June 18, 2019The Horse Show: S4E13 - Emily Karp Rides AgainExactly two years ago today Hunter/Jumper rider Emily Karp, 21. suffered serious injuries when she fell from her horse while schooling over a grid of cavaletti. She sustained nerve damage to C5-6-7 in her neck which left her paralyzed in a wheelchair and needing to learn to walk again. Doctors told her parents: “Your daughter was this close to being paralyzed for the rest of her life.” However, it wasn’t long before her desire to get back on the horse again motivated her to ride her old faithful Morgan rescue When In Rome or “Romeo”—a Morgan pony rescue, who she knew would be safe to get her started again. The long road of rehab and recovery began but it wasn’t long after the accident that Emily decided that she wanted to turn professional; not even a frightening accident was going to deter her from doing what she loved. Now two years later and she has begun showing in hunters again with her mare H.E. Regality. For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.For more conversations from the world of women’s sport including articles, blogs, videos and podcasts visit wispsports.com. June 11, 2019The Horse Show: S4E12 - Kelli Cruciotti & Caitlin HendersonThis week's show focuses on two riders in different sports; one a young professional show jumper and the other an Adult Amateur Eventer. Kelli Cruciotti won her first major show jumping Grand Prix this past weekend when she partnered her Belgian Warmblood mare Hadja van Orshof to victory in the $204,000 Coca Cola Grand Prix at the Tryon International Equestrian Center. The conditions were less than idea but the 22 year old from Colorado pulled out all the stops to beat a competitive field and clinch her second win of the week. Chris Stafford spoke to Kelli after she arrived back home to hear what this means to her and how she is establishing her career as a young professional. We also hear from an adult amateur Eventer, Caitlin Henderson, who is a full time nurse practitioner in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Caitlin competes with just one horse, her off the track Thoroughbred Creative Design and recently made her four-star debut at the Bromont CCI4-L event in Canada. We hear how Caitlin has transferred some of her skills from being a soccer player to riding and what she learned when she was being coached in a team sport not least of all her attention to detail in training for an event.
