  • Five Day Work Week - Is it a Fit for Your Business?

How many days is your work week? The typical work week for most people tends to be five days, Monday through Friday, but is that the right work week for you? Up until 1926, when Henry Ford implemented the five-day, 40-hour work week, people in factories were averaging 100-hour weeks! Now of course I don't think 100-hour work weeks are right for anybody, but sticking to the typical five-day work week may also not be suited for everybody. Figuring out whether or not the five-day work week is seeing where your business's efficiency and productivity are at it's best.

  • Legal Implications of Becoming a Boss with Ashley Herd

My friend and HR colleague, Ashley Herd, is back on the show! Ashley is the founder of Manager Method, which provides the tools to help managers and employees work better together. She has over a decade of experience in employment law, providing services to companies in litigation and advice to companies to help them avoid lawsuits.

Today we're diving into the legal implications that come with being a boss! If an employee is unhappy, they can actually sue you as a boss or manager. The implications can spill over into your life and become personal legal responsibilities. The ability of your employee to sue depends on federal law but also state and local laws.

The best thing you can do is think before you speak (or type!), and consider whether what you're about to share adds value or detracts. And remember: it's not just about avoiding legal issues, it's about building a relationship with your team so they feel valued and taken care of in the workplace.

  • Salary Transparency - What is it? How does it affect your business?

Pay transparency is making headlines recently and is becoming a requirement in many states and localities. It can be hard to understand what this means for your business. And despite what many think, it's more than just posting salary ranges on job postings. It really means that companies are transparent about the compensation they provide for their current and future employees.

Even if you aren't required by law to be transparent about salary, there are reasons you may want to. As with anything, you have to create a good process to determine how much you can afford to pay and how bonuses and pay increases will be handled so that everyone is on the same page.

  • Developing a Leadership Mindset with Zach Arend

Zach Arend is on the show with me today! He's a former 2x saddle bronc riding champion, devoted husband, dad to three girls, and a resonance coach for established and successful creative artists, makers, and “right-brained” business owners. He helps his clients slow down, trust their own process, and get what they need to be the best that they can be.

If you're a successful business owner or entrepreneur, you may find that the kind of work you're doing now is a lot different than when you started. You spend a lot more time on the business than you do in the business, and you may find it less enjoyable, or even wonder if this is something you want to do anymore. If you find yourself in this place, don't worry! You can still have a business you love working on and in!

  • Paid Time Off (PTO) - Deciding Between Unlimited vs Earned

Paid time off; also known as PTO, sick leave, or vacation days. It's time off that employees can take while still receiving their regular wages. There are a lot of ways you can structure PTO and it really depends on the size of your business and the industry you're in.

At the time of this episode, there are no federal requirements for paid time off but there are many different state and local requirements. If you are offering paid time off, the main thing you have to consider is whether you want to separate it into vacation time, which generally can be used for whatever employees choose, and sick leave, which usually requires a doctor's note.

I'm sharing a lot of options available to you when it comes to PTO! From unlimited, accruing, or earned paid time off and how to provide ample benefits to your employees while also protecting yourself from abused time off.

  • Scale Your Business - Hiring and Scaling Tips from Sharon Bondurant

I'm so impressed by the business today's guest has built and how long she's sustained this entrepreneurial journey. In this episode, Sharon Bondurant shares her leadership journey, provides a wealth of knowledge on recruiting and interviewing, and gives us an inside look at the process she's used to ensuring she finds the best candidates.

Sharon Bondurant is the multi-award-winning owner of Arizona’s leading tech and HR recruiting firm. Sharon is living proof that passion, persistence, and positivity pay off. Sharon started her business in 1998 when her firstborn son inspired her to launch the company from her bedroom floor with a FAX machine, a phone book, and a stack of index cards. Over the course of 20 years, she organically grew her firm to a twice-named Inc 5000 firm that has helped over 5000 people pivot to the work they love. The company has brought in over 40 million dollars to date and continues to be a white glove source in the recruiting world.

Over the last three years, she went through her own personal pivot by restructuring her business to create more flexibility for her and her team, starting a recruiter coaching business, becoming a real estate investor, finding love, and launching a podcast appropriately called "How to Pivot." Her podcast showcases inspiring entrepreneurs, interesting career ideas that may be worth a pivot, sprinkles of Sharon’s own personal pivot, the inside scoop on growing a recruiting firm, and lessons she’s learned from being a business trailblazer.

  • Benefit Open Enrollment - What the Heck is it?

It's that time of year! Open enrollment for insurance and benefits is in progress or coming up soon for many people. I'm going to be sharing some need-to-know info and some of the options I'm considering for myself this year.

Benefit renewal happens when you or your HR representative contacts your benefits broker to get updated plan and rate information. This only applies to medical and health insurance but it's a great time to update all of your benefit packages so that all updates can be released at the same time. Once you've picked your provider and plan(s), you go into open enrollment, the time your employees have to update their benefit choices.
