June 26, 2019The Bolder Woman: S1E19 - Lucinda Green, EventerMy guest this week is British Eventer Lucinda Green who at 66 has not lost one ounce of her passion and dedication to horses and horse sport. Lucinda epitomizes being a sportswoman whether she is training horses or coaching riders around the world or competing on her only horse. She began riding at the age of four but didn’t own her own horse until she was 15. Be Fair proved to be a birthday present that would launch her career and their partnership forever be carved in the history books of the sport. They made their Olympic debut in 1973 and this was only the beginning of Lucinda‘s success, as she went on to claim a number of gold and silver medals and two European Championships. In 1977 Lucinda scored a hat trick, coming first at Badminton, Burghley and the European Championships. She is the only rider to have won the prestigious Badminton six times, on six different horses from 1973 to 1984. Lucinda has won the Tony Collins Trophy, awarded to the rider with the most British Eventing points in an eventing season, a record seven times and in 2008 won the outstanding contribution to equestrianism award. No-one has done more to promote the sport and influence generations of event riders than Lucinda in her role as British Team Selector, Coach, Trainer and Journalist. Lucinda still competes on her one horse and has no groom to help her, instead she enjoys the sport with the same enthusiasm as she did some 50 years ago.For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.For more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. June 19, 2019The Bolder Woman: S1E18 - Nonagenarian Rita Price Still Dances on the Tennis CourtIt’s not often that one gets to have compelling conversations with women in their 90’s who are still passionate about their chosen sport and as competitive as ever, even fitter than they were in their 70’s. This is one of those interviews that draws you in when you think you’re going to discuss their sporting career and those stand out moments, the titles and the trophies, touching on their past to set the story in context. But then the conversation lingers on a distant time in their life that shaped their future and with the years those memories become more precious, deserving to be shared with a wider audience and memorialized. That is one of the reasons why it’s important to record these biographical stories in the person’s own voice. So when we were introduced to Rita Price who turns 93 this week it was obvious that this was a story to be told and so we had a wonderful conversation about her tennis yes but also about her life growing up in New York during the Second World War. Rita shares those memories of being a dancer and playing the night clubs and how tennis became a natural partner to her dancing career. She is rightly proud of her achievements on the court, in singles, doubles and mixed doubles and recalls those highlights, her partners and the tournaments that paved the way. An Inductee of the Colorado Hall of Fame in 2013 which proved to be a bumper year for Rita. She continues to play a few times a week, competes with her partner Jane Lutz with who she won the 90s Nationals in La Jolla recently, and in between the tennis she stays fit with gym work and Tai Chi, and of course she still sings and dances. June 18, 2019The Horse Show: S4E13 - Emily Karp Rides AgainExactly two years ago today Hunter/Jumper rider Emily Karp, 21. suffered serious injuries when she fell from her horse while schooling over a grid of cavaletti. She sustained nerve damage to C5-6-7 in her neck which left her paralyzed in a wheelchair and needing to learn to walk again. Doctors told her parents: “Your daughter was this close to being paralyzed for the rest of her life.” However, it wasn’t long before her desire to get back on the horse again motivated her to ride her old faithful Morgan rescue When In Rome or “Romeo”—a Morgan pony rescue, who she knew would be safe to get her started again. The long road of rehab and recovery began but it wasn’t long after the accident that Emily decided that she wanted to turn professional; not even a frightening accident was going to deter her from doing what she loved. Now two years later and she has begun showing in hunters again with her mare H.E.
