  • US Election Special – Meet the First Trans Senator-Elect, Sarah McBride
Trans rights have taken a battering under President Donald Trump. But with the calling of the US election result for President-elect Joe Biden, expectations for improvements in LGBTI rights are high. That drive for change may be made a little easier with the election of the first transgender state senator in the US – Sarah McBride. Sarah won her race in the small US state of Delaware.
Senator-elect Sarah McBride is no stranger to advocacy, having served as the National Press Secretary for activist group, the Human Rights Campaign. She is an activist who came out as a Transgender woman while President of her university’s student body. She has worked inside politics, including as a White House intern during Barack Obama’s term, and continues to drive change for LGBTI Americans. She came into the JOY studios on a visit to Melbourne before she began her successful campaign.

  • United Kingdom: Homophobic and Transphobic Hate Crime
Across the UK, there has been an alarming increase in reported LGBTI hate crimes. With increases from 20% to 160% in different regions across the country. Even London has seen an increase of 55% over the past 5 years. But the scarier figure is that research suggest over 80% of people who experience LGBTIQ hate crime did not even report it to Police, meaning reported hate crime is massively understated.
Stonewall UK is the longest running LGBTIQ+ rights charity in Europe. Acclaimed actor and LGBT activist, Sir Ian McKellan, was one of its founders. Stonewall UK has been watching the increases in reported homophobic and transphobic hate crime and advocating for change. Josh Bradlow, Head of Policy at Stonewall UK, joined us from London to explain what is behind these increases.

  • World: Mapping a Path to Trans Rights
Since 2016, ILGA – the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association – has published the Trans Legal Mapping Report. The report gives a very detailed account of the impact of laws and policies on trans persons in 143 UN member States. The third edition of the report has recently been released.
Zhan Chiam, one of the co-authors of the report, spoke with us to unravel what is the difference between countries that progress on Trans rights and those that don’t. Zhan was the Coordinator of ILGA World’s Gender Identity and Expression Program, supporting and strengthening trans movements through ILGA’s membership base. Zhan is also on advisory committees for the Asia Pacific Transgender Network and Transgender Europe’s TvT project.

  • Serbia: Lesbian PM No Guarantee of Changes
Serbia has had a shady history with LGBTI rights showing moments of hope clouded by the pain of homophobia and attacks. But surprisingly in 2017, a lesbian became Prime Minister of Serbia – and she was re-elected this month. As Serbia pushes for entry to the European Union, we find out what is changing for the LGBTI community or if it is all just for looks.
Jelena Vasiljević is the Capacity Development Manager for E.R.A. – LGBTI Equal Rights Association. For over 15 years, Jelena has been dedicated to working on improving the position of LGBTI community with special focus on addressing lesbian and feminist issues.
