The tiny Pacific Island country of Kiribati is virtually unknown to many Australians. But the Pacific community in general is featuring more in Australia’s foreign policy of late. Music is a part of the culture and daily life across many pacific countries including Kiribati. And the local LGBT group is using it to engage the wider population.

To start to change hearts and minds in the Island country, the local LGBT community knew they needed to get creative. So they made their own song to explain the challenges of the LGBT community. Tebeio Tamton is the Founder of BIMBA Kiribati, the group who put together the song “BIMBA Rhythm”.

For over 28 years, JOY has been the voice of the LGBTI community. We have grown from a small, part-time station to broadcasting 24 hours a day with a slate of 27 different shows, broadcast by over 250 volunteers. We’re proudly Australia’s only rainbow radio station and one of only 3 full-time, free to air LGBTI radio stations in the world.

While we have grown enormously in that time, we’re not done yet. We have moved into the Victorian Pride Centre in new studios that set us up for a big future. JOY has big plans to provide more services for our community. We at World Wide Wave want to keep bringing the stories of the LGBTI community around the globe to you.

Have you ever asked yourself, what is the difference between a country that embraces and pursues progressive rights for LGBTIQ people and those countries to repress and even strengthen their anti-LGBTI direction. Is it culture, demographics, history, religion …it is a complex question.

Mark Gevisser, author of The Pink Line: Journeys Across The World’s Pink Frontiers, has asked that exact question. Aside from proposing a theory of the “have’s versus the have-not’s” in LGBTI rights, the book also follows the lives of a variety of LGBTI people and their different experiences as they negotiate The Pink Line.

Conflicts across the globe have seen a rise in asylum seekers worldwide. Escaping war or persecution can be even more challenging if you are LGBTIQ. We have heard stories of continued persecution in refugee camps and escapes to countries where queer people are still not welcome. And what about when you arrive in your resettlement country? How do you start from scratch to forge a new life in an unknown land?

One organisation that is standing by queer asylum seekers is Many Coloured Sky. They support LGBTIQ+ organisations with capacity building, planning and project development, and empower those at the margins and intersections of LGBTIQ+ communities to participate fully and equally. Ian Seal, the founder of Many Coloured Sky, joins us in this World Wide Wave podcast.
