Tim Stutzle scored on a penalty shot in the first period and had two assists, and Austin Watson scored twice as the Ottawa Senators beat Detroit 6-1 and completed a two-game sweep of the Red Wings. Claude Giroux, Alex DeBrincat and Brady Tkachuk also scored for Ottawa. Mads Sogaard stopped 16 shots. With their four-goal outburst in the first period, the Senators are the first team in NHL regular-season history to score a power-play goal, a short-handed goal, an even-strength goal and a penalty shot goal in a period. Dominik Kubalik scored for the Red Wings. Ville Husso made 21 saves.
Coyotes 4, Blackhawks 1 – Vejmelka, Coyotes beat Blackhawks 4-1 after Kane trade
Nick Schmaltz had a goal and an assist, Karel Vejmelka stopped 23 shots and the Arizona Coyotes beat the Patrick Kane-less Chicago Blackhawks 4-1. The Blackhawks came out flat after their star player was traded to the New York Rangers in a three-way deal that included Arizona earlier in the day. The Coyotes took advantage with first-period goals by Travis Boyd and Barrett Hayton. Jack McBain scored in the second and Vejmelka was sharp after allowing six goals in a loss to Calgary his last start. Andreas Athanasiou scored late in the third period and Alex Stalock allowed four goals on 33 shots for Chicago.
NHL – Rangers acquire star winger Patrick Kane from Blackhawks
The New York Rangers have acquired Patrick Kane in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks. The Rangers sent a conditional second-round draft pick and a future fourth-rounder to Chicago and a third-rounder in 2025 to Arizona to complete the deal. Kane joins the Rangers after waiving his no-movement clause to leave the only NHL organization he has played for. The 34-year-old won the Stanley Cup three times with the Blackhawks and was playoff MVP in 2013. Getting Kane is the latest big move by New York in the team’s pursuit of its first championship since 1994.

NFL – Bears hire Luke Steckel as assistant offensive line coach
The Chicago Bears have hired longtime Tennessee Titans assistant Luke Steckel as assistant offensive line coach. Steckel spent the past two seasons as the Titans tight ends coach and had served in a variety of roles on their staff after being hired in 2013. The move comes three weeks after Tennessee announced he was moving to run game analyst, with Tony Dews switching from coaching running backs to tight ends. Steckel interviewed for the Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator opening, but that job went to Kellen Moore last month.
NCAAFB – NCAA football panel out to shorten games; player safety goal
College football administrators are looking at ways to reduce the number of plays in games in the name of player safety. A tweak in clock operating procedures is likely the first step. The NCAA Football Rules Committee is meeting in Indianapolis this week and recommendations it forwards and approved in the spring would take effect next season. The average number of plays per game in the Bowl Subdivision has hovered at 180 the past three seasons. NFL games average 154. The NCAA rules committee is looking at keeping the clock moving when a team makes a first down.

NHL – Maple Leafs up ante in East by making trade with Blackhawks
The Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired forward Sam Lafferty and defenseman Jake McCabe from the Chicago Blackhawks. Their latest big trade comes the day after division-rival Tampa Bay paid a hefty price to acquire forward Tanner Jeannot from Nashville. Talent continues to flow to Eastern Conference contenders ahead of the NHL trade deadline Friday. In recent days, New Jersey got big winger Timo Meier from San Jose and Boston traded with Washington for Garnet Hathaway and Dmitry Orlov. Toronto sent a conditional 2025 first-round pick, a second-rounder in 2026, prospect Pavel Gogolev and forward Joey Anderson to the Blackhawks for Lafferty, McCabe and conditional fifth-round picks in 2024 and ‘25. Chicago is retaining half of McCabe’s salary. Dubas, in his fifth season as Leafs general manager, said talks with Chicago counterpart Kyle Davidson predated trades by the Lightning and Bruins, but isn’t downplaying the value of keeping up knowing how difficult the first couple of rounds will be this spring.

Miles, who leads the Irish in several categories, was hurt with 2:35 remaining before halftime Sunday while diving for a loose ball. A handful of big moves already have been made well ahead of the NHL trade deadline. Plenty more are expected before Friday at 3 p.m. Eastern. Patrick Kane going from Chicago to the New York Rangers is the most highly anticipated deal on the docket. Aside from that, there is plenty of uncertainty and additional big-name players who could change places. Sunday alone brought Timo Meier getting traded from San Jose to New Jersey, Tanner Jeannot going from Nashville to Tampa Bay and Ivan Barbashev from St. Louis to Vegas. In the next few days, Arizona’s Jakob Chychrun is likely to be traded, too.

