October 16, 2019The Mind Matters: S1E3 - The Retiring Athlete's Identity CrisisThe transition to athlete retirement is commonly said to take 2 – 3 years. While that may seem like a long time, it pales in comparison to how long it takes to become a great athlete. Not only preparing for this but also, keeping this in perspective are powerful tools for the retiring athlete. Identity is not a single entity, but a combination of influences, innate responses, and personality influenced desires. The problem arises as we put more and more emphasis on ONE element of our identity, ignoring the many others. Think about how you have introduced yourself over the years. What did you say when you were in high school? College? After that? Now? I suspect there is a link between our descriptions of self and how readily they pop out of your mouth, and who you see yourself as. October 11, 2019Bit by Bit: S1E6 - Game Day StrategyMental strength training is an important, albeit underrated, contributor to athletic success. In this final episode of the series Erin McGuire reviews previous episodes and presents a game day strategy. Mental strength training is akin to physical strength training- you don’t go to the gym once and become fit overnight. Likewise- you build your mental strength by applying skills in real-time. Build your self-awareness, implement tools, see what works, try again. Start with your goals, think about what you need to do to achieve them. Think about what you can control, and act upon it as you pursue your goals. When it’s crunch time, block out negativity by visualizing yourself performing to the best of your ability. How many years have you trained? How many hours of practice have you logged? How many times have you drilled a skill? You can do this. Clear your headspace, and coach yourself like the athlete you are by using positive, instructional, and motivational cues. Building mental fitness starts with you.
