  • The Inheritance Nobody Wants

It's been over a year since my mother passed, and we are still dealing with the aftermath — attics and garages full of junk, no will, no passwords, no plan. My parents didn't put their affairs in order, and that decision has cost my family a year of stress, conflict, and heavy obligation neither of us asked for.

Swedish Death Cleaning book - https://amzlink.to/az078uWYqo2hF (affiliate link)

In this video I talk honestly about what it's actually like to inherit a lifetime of someone else's stuff with no guidance — the guilt of throwing things away, the burden of "heirlooms" nobody wanted, and how being co-trustees with a sibling can either hold a family together or tear it apart. I also get into how growing up without money shaped my own relationship with possessions, and why Mrs. W and I have gone scorched earth on our own clutter since going through this.

If your parents haven't gotten their affairs in order, or you're dealing with this exact situation right now, I hope this gives you the push to have that hard conversation before it's too late.

  • I Turned My Truck Into a Wildland Fire Engine

A QTAC 125HP fire skid unit showed up at the homestead, and by the end of the day it was mounted in the back of my truck, pulling water straight out of the irrigation ditch. In this video I install the nozzle, load the unit with the skid steer, fuel it up, run the Honda GX200 engine through a break-in heat cycle, and head down to the water source to test how well it pulls a draft with the hard suction line.

I also cover why hard suction is different from a regular hose, how a foot valve keeps the pump primed, the 33.9 ft theoretical draft limit (and what's actually achievable in the real world), and why I always change the oil on a brand-new small engine after the first heat cycle.

If you live in a wildland-urban interface and want the ability to defend your own property with an unlimited water supply — river, pond, ditch, whatever you've got — this is one of the best tools you can add to your setup.

  • I Lost 55 Pounds. Now They Say I'm Anorexic

18 months ago I was 220+ lbs, high body fat, ashamed to take my shirt off in public. Today I'm sitting at 165 lbs, and the reaction online has shifted from indifference to accusations — "you have an eating disorder," "you're not healthy," "you're anorexic."

In this video I talk about what actually changed: calorie deficit, walking 5-6 miles a day, tracking everything I eat, and 18 months of discipline — not medication, not extremes. I also get into why our sense of what a "normal" body looks like is skewed when a majority of the country is overweight, and why I think physical health is going to matter more than ever in the years ahead.

This isn't about telling anyone else what to do with their body. It's about my own experience, and why I don't think what I've done is unhealthy.

  • Split Firewood With the King of Splitting Axes

Somewhere deep in the PNW mountains — location undisclosed — the War Band met up to cut firewood from windfall timber on public land. This trip had everything: burnt second-growth Doug fir with beautiful straight grain, a good haul with the crew, and me finally getting the hang of the flick/flip splitting method with the Bucking Special.

I don't reach for the hydraulic splitter nearly as much anymore — once you get this method right, you get a full split on every swing instead of pounding away at it. There's a learning curve, but this axe is built for it. By the end of the day we had about 2 to 2.5 days' worth of firewood split and ready to go.

Good crew, good wood, good day in the mountains.

  • I Bought the New Version. I Hated It

I recently picked up a pair of top-of-the-line Pro Mark steel chainsaw chaps — and I don't like them. Too long, too thick, too many buckles, and the redesigned thigh pocket is a mess. So instead of keeping the new pair, I broke out the sewing kit and repaired my old, worn-out ones to get another fire season out of them.

In this video I walk through the full repair: replacing torn webbing straps, swapping in new buckles, hand-stitching heavy-duty synthetic thread made for denim, and getting my favorite chaps back in action — better than before. If you've ever had a piece of gear get "upgraded" into something worse, or you're just curious about basic repair sewing, this one's for you.

  • I Solved My Tractor's Biggest Problem

If you own a farm tractor, you know the problem: there's no good way to carry a chainsaw. Toss it in the front bucket and it gets beat up, plus you lose use of your bucket. In this video I install a full quick-attach chainsaw mount system from ITC — saw sleeve, tool basket, and all — onto my Yanmar, and it completely solves the problem.

I walk through mounting the universal bracket, fitting the quick-attach saw module, testing clearance around the cab and blinker, and building out the tool basket to carry everything — chaps, gloves, extra chains, wedges, fuel, bar oil, and a faller's belt with an IFAK. This thing holds everything I need and keeps it safe, secure, and out of the way.

I'm also working with ITC on a version of this built for mini excavators and skid steers — more on that soon.

  • This is a Warning To Men

I hated working with my father. He was impatient, quick to anger, and impossible to please — and I promised myself I'd never put my own kids through that. Then one day, building a bridge with my son Jack, I realized I'd become exactly what I swore I never would.

This is a personal one. I talk about what happened during that project, the moment it finally broke something open in me, and what I did afterward to try to rebuild what I'd almost lost with my son. If you're a father wrestling with your own patience, expectations, or the patterns you grew up with, I think this one's for you.
