Also making a remarkable comeback was Ocala based Sara Kozumplik Murphy riding Rubens D’Ysieux into fourth place in the CCI4-S. Not only did Sara break her back and neck last year but Rubens underwent colic surgery earlier this year so this result was particularly impressive. We also hear from Lucinda Green who shares her thoughts on the event and cross country riding. And as we discuss the future of the sport she explains why she thinks eventing should not be in the Olympic Games. It’s always an insightful conversation with Lucinda. For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.For more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. November 18, 2019Amazons: Emily Chappell, Ultra Endurance CyclistOur guest is British ultra endurance cyclist Emily Chappell who started cycling as a commuter before becoming a courier in London for six years. But she eventually swapped the narrow roads of London Town for the open countryside to challenge herself in ultra races and long distance cycling. In 2011-13 she cycled across Asia and from Wales to Japan. A year later she took on Iceland. And then in first three months of 2015 it was Anchorage to Seattle, which was great preparation for the Transcontinental Race. Alas after dropping out halfway when she suspected she was having a heart problem which turned out to be painful intercostal ribs, she determined to give it another shot in 2016. She has recently published her second book Where There’s a Will in which she shares that journey. And as well as the complex emotions of winning such an event, she reveals everything that being a woman in events like this entails, from periods to body image and how cycling has helped her battle with depression.Host: Chris StaffordRecorded: November 11, 2019For more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com.
