On this week’s show Dr Jenny Susser unpacks the many intricate personality traits that make the difference between participating and winning in sport.  We discuss egoism, self-importance, selfishness, narcissism and how these are all on a spectrum with no one size fits all.  What kind of person is attracted to individual sport versus a team sport. Is there room for selfishness in a team environment and what does an athlete invest to reach success. We don’t have all the answers but we peel off some of the layers to better understand what make an athlete elite.

Shellie Edington has reached a crossroads in her crossfire career at the age of 55 with medals in every color she is now focusing on new goals. In the 54 CF Games from 2014 to 2017 she has won five gold medals, a silver and bronze. Nowadays Shellie also has a business to run having developed Tumblin4Kids, a mobile gymnastics program with her background as a gymnast when she was a teenager. Her passion for Crossfit has given her a new perspective.  She says:  “Being an athlete in your 50’s is much different than when you’re young, and surprisingly it’s better. For starters, I’m smarter about my body. After all these years I finally know exactly what to do to keep myself strong, in shape, and healthy. I understand food and how if can benefit me. I understand recovery and relaxation. And I understand that I need to invest in myself.”  Shellie had to learn to overcome competitive anxiety with the help of a sports psychologist and it changed her mental game. And with her experience in Crossfit she exposes the value of Crossfit health for women to stay stronger longer.

Brandi Mitchell is the founder of San Diego Soccer Women for women over 30 who play recreational soccer. With more than 1000 players in the San Diego area the teams play through the year with a break over the holidays in the fall. Brandi’s social media efforts and partnerships with women's soccer organizations around the world have brought visibility to the athletes playing in their senior years, including into their late seventies and early eighties using their website to provide resources and information.  Brandi has been a life-long soccer enthusiast and started playing youth soccer in Southern California at age five continuing through her senior year of high school. She was introduced to the adult soccer community in San Diego at age 27, where she was cheered on by her husband and children. Sixteen years later, at age 43, she continues to play several times per week, now in age 30+ and 40+ leagues.

My guest this week is 17 year old Emma Reichow who is been having a bumper year in the equitation and jumping arenas. Together with the nine year old Dutch Warmblood mare Forever Alve won the Neue Schule/USEF Junior Jumper Championship at Harrisburg Show.  Emma already won a team silver and finished fourth individually at the Adequan/ FEI North American Young Rider Championships this year.  She also won the  $5,000 Equitation Challenge at Temecula Valley National Horse Show and last year she won the prestigious R.W. Mutch Equitation Championship. This year Emma finished third in the championship.  Emma was born in Texas and moved to the Philippines when she was two where she learned to ride before moving to Menlo Park in Northern California where she trains with Harley and Olivia Brown.  With five horses in work, three of them at FEI level Emma has found form which she hopes she will carry over to the Washington International this week before they head to Kentucky for the National Horse Show.  Chris Stafford spoke to her before she headed back east to round off the fall season.

Maria Stuber has recently founded the Women Ski Coaches Association, which is a grassroots organization that gives women ski coaches a voice.  The WSCA goals are to develop, retain and advance women in ski coaching leadership.  It already has over 90 members and has unanimous support from women head coaches and program directors in US cross-country skiing. Maria is the Head Men’s and Women’s Ski Coach at The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN.  She leads the largest ski team of any division in the NCAA, serves as president of the Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) conference, and is an assistant coach to the men’s and women’s cross-country running teams. So she has a unique perspective on the gender inequality among ski coaches. As Maria explains while the organization was founded in the cross country ski discipline discussions are already underway with other areas of ski coaching such as alpine and ski jumping to represent all ski disciplines.
