October 16, 2019The Mind Matters: S1E3 - The Retiring Athlete's Identity CrisisThe transition to athlete retirement is commonly said to take 2 – 3 years. While that may seem like a long time, it pales in comparison to how long it takes to become a great athlete. Not only preparing for this but also, keeping this in perspective are powerful tools for the retiring athlete. Identity is not a single entity, but a combination of influences, innate responses, and personality influenced desires. The problem arises as we put more and more emphasis on ONE element of our identity, ignoring the many others. Think about how you have introduced yourself over the years. What did you say when you were in high school? College? After that? Now? I suspect there is a link between our descriptions of self and how readily they pop out of your mouth, and who you see yourself as.