Golf – PGA – Chris Kirk, after 8-year wait, wins the Honda Classic
Chris Kirk waited nearly eight years to win a PGA Tour event again. Waiting one more hole on Sunday was no problem. Kirk stuck his approach to the par-5 18th to tap-in range, and his birdie on the first hole of a playoff lifted him past Eric Cole for the victory at the Honda Classic on Sunday. Cole had a chance, playing his third shot from the sand to just outside of 10 feet for a birdie that would have extended the playoff. But it lipped out, and Kirk nudged his ball in for his fifth career win.
Golf – LIV – Charles Howell III with 63 wins in Mexico for 1st LIV title
Charles Howell III has won the LIV Golf opener in Mexico. This one finally felt easy. Howell shot a 63 in the final round at Mayakoba thanks to a hot putter. He wound up winning by four shots over Peter Uihlein. Howell picked up $4 million for the individual title and an additional $1 million for leading his team Crushers to a nine-shot win. Uihlein was still in range of Howell until the 12th hole. Uihlein had to hit three tee shots. Only two of them counted but it added to a triple bogey. He battled back for a 68.

Busch held off Chase Elliott and Ross Chastain in NASCAR’s final race on the gloriously weathered asphalt at Auto Club Speedway, which will soon be demolished to make room for a half-mile track. MLB – MLB’s bigger bases could lead to more steals, fewer injuries
Major League Baseball is introducing bigger bases this season as part of a flurry of changes designed to put more action and athleticism back in the game. The bases are expanding from 15-inch squares to 18 inches, which cuts down the distance between them by 4 1/2 inches. The distance between third and home and home and first was trimmed by 3 inches. With the new bases, major league teams could try a more aggressive approach on the basepaths. The bases also could help prevent injuries.
NCAAFB – Jim Harbaugh: Michigan good place to be despite challenges
Jim Harbaugh says that Michigan might not be perfect, but that the football program “doesn’t get any better” compared to other programs. Since losing in the College Football Playoff semifinals, Harbaugh interviewed with the Denver Broncos and talked to the NCAA about alleged violations. He also fired an assistant coach under investigation by police. Harbaugh said multiple coaches on his staff had conversations with NFL teams but chose to stay at the school, adding: ““People do what they think is best for them professionally and personally.”
Golf – PGA – Horschel, Bramlett lead Honda Classic with 1st-round 65s

Horschel had six birdies and one bogey. Pierceson Coody and Justin Suh were one shot back. Coody is playing his first PGA Tour event as a professional on a sponsor exemption. He’s a two-time winner in 15 starts on the Korn Ferry Tour since turning pro last summer.

There are six teams in the NBA that look pretty comfortably in playoff position. There are four other teams that pretty much know they’re not going anywhere. MLB – Ferguson Jenkins to be honored with statue in hometown
Ferguson Jenkins’ hometown will honor the baseball Hall of Famer with a statue. Chatham-Kent will unveil a 9-foot bronze figure of the 80-year-old former pitcher on June 10. It is a replica of the statue by sculptor Lou Cella that was unveiled outside Chicago’s Wrigley Field last May. Jenkins was 284-226 with a 3.34 ERA and 3,192 strikeouts in 19 big league seasons for Philadelphia, the Cubs, Texas and Boston. Jenkins was a three-time All-Star. He won 20 or more games each year from 1967-72, was voted the 1971 NL Cy Young Award and in 1991 became the first Canadian inducted into the baseball Hall.
MLB – MLB curtails infield shift, hopes for more singles, speed
One of MLB’s most visible rule changes for 2023 is a sizable curtailing of infield shifts. The practice had grown exponentially over the past several years and has been partially blamed for a steady league-wide decline in batting average. The new rule states that all four infielders must have both feet within the outer boundary of the infield — and two infielders must be on each side of second base — when the pitch is delivered. MLB has also mandated that the infield dirt cutout have uniform dimensions in all 30 ballparks. The outfield edge of the dirt must be 95 feet from the front of the pitching rubber.

The tournament in Indian Wells will be played from March 6-19 and the Miami Open is scheduled from March 20-April 2. Russia’s reintegration into the world of sports one year after the invasion of Ukraine began threatens to create the biggest rift in the Olympic movement since the Cold War. The International Olympic Committee is working to bring athletes from Russia and ally Belarus back into competition but not everyone agrees. Ukraine and several of its allies say any return for Russia would be unacceptable. The IOC says excluding Russian and Belarusian athletes entirely would be discriminatory.

