  • Radiothon Special: Our Most Amazing LGBTIQ+ Stories from Around the Globe
    It’s the World Wide Wave Radiothon special event featuring LGBTIQ+ stories from around the globe that you wouldn’t even know about if it wasn’t for JOY. Presenting this special event is the World Wide Wave team of Stephane, Alex, Shannon, Paul and Matt.
    We have amazing people joining us from around the world:

    * We cross to Europe to speak with Giorgi Tabagari from Tblisi Pride in Georgia;
    * We get the latest from the Pacific with Lana Woolf from Edge Effect;
    * Yangfa Leow from Singapore’s Oogachagga LGBT Counselling Service explains why they became a JOY organisational member;
    * We speak to other LGBT media outlets – Openly and Gaydio UK – on the value of rainbow, independent media;
    * Plus we hear from rights groups including Amnesty International and Kaleidoscope Australia about the difference having independent media like JOY makes.

    In the second half of our special extended Radiothon show, we bring you some of our favourite stories that we have covered on our nine years on air. From the challenging to the inspiring, from the painful to the hilarious, we bring you stories that no other radio station will:

    * Like Scotland’s unlikely duo that are making big changes in school;
    * Eurovision diva Maxxy Rainbow;
    * The emotional interview with the LGBT Centre in Orlando Florida, just after the Pulse Nightclub massacre;
    * We draw inspiration from New Zealand Olympian and world champion rower Emma Twigg;
    * We explore the intersection of Black Lives and Queer Lives matter;
    * A very brave LGBT rights activist in Uganda;
    * And our hilarious interview with a gay Jehovah’s Witness Survivor.

    Our World Wide Wave Radiothon special raised $2137 taking the JOY 94.9 Radiothon total over $170K.

  • USA: Trans in Trumpland
    It’s hard to believe that it is just over three months since President Donald Trump left office – and the world breathed a collective sigh of relief. His rollercoaster presidency was sometimes frustrating, other times entertaining – but always unpredictable. Some groups however we singled out for an ongoing attack right throughout President Trump’s four year term. One such group was the USA’s Trans community.
    Tony Zosherafatain began directing and producing films in 2012 after realizing that there weren’t many films focussed on Trans stories. As a Trans man, he knew what challenges invisibility brings. His latest documentary project – a series called Trans in Trumpland – took him into the US states with the worst transphobia under President Donald Trump, to try and find out what was driving this hate.

  • Angola: Homosexuality is Now Legal
    An ever shrinking number of countries across the world remain with laws that criminalise same-sex relations. Many of these laws come from colonial era times where the like of England and Portugal had global empires. While the empires have crumbled, the anti-sodomy laws often did not.
    The southern African nation of Angola has just updated its criminal code and homosexuality is now legal. It was not a quick or simple process, though all the campaigners agree that was worth fighting for. One organisation backing the change has been global rights organisation was Human Rights Watch, and we spoke with their Director of the LGBT Rights Program, Graeme Reid.

  • Honduras: Red Lesbica Cattrachas Fighting for the LGBT Community
    Nestled in Central America is the republic of Honduras. From turquoise waters and beachside resorts to rich agricultural country, it might be easy to miss the troubled past of this country. Drugs, wars, cyclonic destruction and poverty also form part of the Honduras story.
    For LGBT people, life in Honduras has never been easy but since 2009 it has steadily gotten worse. Astrid Ramos, lawyer at Red Lesbica Cattrachas, tell us how the murder of Vicki Hernandez on the very first day of the new regime set the tone for violent deaths to become a regular occurrence for the Honduras LGBT community – and those who commit these killings usually escape the consequences.

  • Hungary: Removing Rights From the LGBTI Community
    Once upon a time, there was a country in Europe that was trying to ban a book of fairy tales… because it included queer characters. And the big, bad Government made it impossible for people to get official documents in their required gender. This isn’t a story, it’s real life. And you might think I was talking about Russia or even Poland, but unfortunately this is all happening in one of their nearby neighbours of Hungary.
    Tonight, we speak with one of the organisations fighting these changes. We are joined by Luca Dudits, communication officer and one of the board directors of the Háttér Society, which was formed in 1995 and it is the largest and oldest LGBTI+ organisation in Hungary, providing support services and advocacy for the community there.
