World Wide Wave

World Wide Wave has been on air at JOY for 8 years. That’s more than 400 shows covering some 160 countries. Some shows are about tragedy, others about triumph…and at the heart of each is the people of our incredibly diverse rainbow community. We ARE a community radio station. JOY 94.9 only remains on air with your support. You can help us survive and thrive in challenging times for queer media.

Helping us to bring you queer stories from across the globe is a charitable foundation committed to sharing human rights stories – Openly, part of the Thompson Reuters Foundation. We speak with journalist Rachel Savage from Openly about the current state and future of LGBTI media.

Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe. As a member of the EU, Hungary is a modern country and a democratic republic. Fidesz has been in power in Hungary since 2010 and is a national conservative party.

Since 2010, when Fidesz came into power, LGBTIQ rights have been eroded. On Transgender day of visibility, the Prime Minister proposed a bill eroding Trans rights even further. In this World Wide Wave podcast we are joined by Lucie Dudits, Háttér Society Communication Officer.

If you’ve been to Singapore before, you will know it as a clean, modern city state with great shopping! It even has a rainbow district with nightclubs and services for the LGBTI community and visitors. But many will be surprised that Singapore is still a country that criminalises male same-sex relations under the British colonial-era sodomy laws – Section 377A.

Singapore’s High Court has rejected the latest bid to rule this law unconstitutional and delivered a somewhat offensive ruling. To bring us up-to-date on how the court ruling has been received in Singapore’s LGBTI community, tonight we are joined by long-time friend of the show and proud JOY organisational member, Yangfa Leow from Oogachaga counselling service.
