Masterpieces from the Gilman and Gonzalez-Falla collection

The exhibition presents a selection of masterpieces from the history

of photography, part of the collection of Sondra Gilman and Celso

Gonzalez-Falla. Based in New York, it includes over 1500 original

prints by some of the greatest photographers of the 20th and 21st

centuries. Through visual confrontations, the visitor is invited to

experience the power of the photographic line through these sublime

works. The photographs by Berenice Abbott, Robert Adams, Walker

Evans, Rineke Dijkstra, Man Ray and Lee Friedlander, among others,

thus resonate, beyond their historical temporality and geographic

considerations, by their formal correspondences.

The exhibition will take place at the Musée D'Elysée in Lausanne from 31 January to 6 May 2018

January is the month in Switzerland when orchids are often on show, and last week I was at a magnificent orchid show in Bern. The show was in the greenhouses of the City of Bern, in the superb setting of the Elfenau Park, and was organised by the Swiss Orchid Society, which comprises of several regional enthusiast groups. I was really taken with the Tiger Orchids, or Gramatophyllum speciosum, and was very pleased to find that they aren't just a collectors rarity, but can be bought in Switzerland relatively easily.

The changes in US environmental policies since the election of Donald Trump means scientists working in climate change are finding their work being undermined or even censored.

Other countries around the world are seeing this as an opportunity to lure away some of the best brains in the field.
