  • Uganda: The Brave Voices for Change
The LGBTI community of Uganda is treated to some of the worst discrimination – both institutional and cultural – in the world. Anti-LGBTI laws are wide-ranging and include up to the death penalty. Newspapers regularly “out” people publicly against their will and violence is common.
Despite this, a small but brave group continue to advocate for LGBTI rights despite knowing this makes them a visible target for opposition. And they just might be making some inroads.
Dr. Frank Mugisha has been the most prominent voice for Uganda’s LGBT community for decades. Frank has won the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award and Thorolf Rafto Memorial Prize for his activism. As the Executive Director of Sexual Minorities Uganda, he has given a voice to many, who are unable to raise theirs, in a country where homosexuality is still outlawed.

  • Scotland: World Leading LGBTIQ-Inclusive Schools Program
A chance meeting at a protest for Scottish independence brought together two unlikely change-makers – a 19 year old gay university student who suffered homophobic bullying at school and a 36 year old straight truck driver and married father of one. The result is the most comprehensive anti-homophobia program to be taught in schools.
Jordan Daly and Liam Stevenson formed the Time for Inclusive Education (TIE) campaign in 2015 and this has grown into a fully-fledged charity with one aim: to combat homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in schools. The Scottish Government then announced that their LGBT-inclusive education would be implemented across all state schools to ensure that the Scottish education system is inclusive for everyone across the rainbow community. Hear their story from the self-confessed “cheeky buggers!”

  • China: The Changing Fortunes of the LGBTIQ Community
The Great Wall of China isn’t just a physical wall. Tight government controls and media censorship means it can be difficult to get information about what exactly is going on inside China. The LGBTIQ community, while not enjoying total freedom, has not been persecuted as in some other countries. But with the recent sudden cancellation of Shanghai Pride, could this be a sign of changes to come under the long rule of Xi Jinping?
Jean Chong is a long time LGBTIQ activist and Chairperson of the ASEAN SOGIE Caucus – a network of human rights activists across Southeast Asia. Jean has been watching the changes in China, particularly throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and brings us some insights on how the LGBTIQ community is holding up and what the future might bring.

  • Brazil – Resilience of the Trans Community
Brazil was once one of the most progressive countries for LGBTIQ rights in South America. But now it has the horrific title of the most dangerous nation in the world for Trans people. This year alone, more than 129 Trans people have been murdered.
To find out what changed, we spoke with Lua Da Mota Stabile – Director of Institutional and International Relations of the Libertarian Union of Travesti and Trans Women. Lua is a Brazilian trans feminist and activist who identifies as “Travesti” and transgender woman. She has been working and fighting for the human rights of LGBTI people since 2014. Her focus is on promoting and protecting the human rights of trans and gender-diverse people. Lua is also a consultant for the UN “Free and Equal” campaign.

  • Australia: Taking the Freeze off Women in Leadership
Across the world, the number of female leaders at the top of their industry, is dwarfed in comparison to male leaders. This trend is even more acute in the STEM arena – science, technology, engineering and mathematics. But how do you drive change? One innovative solution was to select a group of female future leaders working in science and send them off on a ship…to Antarctica.
This leadership experiment was also filmed. All the fears, hopes and raw emotion of the participants and the organisers has been captured in the upcoming documentary called – The Leadership. One participant who took part in this life changing experience is population health and immunity researcher Dr Sarah Charnaud. Melbourne resident – and a former World Wide Wave panelist – Sarah is currently in Switzerland and joined us to share her experience.
