November 11, 2019The Bolder Woman: S2E6 - Penny Harris, Triathlete & CoachTriathlon and open water coach Penny Harris is a firm believer that the sport is so adaptable anyone can compete in triathlon at any age because it’s not always about the result. She has always enjoyed biking and running and as we often hear it was the swimming that challenged her. Now in her mid fifties she specializes in coaching open water swimming and helping athletes overcome their fear. All while pursuing her own goals in the sport. Penny says her high points so far have been getting to the start line of her first sprint triathlon. In 2012 at the 5i50 European Championship she pushed herself harder than ever before to finish runner-up. In the same year she travelled to Lanzarote for her first ever Ironman 70.3 and finished 4th in her age group. In 2013 she came 3rd in her age group in the Cotswold 113 race and a year later at the age of 50 Penny competed in her first long distance triathlon at Challenge Roth in Germany. Nowadays Penny is coaching triathlon age groupers and in her spare time she is a volunteer on the local Lifeboat near her home in South Wales. For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.For more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. Prior to becoming an Hon. Life Vice President in 1984, until the dissolution of the WFA in 1993, she served for a year in each capacity as Liaison Officer and Chairman. She was invited to become a member of the UEFA Women’s Football Committee in 1979 serving 7 terms until 1993. November 06, 2019Tucker Center Talks: S1E2 - Dr. Mary Jo Kane, Founder of the Tucker Center1In this episode Tucker Center director Dr. Nicole LaVoi talks to the founder and first director of the Tucker Center, Dr. Mary Jo Kane who explains the original story of the Tucker Center. They also discusses her seminal piece of research known as the "sport as continuum" paper. If you want to brush up, read the original 1995 paper (and you should because it's a good one) or the 2017 reflection piece that she wrote on the impact of her sport continuum theory. We also hear how the sport continuum theory may be applied to the current topic of, and debate surrounding, inclusion of transgender athletes. You can read Dr. Austin Stair Calhoun's, TC affiliated scholar, 2017 OpEd on her perspective on the complexities on applying and revisiting the sport as continuum theory. For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.For more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. November 05, 2019The Horse Show: S4E20 - Di Lampard's Steadfast Approach to SuccessDi Lampard was the only female Chef d’Equipe among 17 at this year’s FEI Nation’s Cup Final in Barcelona, which for equestrian sport is not a true reflection of the gender equity among riders, trainers and owners. But by that time she had achieved her team’s main goal for the second time in her tenure of qualifying for the Olympic Games. Building her team takes time and this year was a building year with Tokyo in mind and the choice of youth and experience paid off with a thrilling Nations Cup victory in Dublin this summer which paved the way to the European Championships where the team clinched the bronze medal. Di’s steadfast approach to nurturing younger riders and new combinations reflects her horsemanship and wealth of experience and bodes well for the Olympic challenge that lies ahead. Chris Stafford spoke to Di after a day of coaching to reflect on the progress so far and the road ahead. For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.For more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com.
