From mobsters to kings to arms dealers and judges to councilmen to speakeasys, country clubs and exclusive means clubs, Phil has seen it all. He has prepared meals for kings and he knows how to get maximum publicity doing it and he is the man behind the greatest hamburger.

Phil has continually evolved his ideas and concepts from membership only spots to open kitchens and locks on the door - and he continues to do that today with the Network Bar and Trinity Groves.

Phil believes that the fear of failure is much more powerful than the sweet smell of success. He knows that people don’t want the same thing, they want something different. He knows what they want before they do.

He has created concepts that have been replicated over and over. He has done more to pioneer the lifestyle and experiences we see in so many restaurants and bars today. Whether it is the open kitchen concepts (NAGS HEAD PUB) were you can see your meal being prepared, or the food being brought to your table for you to see it before it is cooked. He is also the man behind the salad bar and putting locks on his doors and creating members only concepts.

Phil knew people would pay to have their pictures on the wall, they would buy mugs with their name on it, they would pay to inscribe their names in the bar. He knew they would pay for memberships (ROMANOS 300) before the concept ever opened. At one concept (THE KEY HOLE), he put a padlock on the door and sold thousands of keys to open the lock. He knew that business men wanted to meet (THE NETWORK BAR) and eat at places that other business men were at. He knew that the experience and lifestyle is what people wanted and he knew and still knows how to deliver on that idea.

Ben Davis the founder of The Gents Place will tell future entrepreneurs to stop waiting, there are no excuses, just do it... the worst case is you will fail and you will learn and try again. You have to believe that failure is part of your success story.

In 2008, 25 year old Ben Davis decided to start his business, and to start a business at the highest price point in the area. The economy was crashing, he had no experience in the barbershop business, his son had just had open heart surgery and he had no money. But he left a great job working for a great boss to do his thing, to be the business man he knew he wanted to be.

Ben will tell you, that you have to jump in without hesitation, that you cannot let fear paralyze you and dictate your future. Ben jumped head first into a traditional barbershop industry, that he knew very little about, except that he didn't like it the way it was. He brought his interest in the experiential economy to a traditional business and created a new lifestyle brand approach to a boring and sometimes dreaded haircut experience.

His brand is about looking good and feeling good and that is key to you feeling and being successful. He believes you are never fully dressed without great hair.

The Gents Place is much more than just a haircut, it is a lifestyle of success.

When you look and feel your best, you will do your best. That is what Ben Davis believes. He has taken the barbershop concept, through in some speak easy vibe and created a place to look your best, meet people and do some business while sipping on a fine whiskey.

Ben doesn't run his company The Gents Place like the average barbershop, he runs it like a business for business people. He also knows how to get his message across and he knows how to pull people in. Instead of giving away a free haircut to get new customers in, he offers them a free membership for a day. He is selling you the lifestyle that you already want to be a part of.

For several months I have been thinking about doing an episode about disruption and change in regards to companies like Toys R Us and Blockbuster.

At first I was just going to do a tear down on why went wrong with Toys R Us but it was so negative I didn't want to do just that. I wasn't sure how I could balance it until recently, when I heard Ellen Barker the Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer for Texas Instruments talk about this subject in regards to Texas Instruments.

It was a story I didn't know at all. From my narrow outsider perspective I thought Texas Instruments had grown smaller and irrelevant over the years, when in fact they are an impressive example of change and avoiding disruption to their business. They are far from obsolete, they have tripled their revenue and become very profitable by focusing more on some of the lesser known products and what they are truly great at.

More than 55% of jobs are some sort of sales job and more than 75% of educated workers end up in a sales job at sometime in their life. Also, when you take a look at many leaders out there, they tend to have similar or many times the same characteristics or abilities of great sellers, like being a strong story teller or having great empathy for others. Some people pride themselves on being a seller or in sales, but most don't even though a big part of their job is selling. Whether you are selling your personal ability and or skill set to your boss or you are working in a capacity where you are representing your company... you are selling something. So today I thought it would be good to sit down with someone that knows a thing or two about selling and what makes a great sales person. Here is the conversation with Sean Piket.

We will talk about sales and the sales process, like prospecting on purpose and ascending the credibility ladder.
