  • Germany: Queer Identities and Advocacy
It was 5 years ago when we had a guest on the show that blew our mind. He told us of a little known German man – Karl-Heinrich Ulrichs. And what was special about Karl? Well he was a German lawyer and jurist, and the first openly gay activist of the modern era. In 1867, when same-sex attraction was taboo and the term ‘homosexuality’ didn’t even exist, he argued publicly that same sex attracted people should be treated the same as everyone else.
And Ulrichs was not alone. His followers were called Urnings and for almost 40 years, that became the main word same-sex attracted men in Germany went by. They became perhaps the first queer political movement. To find out about the earliest of queer rights, we are joined tonight by Dr Douglas Pretsell – Doctoral Candidate in History at La Trobe University and author of the thesis titled – ‘The Age of the Urning: Queer Identities and Advocacy in Germany, 1864−1897’.

  • New Zealand: Crossing The Lines
There are many books written about World War Two. They document the advances and losses. They illustrate the patriotism and bravery – and even sometimes the foolishness and cruelty of war. However there are very few books that detail the life of homosexual people in wartime – and certainly none from New Zealand. Well… that is, until now.
One Kiwi author uncovered the story of three gay female impersonators, part of the New Zealand Army Corps. Their job was to entertain the troops – and they did so in many ways! What started as a casual chat about life in the army for a research project, turned into an 11 year obsession for author and academic Brent Coutts. The result was the book – Crossing The Lines, The Story of Three Homosexual Soldiers in World War II.

  • Samoa: Queer Pasifika
This week, the annual Midsumma Festival commences! We have 22 days of the best queer arts, culture, events, parties and Pride. It’s a change for Victoria’s rainbow community to show its true colours. Midsumma is also a celebration of difference and diversity. And the celebration goes beyond the boundaries of the state of Victoria.
In exploring some of the internationally focused events, tonight we turn to our regional neighbours of the Pacific. Storytelling is a vital way of communicating across generations and across cultures. And there is a Midsumma event that will do just that – Queer Pasifika: The Rebirth of The Cool. We will be joined in the studio by the Samoan fa’afafine host of the event, Amao Leota Lu.

  • Best of 2021
As 2021 comes to an end, you might be heaving a huge sigh of relief. And we don’t yet know what to expect in 2022. One thing we can guarantee is that JOY will continue to bring you the diverse stories of the rainbow community from around the world, in all its pain, inspiration and – dare I say – joy!
So tonight we thought we would bring you a few of our favourite shows and guests from 2021. And it was a hard choice. From Turkey to Jamaica, Russia to Bermuda, we have covered all points of the globe, before we settled on:

    * How street walking and public kiss-ins are challenging views on LGBT people in the Dominican Republic.

    * We speak to Lithuania’s first openly gay Member of Parliament about his plans for law changes.

    * Hear an openly queer Palestinian singer who is a rare voice of tolerance.

    * And be inspired by a young queer person in Nigeria taking to the airwaves to fight homophobia.

  • USA: Leaving Isn’t the Hardest Thing
Sometimes life gets hard. And it can be hard to know what the future might hold. But then you hear about tonight’s guest. She grew up in a cult, was raised in seven different countries, joined the Air Force and was forced out due to her sexuality. She lived out of her car and says she learned more about people from her jobs as a bouncer in a gay bar and a cable guy.
Her name is Lauren Hough and she is a New York Times best-selling author and essayist. Her latest book – Leaving Isn’t the Hardest Thing – is a series of extremely personal yet often humorous insights into a life that has been anything but ordinary.

  • Australia: Fitting in to Society as LGBTIQ and Multicultural
Fitting in can be a challenge for multicultural people in Australia. But if you are LGBTIQ and multicultural, a whole new complexity develops about where and how you fit in to Australian society. This intersectionality of culture diversity and sexual orientation or gender diversity is full of hidden hurdles.
The Melbourne-based Australian GLBTIQ Multicultural Council has delved into the personal stories of racism and other forms of discrimination. Their report, titled – Navigating Intersectionalities: Multicultural and Multi-Faith Victorians Talk About Discrimination and Affirmation – bring to light some uncomfortable truths. Joining us in the studio tonight are the report co-researchers – Maria Pallotta-Chiarolli and Budi Sudarto from the Australian GLBTIQ Multicultural Council.