Michigan State 80, (17) Indiana 65 – Michigan State tops Indiana in 1st home game since shootings
Tyson Walker shook off a slow start to score 23 points and lifted Michigan State to an 80-65 win over No. 17 Indiana on Tuesday night in its first home game since last week’s shootings on campus that killed three students and hospitalized five others. The Spartans surged into the lead late in the first half after Walker started making 3-pointers following an 0-for-4 start from the field and were ahead by double digits for much of the second half. The Hoosiers relied heavily on Trayce Jackson-Davis, who had 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists. The victims, survivors and first responders from last week’s shootings were recognized with pregame remarks. There was also a moment of silence that was broken by the Michigan State band playing “MSU Shadows,” when Izzo looked left, right, high and low at fans in the stands. In the front row of the student section, white shirts were placed on eight seats to save them for the eight students shot on campus. The funeral for the last of the three students killed was earlier Tuesday.

NBA – Bulls sign Beverley after ruling injured Ball out for season
The Chicago Bulls have signed veteran point guard Patrick Beverley and ruled point guard Lonzo Ball out for the season because of lingering discomfort in his surgically repaired left knee. The Bulls brought in Beverley to help solidify a position that has been a sore spot all season with Ball recovering from his second left knee surgery in less than a year and his third since entering the NBA in 2017 with the Los Angeles Lakers. The team says Ball’s focus now will be on resolving the discomfort he feels performing “high level basketball-related activities” and making “a full return” for next season. Beverley, a Chicago product, is a three-time All-NBA Defensive Team selection.

Pius Suter scored two goals to help the Detroit Red Wings stay hot with a 3-1 win at the Washington Capitals. The Red Wings have won six of seven and passed the Capitals in the Eastern Conference wild-card race. They won even after captain Dylan Larkin was ejected for cross-checking T.J. Oshie in the face. Defensive defenseman Robert Hagg broke a 75-game goal drought and Ville Husso made 26 saves for the victory. Washington has lost five in a row in regulation for the first time since January 2014.
Blackhawks 3, Golden Knights 2 – SO – Johnson scores in SO, Blackhawks edge Golden Knights 3-2
Tyler Johnson scored the lone goal in a shootout to give the Chicago Blackhawks their third straight victory, 3-2 over the Vegas Golden Knights. Johnson beat Laurent Brossoit with a low shot in the third round of the tiebreaker after scoring a power-play goal with 55 seconds left in regulation to for force overtime. Johnson tied it on a screened shot from the high slot after Vegas defenseman Alex Pietrangelo was penalized for delay of game for lofting the puck over the glass and goalie Petr Mrazek was pulled for an extra attacker. Jack Eichel scored his 18th goal and Keegan Kolesar also connected for the Golden Knights, whose five-game winning streak ended. Rookie Cole Guttman scored in his second straight game for Chicago.

WNBA – Brittney Griner re-signs with Phoenix Mercury
Brittney Griner will be back in the WNBA this season, once again playing with the Phoenix Mercury. Griner, who was a free agent, re-signed with the team Tuesday. The 32-year-old Griner had said she would return to Phoenix in a social media post in December, after she returned home from her 10-month detainment in Russia. Griner had been arrested at an airport just outside of Moscow on drug possession charges a year ago and was brought home in a dramatic high-level prisoner exchange in December. The 6-foot-9 center last played for the Mercury in 2021 and helped the team reach the WNBA Finals. She averaged 20.5 points and 9.5 rebounds that season. Griner, who was drafted No. 1 in 2013 by the Mercury, was listed Saturday on Phoenix’s roster on the WNBA website. Since returning home from Russia, Griner has been out of the public spotlight, with the exception of appearances at the Super Bowl, the Phoenix Open and an MLK Day event in Phoenix, where she lives.
Golf – LIV – Column: LIV resumes after break that was anything but loud
The PGA Tour is coming off two big weeks with Scottie Scheffler winning in raucous Phoenix and Jon Rahm at Riviera. Tiger Woods caused the biggest buzz of all. Now it’s LIV Golf’s turn. The Saudi-funded league begins its second season and will be compared with two loud weeks on the PGA Tour, with two more to follow. AP Golf Writer Doug Ferguson says this wasn’t a great offseason for LIV. It signed six players, none prominent. It also had four executives leave. The LIV season starts Friday in the Mexican resort of Mayakoba. One upside is a new television partner in The CW Network.
Golf – Woods, McIlroy break ground on high-tech golf league site
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are closer to seeing their high-tech golf league become reality. The ceremonial groundbreaking for the arena that will house the league that’s being called TGL was held Tuesday at Palm Beach State College. Woods and McIlroy are among the co-founders and were there for the first step of actual construction. Play will begin early next year. Woods and McIlroy so far have 11 players committed to the league. Besides them, the league will include world No. 1 Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Adam Scott, Collin Morikawa, Matt Fitzpatrick, Max Homa, Billy Horschel, Justin Rose and Xander Schauffele.

