In this episode Tucker Center director Dr. Nicole LaVoi talks to the founder and first director of the Tucker Center, Dr. Mary Jo Kane who explains the original story of the Tucker Center.  They also discusses her seminal piece of research known as the "sport as continuum" paper. If you want to brush up, read the original 1995 paper (and you should because it's a good one) or the 2017 reflection piece  that she wrote on the impact of her sport continuum theory. We also hear how the sport continuum theory may be applied to the current topic of, and debate surrounding, inclusion of transgender athletes. You can read Dr. Austin Stair Calhoun's, TC affiliated scholar, 2017 OpEd on her perspective on the complexities on applying and revisiting the sport as continuum theory.

Di Lampard was the only female Chef d’Equipe among 17 at this year’s FEI Nation’s Cup Final in Barcelona, which for equestrian sport is not a true reflection of the gender equity among riders, trainers and owners. But by that time she had achieved her team’s main goal for the second time in her tenure of qualifying for the Olympic Games.  Building her team takes time and this year was a building year with Tokyo in mind and the choice of youth and experience paid off with a thrilling Nations Cup victory in Dublin this summer which paved the way to the European Championships where the team clinched the bronze medal.  Di’s steadfast approach to nurturing younger riders and new combinations reflects her horsemanship and wealth of experience and bodes well for the Olympic challenge that lies ahead.  Chris Stafford spoke to Di after a day of coaching to reflect on the progress so far and the road ahead.

WiSP Ambassador Naya Tapper just returned from the UK where she and 11 other teammates took part in the debut of RugbyX, a new 5-a-side format for the game.  Naya tells us what it was like and explains the 1v1 play and why she would love to play this format again.  We also hear about her upcoming rugby clinic and to round off the year the team will be heading to Dubai and South Africa for the sevens tournaments.

On this week’s show Dr Jenny Susser unpacks the many intricate personality traits that make the difference between participating and winning in sport.  We discuss egoism, self-importance, selfishness, narcissism and how these are all on a spectrum with no one size fits all.  What kind of person is attracted to individual sport versus a team sport. Is there room for selfishness in a team environment and what does an athlete invest to reach success. We don’t have all the answers but we peel off some of the layers to better understand what make an athlete elite.

This month, we check in with former Olympic athlete Beatrice Faumuina winner about diversity and life after sport, American academic Dr. Nicole La Voi about the importance of sport, academia, the role of men in women's sport and media coverage of women. Shellie Edington has reached a crossroads in her crossfire career at the age of 55 with medals in every color she is now focusing on new goals. In the 54 CF Games from 2014 to 2017 she has won five gold medals, a silver and bronze. Nowadays Shellie also has a business to run having developed Tumblin4Kids, a mobile gymnastics program with her background as a gymnast when she was a teenager. Her passion for Crossfit has given her a new perspective.  She says:  “Being an athlete in your 50’s is much different than when you’re young, and surprisingly it’s better. For starters, I’m smarter about my body. After all these years I finally know exactly what to do to keep myself strong, in shape, and healthy. I understand food and how if can benefit me. I understand recovery and relaxation. And I understand that I need to invest in myself.”  Shellie had to learn to overcome competitive anxiety with the help of a sports psychologist and it changed her mental game. And with her experience in Crossfit she exposes the value of Crossfit health for women to stay stronger longer.
