  • I Fixed My Dying Homestead With a 100-Year-Out Trick

    Parts of my pasture were dying — dry, dusty, covered in dandelions — while other spots were thriving with clover. The problem wasn't a lack of water, it was where the water was actually going.

    In this video I break out an old single-bottom plow, borrowed from my neighbor, and use it to cut irrigation furrows by hand — a flood irrigation method that's been used on farms for generations, long before center pivots took over. I walk through how I read the land (clover means too much water, dandelions mean too little), how I redirected the ditch water with headgates, and how a full day of cutting furrows changed the flow across the whole property.

    This isn't a perfect system, and I'm still learning as I go — but 24 hours after opening the water, you can already see the difference.

  • It's Worse Than We Thought

    Day 3 helping Greg and his family clean up after the Grasshopper Fire — and this time we found something we weren't expecting. The wildfire got hot enough to compromise the concrete foundation itself, a process called spalling, meaning even the slab has to be torn out and repoured before they can rebuild.

    We had great volunteers out today — Brandon brought his excavator and fell all the dead ponderosa snags, Sean and Lars worked a mini excavator bucking and skidding firewood. Between the crew, we cleared the foundation, bunched up debris, and got one step closer to Greg having a slab ready for his new home.

    When Greg's family lost everything in the Grasshopper Fire, the fire made a 4-mile run to their home in under 40 minutes. Two houses, two travel trailers, a fifth wheel, a barn, and a shop — gone before anyone had time to think.
