  • In The Trenches | Dedicated to Entrepreneurs [Episode 199, January 14, 2020]

“In the Trenches” – Piano Instrumental Music for Prayer, Meditation, Worship, and Reflection

“In The Trenches” is a special edition of my Worship Interludes Podcast. Featured as Episode #199, this episode is dedicated to entrepreneurs and business-building warriors all across the globe. I called this “In the Trenches” because that is how entrepreneurs are living each day – deep in the trenches of working hard, leading, creating, dreaming, and experiencing the highest of highs and sometimes, the lowest of lows.

I was recently interviewed as a guest on Jim Cockrum’s “Silent Sales Machine” podcast which is all about e-commerce entrepreneurs. He encouraged me to create one of my musical interludes as background music for prayers and affirmations over our fellow entrepreneurs and business owners. As a fellow e-commerce entrepreneur myself, I thought this was a great idea.

As I played and recorded this, I was praying and thinking about all of those entrepreneurs out there across the globe who are working hard to make a difference in the world and in their families. The Worship Interludes Podcast is available everywhere podcasts are available. It was created to be a peaceful, instrumental soundtrack for personal times of prayer, meditation, soaking worship, relaxation, and reflection.

Regardless if whether or not you may happen to be an entrepreneur or business owner, it’s my hope and prayer that these Worship Interlude Podcast episodes give you a resource to slow down and pray, meditate, rest, and reflect. I am confident that the prayers I’ve prayed in preparation for, and during recording of, these episodes will matter.

  • No Regrets | Piano Instrumental Interlude [Episode 198, January 9, 2019]

“No Regrets” Piano Improvisation for Prayer, Meditation, Soaking Worship, Focus, Relaxation

I am about to be brutally honest with you. There are days … or even weeks … when recording these instrumental interludes don’t come easily. Lately, it’s almost felt like a dead work. I even prayed and asked God if I should continue to produce them. The last thing I want to do is invest time, money, and energy into something God isn’t wanting me to do. All things have a season. Has the season for Worship Interludes come to a close?

I don’t think so. I know that this music reaches across the world and blesses those who listen. Although it’s not the type of music that elicits a response from the listener, I do receive emails or messages from time to time that encourage me to keep on.

When we hit the wall and feel like caving in and giving up we have to remember our “why” and our “purpose”. Why am I doing this? What purpose is it accomplishing? Finally, once I press through the resistance, how do I feel?

I can tell you exactly how I feel.

    No regrets.

    That’s right. No. Regrets.

Despite feeling unmotivated, tired, uncreative, and restless, I never walk away from recording an interlude with a sense of regret. Instead, I feel a sense of accomplishment, peace, and satisfaction.

It’s the exact same feeling I have when I push through the mental warfare that wants to keep me in the warm bed on a morning like today when I’m supposed to meet my buddies for our morning exercise workouts. It was 38 degrees this morning. The leader of today’s workout is notorious for integrating a lot of running into his workouts. None of that appealed to me. Yet, I pushed through the resistance and joined my brothers in the cold darkness for 45 minutes of heart-racing, muscle-challenging fitness.

When I jumped into my truck to come home at 6:30 this morning, guess what I felt …

    No regrests.

    That’s right. No. Regrets.

Do you know, it’s the same way when we pull aside and spend time in prayer, meditation, worship, or reflection. Honestly, have you EVER taken time for these spiritual disciplines and regretted it? Hasn’t it almost aways been fruitful for you?

Today’s interlude is just over ten minutes long. I love to challenge myself to invest ten minutes into my time of prayer and meditation. Ten minutes. It’s not too long. It’s so obtainable. You can do this.

Listen. Pray. Reflect. When your mind is distracted, push through to the end of this piece. I feel very confident that once the last note fades, you will feel NO REGRETS.

Grace and peace to you all,Fred McKinnon, Pianist/Composer

  • New Beginnings – New Year [Episode 197, January 7, 2020]

“New Beginnings” – Piano Instrumental for New Years, Reflection, Prayer, Journaling, Meditation

Welcome to Episode #197 of the Worship Interludes Podcast, the first episode of 2020. I’ve called today’s episode “New Beginnings”. My idea behind this keyboard improvisation was to provide a soundtrack for you to start your new year. I love January and the the beginning of the new year. I fully understand that most people don’t keep their resolutions. I’m guilty of that as well. However, there is something powerful about setting new resolutions, goals, and ideas. I love to chase those dreams.

