  • Asia: Youth HIV Awareness Could Set Back HIV Response
For many of our listeners, HIV and its prevention messages would have formed part of their lives – either through a lived experience or the general sexual health education here in Australia. But in some countries, there is a whole generation of Young Men who have Sex with Men that have no experience with HIV, little awareness and poor access to support. Tonight we look at those aged 15-24 in Cambodia, Laos and Thailand where a perfect storm may be brewing.
APCOM – the Asia Pacific Coalition for Men’s Sexual Health – is a not-for-profit organisation working across 35 Asia-Pacific countries on HIV and other health issues of men who have sex with men. They released their latest Pulse Up! report looking at the views of young people in Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. Selvan Antony is their Monitoring and Evaluation Officer and Bright Thisanut is their Campaigns Officer. They joined us from Bangkok to speak about the report.

  • South Korea: Neglecting the Rights of LGBT Youth
School is meant to be a place of discovery. A place to learn about the world and your place in it. For many LGBT people it is a challenging time of life – where being a bit different can make you a target for others. In South Korea, discrimination against LGBT people can come from both students and teachers. Eight times the Korean parliament has attempted to pass an act that would outlaw discrimination on multiple grounds including sexual orientation. But each time it has come up against some powerful opposition.
A report from Human Rights Watch has placed this push for South Korea’s anti-discrimination laws in the spotlight. It tells of bullying, outing of children to parents and a void of support from teachers. We spoke to Ryan Thoreson, a researcher in the LGBT rights program at Human Rights Watch about the report titled – ‘I Thought of Myself as Defective’: Neglecting the Rights of LGBT Youth in South Korean Schools.

  • Burundi: A Rare Insight Into the Daily Life of LGBT People
In the heart of Africa is the small Republic of Burundi. After years of instability, civil war and trauma, the country is currently rebuilding. But there isn’t a place for LGBT people in the current or future state of Burundi. Homosexual acts are punishable by jail terms and there is little or no acceptance in the general community. Yet LGBT people do exist.
One brave LGBT person spoke to us from Burundi. To protect his identity, we have called him Eric – a very common name in Burundi, and we have altered his voice. He gives us a very rare insight into what LGBT people experience in daily life, how they get by and even how it is helping to build an LGBT family.

  • United Kingdom: Silenced Survivors
The #MeToo movement brought a much-needed spotlight to sexual violence, but less of that light has been shone on the male victims of rape and sexual assault. It is estimated that in the UK that annually 12,000 men are raped and 76,000 are sexually abused, whilst research from the USA found 1 in 6 men were likely to be victims of sexual assault. However, there was no research on its impacts within the LGBTIQA community.
SurvivorsUK is a UK based charity that provides specialist support to cis and trans men, boys, and non-binary people who have been raped, sexually assaulted or abused. The charity has recently conducted ground-breaking research looking into gay and bisexual men’s experiences of sexual violence in the UK. Tonight, we are joined by Meka Beresford and Sam Thomson from SurvivorsUK, who are co-authors of the report into the findings of that research.

  • United Kingdom: What Does Pride Mean Today?
Pride has always been about visibility. Whether it is to raise visibility in places where LGBT people are hidden or to celebrate the community to what it has become today, Pride is a global movement. In most cases Pride events were born out of protest. In some places it is now more of a party.
But at what point does profit become more important than Pride? There is a global counter-movement to “reclaim pride” from the commercial interests and bring it back to its grass-roots protest origins. And Manchester is the latest city where there is division over what Pride means today. John Proctor, organised a protest march at Manchester Pride in the UK to make his point.
