October 02, 2019The Mind Matters: S1E2 - The Social Media Impact on AthletesOn this week’s episode Jenny and Chris discuss the impact of social media on athletes and performance. As society is surrounded by social media and everyone has a platform for their opinion, teaching athletes to manage this new and powerful distractor is a big job for sport psychologists. Competitive anxiety is enough to manage without having to deal with some anonymous troll calling you fat or useless. People have become very mean behind their social media platforms. There is no accountability and, usually, no identity. What this does to the mind of the athlete can be distracting and damaging. For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.For more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. September 23, 2019Bit by Bit: S1E5 - How to Mentally Rehearse your PerformanceOn episode 5 Erin McGuire discusses mentally rehearsing your performance. Visualization has several names: mental rehearsal, imagery, guided imagery- are just a few of the interchangeable terms used to describe this skill. Visualization refers to imagining yourself performing, as if you were real-time in the moment, executing your play perfectly, exactly as planned.. Visualization incorporates all senses to create the most realistic image in the athlete’s head. Start by finding a comfortable place with limited distractions, you can close your eyes if that helps. Bring your attention to your breathing, slowing your breaths signaling your body to relax and clearing your headspace. Then, step into your playing field. What are you seeing? Hearing? Feeling? Even smelling or tasting come into play in certain sports. Once you’ve created your playing field, rehearse your performance. You are imaging yourself executing your skill perfectly, confidently, from start to finish. For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.For more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com.
