NBA – Suns’ Durant out with ankle injury, re-evaluated in 3 weeks
The Phoenix Suns say Kevin Durant has a left ankle sprain after slipping on the floor during pregame warmups on Wednesday and will be re-evaluated in three weeks. The hope was the 34-year-old wouldn’t miss much time because of the unlucky mishap, but now it appears he’ll be out until April. If that’s the case, the Suns will have just five more games until the playoffs start. Durant has played in just three games — all on the road — since the blockbuster deal in February that sent Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Jae Crowder, four first-round picks and other draft compensation to the Brooklyn Nets.

The TPC Sawgrass is one of the most unpredictable courses in golf. And it got a most unpredictable leaderboard after one round of The Players Championship. The leader is Chad Ramey, who had never see the Stadium Course until this week. He shot a bogey-free 64 and leads by one over Collin Morikawa. Hayden Buckley delivered the first ace of the tournament on the island-green 17th. Aaron Wise made a 10 on the closing hole with three straight tee shots into the water. Rory McIlroy had a 76. That’s his worst score in more than a year.
Soccer – Split verdict for ex-Fox execs in soccer rights bribe case
A former Fox executive has been convicted of paying tens of millions of dollars in bribes to nab broadcasting rights to the World Cup and other top soccer matches. A second ex-executive was acquitted. A Brooklyn federal jury delivered its verdict Thursday. Hernan Lopez was convicted. Carlos Martinez was acquitted. Prosecutors have said the case bared the corruption of international soccer. Defense lawyers say the former Fox execs were framed by an admitted criminal who was trying to minimize his own punishment. New York-based Fox Corp. wasn’t charged in the case and has denied any involvement in the bribery scandal.

Jim Boeheim enrolled at Syracuse in 1962. Played there until 1966. Started coaching there in 1969. Took over the program as head coach in 1976. Put simply, he was Syracuse basketball. Until now.
The Basketball Hall of Famer’s 47-year tenure as coach at Syracuse came to an awkward end on Wednesday, with the university saying Orange associate head coach and former Syracuse player Adrian Autry has been promoted to the job. The Orange moved quickly, making the announcement less than three hours after Syracuse lost to Wake Forest in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.

NFL – Analysis: Daniel Jones’ new contract raises standard for QBs
Daniel Jones turned one decent season into a mega-money contract that raises the standard in the NFL. Once the New York Giants gave Jones a deal worth $160 million over four years — $82 million is reportedly guaranteed for the first two seasons — the price tag went up for quarterbacks around the league. Way up. If Jones can join Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and six others in the $40 million-per-year club after a breakout season in which he threw just 15 touchdown passes and ran for seven more, how much money will more accomplished QBs get paid?
WNBA – Griner’s return to WNBA tips off ESPN coverage
Brittney Griner’s return to the WNBA will tip off ESPN’s coverage of the league’s 27th season when the Phoenix Mercury visit the Los Angeles Sparks on May 19 — opening night. Griner missed all of last season after being arrested at an airport just outside of Moscow on drug possession charges in February 2022. She was brought home in a dramatic high-level prisoner exchange in December. The Mercury’s home opener two days after the opener will also be broadcast nationally as one of 25 regular-season games that ESPN will show on ABC, ESPN or ESPN2. The New York Liberty, who added former MVPs Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart, as well as Courtney Vandersloot, this offseason will be on national television nine times. Defending champion Las Vegas will appear seven times.
Olympics – Canadian Olympians push for opposition to Russians in Paris
A group of 42 retired Canadian Olympians are urging their country’s Olympic leaders to take a stand against Russians participating in next year’s Paris Games. In a statement, the Olympians argue that refusing Russian participation is not simply a matter of denying them a chance to compete because of their passport, it is also a rejection of the war and a recognition of the role sports plays in geopolitics. Signing the statement was a who’s-who of Canadian Olympic greats and gold medalists, including Hayley Wickenheiser, Jenn Heil, Alex Bilodeau and Beckie Scott. Russian and Belarusian athletes have been largely excluded from international competition since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last February. The IOC is seeking a pathway back for those athletes.
Golf – LIV – LIV Golf effect noticeable as ever at Players Championship
There’s no escaping the division caused by LIV Golf, even at The Players Championship. The defending champion is not at TPC Sawgrass for the first time in nearly a decade. That would be Cameron Smith of Australia, who lives down the street. He joined LIV Golf and the PGA Tour suspended him. The runner-up and third-place finisher at the PGA Tour’s premier tournament also are now with LIV Golf. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan says it’s a little awkward, but players knew what they were signing up for. The field still is the strongest of the year. And the Stadium Course remains as unpredictable as ever.
Golf – Tiger Woods’ girlfriend seeks to nullify NDA with pro golfer
Tiger Woods’ girlfriend wants to nullify a nondisclosure agreement following a six-year relationship with the professional golfer. Court records show that Erica Herman filed a complaint seeking declaratory judgment on Monday in Martin County, Florida. The couple had been living together in the area just north of Palm Beach County. Woods and Herman haven’t publicly announced the end of their relationship, which began in 2017. According to the complaint, a trust controlled by Woods is attempting to silence Herman with a nondisclosure agreement she signed while working as an employee of Woods. The complaint argues that the NDA should be nullified under a federal law that prohibits an NDA from being enforced when sexual assault or sexual harassment is involved.

