World Wide Wave aims to promote awareness of international LGBT issues. Our program provides in-depth analysis and interviews. We focus on the challenges facing the global LGBT community as well as some of our successes.

We take pride in interviewing a wide range of international LGBT people and supporters including politicians, activists, academics, parents, authors, students, professionals and more.

Recently we spoke with The Victory Fund – a fundraising organisation dedicated to getting more LGBTIQ people elected to parliaments across the USA. As we learned about this fascinating organisation, we also mentioned that it would be great to speak with one of their success stories, tonight we are doing just that.

Erin Zwiener, Democratic Party representative and Member of the Texas House of Representatives in the USA. Erin is openly bisexual and one of the founding members of the first LGBTQ Caucus in Texas – a state that went narrowly to Donald Trump. Erin is also one of a wave of new LGBT representatives to be elected at the 2020 US elections.

Islam is often portrayed as a religion that is very intolerant towards LGBTIQ people. We have seen many examples of countries where homosexual relationships are outlawed, some with penalties that can go all the way to the death penalty, but it wasn’t always like that. Over the last few years, there have been some LGBTIQ Muslims taking the lead to offer inclusive spaces where being Muslim and LGBTIQ is possible.

One such person, is Imam Ludovic-Mohamed Zahed. Algerian born and now living in France, he became the world’s first gay Imam. We spoke to him 5 years ago and we were keen to hear how things had progressed. He now heads the CALEM Institute in Marseille, a training centre for progressive Imams and safe haven for at-risk LGBTIQ.

At first glance, you might think a country that decriminalised Homosexual acts in 1822 might be quite progressive, after all, it took until 1997 for every Australian state to have achieved this. But in the Caribbean country of Dominican Republic, nothing could be further from the truth. Like religion, LGBT discrimination is a part of daily life. But there is a concerted effort to make change.

Once person who has lived and loved Dominican Republic is Ana-Maurine Lara. Ana-Maurine authored the book Streetwalking: LGBTQ Lives and Protest in the Dominican Republic. Ana-Maurine was born in the Dominican Republic to a diplomat and a poet and is now both an activist and poet herself.

Do you ever think about the future? Do you dream big of an ideal world or focus on more achievable short-term hopes? Thinking about the future can be both liberating and daunting. Thinking about the future of LGBT rights is exactly what one English author dared to ask 35 leading minds, who shared their thoughts in a book just released.

The book is titled: We Can Do Better Than This: 35 Voices on the Future of LGBTQ+ Rights. Amelia Abraham challenged the contributors cast their minds forward to look at where LGBT rights need to move – from violence against Trans people or sex education in schools to LGBT mental health or the broad spectrum of gender.
