In this episode of Tucker Center Talks, Dr. Nicole M. LaVoi talks with Dr. Austin Stair Calhoun, a Tucker Center Affiliated Scholar and currently the Chief of Staff at the University of Minnesota Medical School Education. We talk about our research together pertaining to family narratives in online coaching biographies of collegiate coaches and her dissertation on the gatekeepers who decide what and how online coaching biographies are written. We discuss new data 10 years later, why erasing same-sex family narratives matters in perpetuating homophobia and heterosexism, and implications for athletic administrators.

The Ocala Jockey Club Three Day Event took place last weekend in Florida and Chris Stafford went along to watch several of the top US riders do battle in the final major event of the season. It was an unseasonably cold few days but the courses rode well and spectators watched as two riders made their mark returning to the sport at this level. Chris spoke to the winner of the CCI4-Short competition Marilyn Little who brought the lovely mare RF Scandalous back into form following the disappointing injury she sustained just prior to the FEI World Equestrian Games last year. Marilyn explains what it took to get the mare sound and fit again and why this partnership is so special to her.  Also making a remarkable comeback was Ocala based Sara Kozumplik Murphy riding Rubens D’Ysieux into fourth place in the CCI4-S.  Not only did Sara break her back and neck last year but Rubens underwent colic surgery earlier this year so this result was particularly impressive.  We also hear from Lucinda Green who shares her thoughts on the event and cross country riding.  And as we discuss the future of the sport she explains why she thinks eventing should not be in the Olympic Games.  It’s always an insightful conversation with Lucinda.

Our guest is British ultra endurance cyclist Emily Chappell who started cycling as a commuter before becoming a courier in London for six years. But she eventually swapped the narrow roads of London Town for the open countryside to challenge herself in ultra races and long distance cycling.  In 2011-13 she cycled across Asia and from Wales to Japan. A year later she took on Iceland. And then in first three months of 2015 it was Anchorage to Seattle, which was great preparation for the Transcontinental Race. Alas after dropping out halfway when she suspected she was having a heart problem which turned out to be painful intercostal ribs, she determined to give it another shot in 2016. She has recently published her second book Where There’s a Will in which she shares that journey. And as well as the complex emotions of winning such an event, she reveals everything that being a woman in events like this entails, from periods to body image and how cycling has helped her battle with depression.

Helena Hlas, 27, was born to Czech parents and are up in Winnipeg, Canada. Later, she spent several years in Calgary pursuing alpine ski racing dreams before discovering rowing during her studies at the University of Calgary. She completed her Masters of Kinesiology at the University of Western Ontario in London, on the theme of doping in sport before relocating to Prague to race with the Czech National Team.  After an unsuccessful trialling season in the spring of 2019 Helena decided to relocate yet again, this time to Lucerne where she now spends her days on the crystal clear Swiss waters rowing and coaching. She is also in the process of starting her own company to help athletes earn additional income doing what they do best. Helena is passionate about ethics and reducing barriers to performance in sport. She wrote an article entitled Racing Backwards: Addressing Sexism in Contemporary Sport which addresses open sexism at a well known Swiss Rowing Club.

Triathlon and open water coach Penny Harris is a firm believer that the sport is so adaptable anyone can compete in triathlon at any age because it’s not always about the result.  She has always enjoyed biking and running and as we often hear it was the swimming that challenged her. Now in her mid fifties she specializes in coaching open water swimming and helping athletes overcome their fear. All while pursuing her own goals in the sport.  Penny says her high points so far have been getting to the start line of her first sprint triathlon. In 2012 at the 5i50 European Championship she pushed herself harder than ever before to finish runner-up. In the same year she travelled to Lanzarote for her first ever Ironman 70.3 and finished 4th in her age group. In 2013 she came 3rd in her age group in the Cotswold 113 race and a year later at the age of 50 Penny competed in her first long distance triathlon at Challenge Roth in Germany.  Nowadays Penny is coaching triathlon age groupers and in her spare time she is a volunteer on the local Lifeboat near her home in South Wales.

Patricia Gregory is an historian of women’s football in the UK who is embarking on her first book on its history. Patricia became the Hon. Assistant Secretary of the Women’s Football Association from its inception until taking over as Hon. Secretary from Arthur Hobbs in 1972.  A position she held until 1981 when through her encouragement a full time official was appointed –  a full time job, running a club and a league as well as duties for the WFA proved too much.  Prior to becoming an Hon. Life Vice President in 1984, until the dissolution of the WFA in 1993, she served for a year in each capacity as Liaison Officer and Chairman.  She was invited to become a member of the UEFA Women’s Football Committee in 1979 serving 7 terms until 1993.  After the WFA ceased she served for a time on The Women’s Football Alliance Committee of The FA.