This interlude is around 8:30 minutes. It gives you just enough time to be still and think about the year ahead. I’d encourage you to grab a piece of paper or a journal and write down the thoughts that come to you as you listen.

What do you feel? What do you hear? What do you see?

As you prayerfully consider the year ahead, what goals do you have?

My Tuesday morning routine got shaken up this year and because of that I felt a bit rushed in recording the interlude this morning. After I finished I went for a walk and as I was praying, I asked the Father, God, to bless the music. I don’t feel like it’s my best, but I know God can use it to touch others. I hope that it will be a blessing to you as you listen.

Let’s grow together in 2020 – in times of solitude, prayer, meditation, and rest.

Also, I will mention this in another post, but in December, this podcast passed ONE MILLION downloads. That’s a huge milestone and I’m super grateful to all of you who subscribe and listen.

  • Looking Back | Piano Interlude [Episode 196, December 31, 2019]

Looking Back – Solo Piano Improvisation by Fred McKinnon

In case you haven’t noticed, I took a little break during the last few weeks of December from producing the podcast. Life was crazy – I was in the middle of moving into a new office, we were busy with holiday activities, and then just as I was getting settled my home studio became ground zero for the flu. My youngest child, Andrew, got sick and this little office/studio was his isolation room. He was setup with a comfy couch, iPad, phone, and my computer so he could watch TV, rest, etc. The last place I wanted to spend time was in that room.

Although disappointed that I didn’t hit the 200th episode this year, it’s right around the corner.

I’m recording this on New Years Eve, 2019. The interlude is called “Looking Back” and is meant to be a peaceful piano improvisation to listen to as you reflect on the past year.

Take a listen, breathe slowly, and reflect on your year. Acknowledge the victories and failures. Pray and receive direction for the coming year and express gratitude for 2019.

I’m so grateful and honored that you’ve taken this journey with me. In 2020, Lord willing, we will reach over one million downloads of this podcast all over the world.

May God bless you and prosper you this coming year.

    Grace and peace,Fred

  • In The Quiet | Peaceful Piano Music [Episode 195, December 10, 2019]

“In the Quiet” – Piano Instrumental Improvisation by Fred McKinnon for Prayer, Meditation, Soaking Worship, Relaxation

The past couple of days I’ve felt rushed in the mornings. This is mostly the result of my skipping my normal morning routine and sleeping a little later. A lot has been going on and the extra sleep has been helpful for me. This morning, I slept in a little later (6:15 AM instead of 5:00 AM!) and felt the same sense of being rushed. I had my morning devotional time with my daily Bible reading plan and then was thinking of all the many things I needed to get done today.

It’s Tuesday morning, and this is the day I usually record the first interlude of the week for this Worship Interludes Podcast. I sat down and found the blend of piano and synth pads that I liked and started to play. After the first few extended notes, I paused and prayed a prayer that was something like this:

I don’t want this to be just myself playing another interlude. I don’t want to rush through this just to get it done . Holy Spirit, come and breathe life into these notes. Anoint my hands and fingers and guide me as I play. Help me to worship and let Your Presence be felt by those who listen to these notes. Fill these spaces with praise and prayer.

That’s my hope for every single interlude. I want to know that people are being touched. There are millions, or perhaps, billions of pianists in this world. The music I play is not complex or difficult. It could easily be reproduced by even the novice pianist. What I hope is different is that a tangible, anointing from God rests on the sound and carries over to those who listen.

May you have an incredibly blessed day and week.

  • The Wonder | Piano Instrumental Interlude [Episode 194, December 7, 2019]

“The Wonder” – Piano Instrumental Improvisation by Fred McKinnon

Today’s interlude is called “The Wonder”. As this piece was improvised this morning I found myself meditating on the bigness and amazing wonder of God Almighty. I was imagining just how awesome and magnificent He is.

This piece is quite lyrical with a repeating, sweet melody. It’s one of those mornings where I finished recording and sat back in my chair with a satisfied feeling. I felt a sense of peace and purpose. Recording this interlude was one of the first things I did today and it was a great start to my day.

