  • 049: Phyllis Sarkaria Women Warriors: Gaining Influence In Male Environments

About Phyllis Sarkaria: Phyllis coaches both men and women in gaining influence in corporations and organizations. She has 25+ years of leadership experience and she's a Master Corporate Executive Coach, Facilitator, and a trusted advisor to the companies she works with. She has held executive roles in government affairs and human resources. Phyllis worked with the energy industry for almost 20 years, and 10 years of that was as a regulatory lobbyist. Before founding the Sarkaria Group, a leadership consulting group, Phyllis served as an internal advisor to C-Level Executives at Quidel Corporation. She was responsible for the Company's global HR strategy for over a dozen years. She also teaches Ethics and HR analytics in the Organizational Leadership Master's Program and the Human Resources Master's Program at Claremont Lincoln University and she is a member of the faculty for C.B. Bowman's Workplace Equity and Equality program. Phyllis has an MBA from Texas Tech University and an MA in Ethical Leadership at Claremont Lincoln University. She has numerous coaching certifications, and she's also in the process of publishing her book called "Map: A Field-Guide For Your Leadership Journey".

In this episode, Jordan and Phyllis discuss:

    • Working in government affairs and recognizing the opportunity to lead and influence
    • How your cultural background influences how you are perceived
    • How a woman can gain influence in a predominantly male environment
    • Common struggles in executives and the ROI for listening and caring

    Key Takeaways

    • When you do the right things with people and remove the boundaries and hurdles, people can be productive and great things can happen in the organization.
    • Challenge yourself to think about what the pain points are for the people you're trying to influence. You have to know how your suggestion or your idea is going to impact what keeps people up at night.
    • Your tone of voice, confidence and assertiveness is just as important as the words you're trying to get across.
    • You have to find new avenues and tools for growth - holding on to what got you to where you are might prevent you from ever going further.

"Many times we have great ideas and we want to pursue those… but if it's not addressing pain points for someone at a higher level, then they're likely to see it as vitamins rather than a painkiller. Those are not necessarily seen as adding the greatest value in the organization. " — Phyllis Sarkaria

    • To build your company, get testimonials from people who respect you for how they've gained or transformed from your coaching.
    • Coaching is mostly not about telling people what to do, it's sharing your experience and what strategies worked and what can work for them too.
    • Failure is not the opposite of success, giving up is. You can't fail as long as you're pushing through all setbacks and hindrances.

  • Ep 044: Gregg Ward: The Platinum Rule - Respectful Leadership Is Worth More Than Gold

About Gregg Ward: He was a professional actor, writer, director and producer in New York and in London. He was also a trainer in the New York City Police Department using live theater in helping police handle difficult situations that they encounter. He was also a freelance journalist on an assignment for BBC in the United Kingdom. Now, he serves as a speaker, consultant, trainer and executive coach for global corporations and government on respect, emotional intelligence, and cultural transformation. He's also the author of the award-winning, best-selling business fable, "The Respectful Leader". He's the founder and executive director of the Center For Respectful Leadership. He's also a little league umpire in his spare time.

In this episode, Jordan and Gregg discuss:

    • The broader and feeling meaning of "diversity" - talking about Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as a white guy.
    • Humanity's tendency of simplifying everything into binary systems
    • What role does respect play in our lives and what does it mean to be a "respectful leader" - the Golden Rule and the Platinum Rule
    • Earning someone's respect versus earning someone's trust - and how you can earn both at the same time.
    • Developing respectful directness and personal resilience

    Key Takeaways

    • There's more to diversity than just race - there's diversity of opinion, experience, knowledge, expertise, skills and nationality.
    • Some things can't be simplified into binary systems. There's a whole spectrum of diversity in life and failing to recognize that is neither honest nor accurate.
    • When a boss says "you need to earn my respect", what happens is that the subordinate actually loses respect for the boss.
    • People don't always want to be treated the way you want to be treated and so instead, you should treat others the way they want to be treated.
    • Respect people, respect yourself, and you'll do okay.