It was Ohio State’s first victory over a ranked team since topping Michigan 66-57 on New Year’s Eve. Taylor Mikesell made four 3-pointers and scored 12 for Ohio State (23-5, 12-5 Big Ten). Cotie McMahon had seven points, eight rebounds and seven assists. McMahon was named the Big Ten freshman of the week for the sixth time earlier on Monday after averaging 19.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. Leigha Brown scored a career-high 36 points with nine rebounds for Michigan.
NCAAMBKB – Houston back at No. 1 as Northwestern makes debut
Houston returned to No. 1 in the AP men’s college basketball poll for the third time this season while Northwestern and Texas A&M barged into the rankings after each had a pair of impressive wins last week. The Cougars picked up 48 first-place votes from the 62-member national media panel with just two weeks left in the regular season. Alabama dropped one spot after losing to Tennessee and routing Georgia in its lone week at No. 1. The Crimson Tide held onto seven first-place votes, while Kansas also earned seven to climb two spots to No. 3. North Carolina State and Florida Atlantic dropped out after each lost games last week.
NCAAWBKB – South Carolina’s No. 1 run in Top 25 hits 35 weeks
South Carolina remained No. 1 in The Associated Press women’s college basketball poll after topping Mississippi in overtime on Sunday. The Gamecocks have been No. 1 for 35 straight weeks, the third-longest streak of all time. They received 27 of the 28 first-place votes from the national media panel, marking the first time all season they weren’t a unanimous choice. Indiana got the other first-place vote and stayed second in the poll. The Hoosiers have won 14 consecutive games and are 9-0 against AP Top 25 teams this season — the most wins against ranked opponents of any team in the country. Stanford, UConn and LSU round out the top five teams.

Olympics – Nations: No clarity on neutrality, no Olympics for Russia
The governments of 35 nations signed a statement calling on the IOC to clarify the definition of “neutrality” as it seeks a way to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes back into international sports and next year’s Paris Olympics. The statement said the countries do not agree Russian and Belarusian athletes should be allowed back into competition as long as the lack of clarity and concrete details on a workable neutrality model aren’t addressed. The United States, Britain, France, Canada and Germany were among those signing. Those five countries brought nearly one-fifth of all the athletes to the Tokyo Games in 2021. The letter was the product of a Feb. 10 summit in London.
MLB – Cubs, RHP Michael Fulmer finalize $4M, 1-year contract
The Chicago Cubs have added Michael Fulmer to their bullpen, finalizing a $4 million, one-year contract with the right-hander. Fulmer played for Detroit and Minnesota last season, going 5-6 with 3.39 ERA in a career-high 67 appearances. He began the season with the Tigers and was traded to the Twins in August. Fulmer says conversations with former Cubs relievers Andrew Chafin and Daniel Norris cemented his decision to join the team.
MLB – Elvis Andrus to play 2nd base with Chicago White Sox
Elvis Andrus is joining the Chicago White Sox, stepping into the team’s opening at second base. Andrus has finalized a $3 million, one-year contract. The two-time All-Star has played shortstop for his entire big league career, but he is going to move over to second in his return to Chicago. To make room on the roster, left-hander Bennett Sousa was designated for assignment. The 34-year-old Andrus finished last season with Chicago, hitting .271 with nine homers and 28 RBIs in 43 games after he was cut by Oakland.
MLB – Milestones behind him, Cabrera hopes for fun final year
Miguel Cabrera sounds at ease with his decision to call it a career. The Detroit slugger joked with reporters in his usual playful way and insisted he doesn’t need opponents to lavish him with attention. That will likely come this season whether he wants it or not. Two decades after his big league debut as a 20-year-old Florida Marlin, Cabrera is entering his final season. He’s hoping for good health and more wins for the Tigers. Cabrera hit his 500th home run two years ago. Last season he reached 3,000 hits.
MLB – Major league teams searching for advantages with new rules
The only certainty about Major League Baseball’s new rules for the 2023 season is that everyone is going to push and pull on them in search of an edge. The size of the bases has been increased to 18-inch squares from 15. The new pitch clock is 15 seconds with no runners on base and 20 seconds with runners. The increasingly frequent infield shift has been eliminated, and there is a limit of two of what MLB calls disengagements — pickoff attempts or steps off the rubber — per plate appearance.