Yesterday I received some statistics about this podcast as it relates to listeners on Spotify. Over 80,000 people listened to this podcast more than 600,000 times so far this year. Over 17,000 people listen to this podcast more than any other.

I’m amazed by those statistics. I’m also humbled and equally grateful. It’s my hope that the music is bringing peace and comfort to all who listen.

Thank you for your amazing support of my music.

  • Satisfy My Soul | Piano Instrumental [Episode 193, December 3, 2019]

“Satisfy My Soul” – Piano Instrumental Improvisation for Prayer, Meditation, Soaking Worship, and Relaxation

My daily devotion includes a plan to guide me through reading the Bible. That plan currently has me reading Ecclesiastes. One of the hallmarks of this biblical book written by King Solomon is his observations of life.

One of the thinks that King Solomon discusses is the vanity of having so many things or working so hard, yet not being satisfied in our souls. Just as it was true thousands of years ago, we can have so many material things in our lives and still be deeply dissatisfied deep in our souls.

Today’s piano improvisation is a return to the sound of the ethereal piano with background synth pads. It is slow, intentional, and has plenty of space to allow yourself to pause (selah) and pray, rest, and reflect.

My hope is that you will discover those things that truly bring joy and satisfaction to your soul. Invest in these things. Be intentional about these things. It is my personal belief that we will never be satisfied in our souls as long as we are separated from our Creator. Confess your sins and allow your heart to be reconciled to Father God. Allow His Spirit to flood your soul with peace and satisfaction.

Thank you so much for listening.

  • The Blessings | Piano Instrumental Music [Episode 192, November 26, 2019]

“The Blessing” – Solo Piano Instrumental Music for Prayer, Meditation, Soaking Worship, Relaxation, Rest

This solo piano improvisation is one of my shorter interludes. I’ve been meditating this week on all of the blessings I’ve experienced in my life over the past year. It’s the week of Thanksgiving and I’ve been intentional in expressing gratitude. It’s so easy to get caught up in the cares of life that we forget to pause and reflect on all of the blessings we have experienced.

I loved the simple, sweet melody that came forth on this track. It’s one of these spontaneous interludes that I will probably revisit and develop into a stand-alone solo piano composition in the future.

As you listen, I’d love to encourage you to intentionally meditate on the blessings in your life. In many cases they will involve others. Reach out to them and express your gratitude to them. You never know how much this might encourage those you love.

  • Peaceful Moments | Piano Instrumental Music [Episode 191, November 19, 2019]

“Peaceful Moments” – Piano Instrumental Improvisation for Soaking Worship, Prayer Music, Meditation, and Relaxation

I usually record the first interlude of the week every Tuesday morning. This Tuesday started out at 5:00 AM when my alarm went off so that I could attend my Tuesday morning outdoor workout with a group of men. It was a crisp 48 degrees and I had a great workout. On the way back home I grabbed a cup of coffee and parked down at Village Creek Landing, one of my favorite spots on the island to have my own personal quiet time. During my time of prayer and worship I watched the sun rise over the marsh. The featured image on today’s episode was taken from my little spot there at the landing.

I normally don’t drive my kids to school on Tuesday mornings so by the time I got home from the school run and took my walk with Sadie, it was already past 9:00 AM. I have so much work to do. I’m in the e-commerce business and it’s crunch time. Stopping, slowing down, and creating an interlude at this point was going to be a struggle. They come much easier when it’s the first thing I do in the mornings.

As I began to play, I felt myself wanting to rush. As I would play each chord, I kept saying to myself internally, “Fred, just slow down. Breathe. Relax”. The combination of a couple of huge cups of coffee and my exhaustive list of work that needs to be done were driving my soul in a frenzy. It was all I could do to hit the brakes.

But I tapped the brakes of my soul and slowly began to calm down. I realized that I could rush through this interlude, or I could slow down and be intentional. Soak in every moment. Let the tones from the piano resonate and fill the spaces.

As I finished, I felt more calm. Relaxed. I felt more at peace.

That’s what these interludes are about. They are intended to give the listener (and the performer!) a space to be still, slow down, pray, listen, and relax. These interludes are an escape from the fast-paced, hectic schedules of life.

I hope that you enjoy listening today. I’m grateful for your support.