Damian Lillard had 31 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists, securing his second triple-double of the season before the end of the third quarter, and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Detroit Pistons 110-104. The dynamic guard scored 16 points in the first quarter to give the Trail Blazers a 31-18 lead, and they had little trouble keeping a comfortable margin against a banged-up and slumping team for most of the night. Detroit pulled within six points with 1:39 left to fire up the previously quiet fans, and Jerami Grant quieted them with a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession. Grant finished with 26 points against his former team. Former Kalamazoo Central and University of Michigan player Isaiah Livers matched a career high with 17 points for the Pistons, who have lost a season-high eight straight games. The Pistons were without injured starters Bojan Bogdanovic, Isaiah Stewart and rookie center Jalen Duran, along with key reserve Killian Hayes.

Boston Red Sox infielder Justin Turner needed 16 stitches after he was hit in the face by a pitch during a spring training game against the Detroit Tigers. Turner’s wife, Kourtney, posted to Instagram that the infielder had “16 stitches and a lot of swelling but we are thanking God for no fractures & clear scans.”
MLB – MLB shift limits raising batter spirits and averages so far
Major League Baseball’s new limits on infield shifts are raising batter spirits this spring. They might be bosltering batting averages, too. Batting averages across the league are up slightly from last spring training, from .259 to .263. Left-handed hitters seem to be benefitting most, with their collected average up from .255 to .274. Sluggers like the New York Yankees’ Anthony Rizzo are enjoying taking at-bats without a wall of defenders in shallow right field. Rizzo says that “young left-handed hitters will be introduced to the 3-4 hole that’s been gone for about seven to eight years.”
NFL – Ex-Raider Derek Carr agrees to 4-year contract with Saints
The New Orleans Saints say former Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has agreed to a four-year contract. A person familiar with the situation said the deal could be worth up to $150 million. The person spoke to The Associated Press about the contract’s value on condition of anonymity because financial terms were not released. Carr turns 32 this month. He played nine seasons for the Raiders and holds team records for yards and touchdowns passing. Saints coach Dennis Allen was the Raiders’ coach when the team selected Carr in the second round of the 2014 draft. Las Vegas released Carr on Feb. 14 to avoid guaranteeing him $40.4 million of his contract over the next two years.
NFL – Ex-Raider Ruggs’ felony DUI case stalled by fight over judge
A Nevada judge will again be asked to decide which justice of the peace should handle a preliminary hearing in the case against former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III, who is accused of killing a woman in drunken car crash in 2021. Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Harmony Letizia told Ruggs and his attorneys on Monday that she lacks the authority to decide whether she or another judge should preside over the hearing to decide if there is enough evidence to warrant that Ruggs stand trial on charges of reckless driving and driving under the influence causing death. Ruggs’ attorneys said they will again take the issue to Clark County District Court.
NFL – NFL reinstates Jaguars WR Ridley after gambling suspension
The NFL reinstated suspended receiver Calvin Ridley and cleared the way for him to join his new team in Jacksonville. The league says Ridley is eligible to participate in all team activities beginning immediately. He had been suspended indefinitely since March 2022 for violating the NFL’s gambling policy. He is expected to join the Jaguars for offseason workouts beginning April 17. The Jaguars traded a fifth-round pick in 2023 and a conditional fourth-rounder in 2024 to get Ridley from Atlanta at the trading deadline in November.

Tyrese Haliburton scored 29 points, including a 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds left, to give the Indiana Pacers a 125-122 victory Sunday over the Chicago Bulls. Haliburton’s game-winning shot occurred after Zach LaVine missed a free throw that would have given the Bulls the lead with 22.6 second left. LaVine, who scored a game-high 42 points, was fouled on a 3-point attempt by Bennedict Mathurin and converted the first two free throw tries. After Haliburton’s 3-pointer, a game-tying shot attempt by Nikola Vucevic bounced off the rim. Mathurin added 17 points for the Pacers (29-36), while DeMar DeRozan scored 23 for the Bulls.

MLB – MLB says Clevinger won’t face discipline in investigation
Major League Baseball says it won’t impose any discipline against Chicago White Sox right-hander Mike Clevinger after completing an investigation of domestic abuse allegations. In a statement, the commissioner’s office says its investigation included interviews of more than 15 people, including Clevinger and a woman who said she is the mother of Clevinger’s child, as well as thousands of electronic communications and other documents. Clevinger has voluntarily agreed to submit to evaluations by the joint treatment boards under the CBA and to follow any recommendations.
Tennis – Djokovic withdraws after failed bid to play Indian Wells
Top-ranked Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the upcoming BNP Paribas Open after losing his bid to enter the United States unvaccinated to play in the Southern California event. Play in the combined ATP-WTA event begins Wednesday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden and runs through March 19. Djokovic had requested a vaccine waiver to enter the U.S., but Homeland Security denied it. EPL – Biggest loss in 90 years for Man U in 7-0 rout at Liverpool
Liverpool has brought Manchester United crashing down to earth with a stunning 7-0 rout in the Premier League at Anfield. It was United’s worst competitive defeat in more than 90 years. Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah struck twice and Roberto Firmino scored the other with six of the goals coming in an explosive second-half performance. The score also eclipsed Liverpool’s previous best victory against United, which was a 7-1 win in 1895.