"If we have a level of respect for each other, then it's very likely that we're gonna work together just fine… Treat someone with respect no matter who they are." — Gregg Ward

  • Ep 042: Mercedes Martin: Rewiring Leadership In A Polarized World

About Mercedes Martin: She has over two decades of experience in strategic business consulting, inclusion coaching, global diversity and leadership development. Prior to launching her current consultancy, Mercedes worked at Ernst and Young for almost ten years in talent development, organizational, change and as an executive coach. After Ernst and Young, she was Executive Vice President of Business, Transformation and Innovation at Ashton212 consulting firm. Mercedes served as staff development officer in the United States AirForce early in her career.

Mercedes is a native Spanish speaker and a master corporate coach. She has worked with Fortune 500 companies including PepsiCo, Proctor and Gamble, Shell Oil, and Kellogs. Her global engagements have been across Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Denmark, El Salvador, England, Mexico, Nigeria, Spain, and the United States.

In this episode, Jordan and Mercedes discuss:

    • What really keeps corporate leaders from responding to social issues and what a "safe and brave space" looks like
    • Mercedes conversation with the leader of the Proud Boys and with a North Carolina Trump supporter who carried a gun and had a tattoo of the Buddha.
    • How to set up learning experiences or conversations where people can learn and exchange information without blame or shame
    • Finding another perspective and another way of navigating polarity
    • Why people find it so hard to navigate through polarizing issues and what the problem really is

    Key Takeaways

    • Create a safe and brave space for people to be able to talk freely without fear of judgement - to be able to go against the status quo and still be respected and included
    • Listen to all the sides of an issue - don't drown in your confirmation bias by just listening to what you already believe in. Get out of your own "echo chamber".
    • Be mature enough to discuss and respond to issues that have any aspect of VUCA (volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity)
    • Oftentimes, it's not really the data that sets people off - it's the historical and emotional aspect of it that could "trigger" a negative response. Understanding this is the key to having better conversations with others

  • Ep 040: Tara McCool: Compassionate Leadership Tougher Than You Think

About Tara McCool: She began her career in broadcasting and journalism which was where she first learned about the importance of bringing compassion to the workplace. From devastated interviewees to nervous live guests, she felt that compassion needed to be present to help the person feel safe and for the interview to be successful. Over 20 years later, when she transitioned to corporate and worked her way to an executive role, leading human resources and communications, compassion was once again a critical component to her success. She believed self-compassion and compassion for others is a skill that must be developed to be a truly aware and impactful leader. After 10 years of coaching leaders and employees through many challenging situations, Tara decided to focus solely on leadership awareness through her own consulting company. She believes that most leaders have great intentions and want their people to be happy. Many are just aren't aware that their actions or inactions are actually making people miserable. With a little guidance, leaders can make small changes that may have a big impact on the overall happiness and performance of their team.

In this episode, Jordan and Tara discuss:

    • The importance of compassion in the workplace, especially in leaders, and how you can develop compassion.
    • The true meaning of compassion - alleviate the suffering without coddling.
    • Honesty and being clear in giving feedback about what people could be doing wrong.
    • How you can accept negative feedback, wherever you are coming from.

    Key Takeaways

    • A compassionate leader notices when a team member is in distress, they take action to get them through it. Awareness is key in being a compassionate leader.
    • Surround yourself with people who will be honest and direct with you when you're not being a good leader.
    • Compassionate leadership essentials: have the strength to be vulnerable, have the strength, to be honest, build a foundation of trust, be willing to have tough conversations when needed.
    • Giving honest feedback is a gift that you give to someone. It's your responsibility as a leader and a teammate to provide clarity and accountability to people that need it in the workplace.

"A leader who thinks only about themselves is not going to garner the same amount of respect as a leader who's truly thinking about their team at all times." — Tara McCool
