  • Afghanistan: Flee – The Story of a Child Refugee
Afghanistan does not have a very good history when it comes to LGBTIQ rights. Same-sex sexual activity can bring prison and even death sentences for people having been found guilty. And although no such sentences have been applied after the end of the Taliban ruling of the country in early 2000s, the return of the Taliban leaves LGBTIQ people with little hope for their future in Afghanistan.
Previously under Taliban rule, many LGBTIQ people fled the country, very often using people smugglers to reach a safe place and seek asylum. One of these stories is now coming to cinemas.
Jonas Poher Rasmussen is a director and writer. His latest documentary, Flee, an animated documentary, recounts the story of Amin, a child refugee from Afghanistan to Denmark. Flee is the story of a young man grappling with his traumatic past in order to find his true self and the meaning of home.

  • UK: Loving or Hating Peter Tatchell
Peter Tatchell has been a tireless activist for LGBT and human rights since the 1970’s. He is known for his particular brand of ‘direct action’. He has famously taken on the likes of Margaret Thatcher, Robert Mugabe, the Church and even Mike Tyson. His aggressive approach has made him many friends – and also many enemies.
Although he has been involved in over 3000 direct action protests, Melbourne born Peter Tatchell has never really had his own story told – until now. The new documentary – Hating Peter Tatchell – is directed by Sir Elton John with the likes of Stephen Fry and Sir Ian McKellen taking part.

  • Russia: We Will Become Better
Homophobia has long been rife in the Russia. The introduction of laws to limit the LGBT community have been brought in by President Vladimir Putin and are driving a kind of state-sanctioned attack. First it was the infamous Gay Propaganda law that uses protection of children to hide the blatant homophobia. More recently, the Russian state explicitly ruled out same-sex marriage through a constitutional amendment.
One phrase sums up life for LGBT people in Russia today – “You can be gay in Russia, but you can’t talk about it openly”. These words are from Andzej Gavriss, the Latvian director of the short film ‘We Will Become Better’. He joined us with a dancer from the film, Max Avdeev.

  • Palestine: Calling for Acceptance and Change Through Song
Palestine has been plagued with wars and conflict. Despite being recognised by the UN as a sovereign State with its capital being Jerusalem, the entirety of the Palestinian territory has been occupied by Israel since 1967. Nothing is easy in this country. And when you are different to what this conservative society sees as acceptable, that challenge reaches a whole new level.
Yet there is an openly queer voice leading the call for acceptance and change. Bashar Murad is a Palestinian singer, songwriter, and social activist based in East Jerusalem. His music talks societal norms, the Israeli Occupation, and LGBT+ rights in the Middle East. Murad’s music is rooted in social activism, and he used his music to overcome the pressure from growing up homosexual in an occupied territory.

  • Nigeria: Queer City Podcast
The largely conservative west African country of Nigeria is not a great place to be LGBT. Same-sex sexual activities are punishable by up to 14 years in prison. Acts of violence and blatant discrimination against LGBT people are rife. Between the mainly Muslim north and the Christian dominated south, there is little acceptance that LGBT people even exist. So how do you have visibility in such a challenging environment?
Timi decided that the stories of the queer community in Nigeria were remaining untold. He wanted a safe space where queer people could share their stories, their concerns and their hopes. So he created the Queer City Podcast as a way to connect local LGBT people and raise their profile in the broader community that queer people exist. And he has even bigger plans for the future of Nigeria’s rainbow community.
