Michigan 84, Michigan State 72 – Spartans lose to Michigan in their first game since shooting
Michigan showed its support for rival Michigan State with a poignant pregame ceremony before the Wolverines took an 84-72 win on Saturday night, the first game for the Spartan men since a shooting on the their campus that killed three students and wounded five others. A long moment of silence was broken by the Michigan band playing the Spartans’ alma mater — “MSU Shadows” — while Crisler Arena was dimly lit with green and white lights from LED wristbands that were given to fans. Kobe Bufkin snapped a tie with a 3-pointer after he bobbled the ball as the shot clock was winding down with two minutes left and the Wolverines (15-12, 9-7 Big Ten) scored the last 12 points to split the season series.  Dug McDaniel led the Wolverines with 18 points, Bufkin scored 17, Hunter Dickinson 14 and Joey Baker and Jett Howard had 10 each. Howard left the game with an apparent leg injury early in the second half.  Joey Hauser scored 20 points, Malik Hall 14 and Tyson Walker 11 for the Spartans (16-10, 8-7)

Blackhawks 5, Maple Leafs 3 – Kane has hat trick, Blackhawks beat Maple Leafs 5-3
Patrick Kane had his ninth career regular-season hat trick, rookie Cole Guttman scored the game-winner and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-3. Max Domi had a goal and three assists for the Blackhawks, who won their second straight following a three-game losing streak and climbed out of last place in the NHL. The Maple Leafs had won two straight, including a 5-2 romp over the Blackhawks on Wednesday in Toronto. Guttman scored his first NHL goal by beating Ilya Samsonov over the blocker with a hard wrist shot from right wing with 8:18 remaining to break a 3-all tie.

NHL – Blackhawks C Toews dealing with long COVID-19 symptoms
Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews says he is dealing with symptoms of long COVID-19 and chronic immune response syndrome. Toews hasn’t played since Jan. 28. The Blackhawks placed the 34-year-old center on injured reserve on Wednesday with what they said was a non-COVID-19-related illness. Toews missed the 2020-21 season with what he described as chronic immune response syndrome. He has spent his entire career with Chicago, winning three Stanley Cup titles. But he is eligible for free agency after this season.

    Gianns 184, LeBron 175 – Tatum scores All-Star record 55, Team Giannis wins 184-175
Jayson Tatum put on a record-setting show, and made Giannis Antetokounmpo look like a genius. Tatum scored an All-Star Game-record 55 points, and Team Giannis ended LeBron James’ hold on All-Star captain supremacy by beating Team LeBron 184-175 in the NBA’s annual showcase exhibition game Game on Sunday night. Tatum had 27 of his points in the third quarter, another All-Star Game record for any period. He was the first pick by Antetokounmpo in the starters’ portion of the All-Star draft, and in the end, that pick proved to absolutely be the right one.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. won the Daytona 500 in double overtime and under caution Sunday night in the longest running of “The Great American Race.” The two overtimes pushed the 65th running of the race to a record 212 laps — 12 laps beyond the scheduled distance. Stenhouse’s win in a Chevrolet for JTG Daugherty Racing was the third of his career. His only other victories came in 2017 — at Talladega and the summer race at Daytona.

MLB – AP sources: White Sox, INF Andrus agree to 1-year contract
Elvis Andrus has agreed to a $3 million, one-year contract with the Chicago White Sox, likely filling the team’s hole at second base. Two people familiar with the negotiations confirmed the deal to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the move was pending a successful physical. The 34-year-old Andrus finished last season with Chicago, hitting .271 with nine homers and 28 RBIs in 43 games after he was cut by Oakland. He was signed by the White Sox after Tim Anderson had surgery on his left hand, but the All-Star shortstop is healthy again and the team has an opening at second.

NCAAHKY – Ohio State-Michigan take feud on ice at Browns home stadium
Ohio State and Michigan found a new outdoor spot to continue their long-running feud. The bitter Big Ten rivals squared off on the ice Saturday as the schools’ nationally ranked hockey teams played at FirstEnergy Stadium, home of the NFL’s Cleveland Browns. More than 45,000 fans were on hand for “Faceoff On The Lake” as the Buckeyes and Wolverines skated on a temporary rink that will also be used for upcoming minor league and high school playoff games. It’s the second time Ohio State and Michigan have dropped the puck in Cleveland. In 2012, the schools played at Progressive Field, the Guardians’ downtown ballpark a few miles away.

Bucks 112, Bulls 100 – Giannis sets assists mark, hurts wrist; Bucks beat Bulls
Giannis Antetokounmpo broke Milwaukee’s career assists record before leaving the game because of a sprained right wrist, and the Bucks won their 12th straight, beating the Chicago Bulls 112-100. Brook Lopez scored a season-high 33 points. Antetokounmpo’s injury early in the second quarter cast a cloud over a team that appeared to have so much going for it heading into the All-Star break. The two-time MVP was hurt trying to block a finger roll attempt by Chicago’s Coby White. He jammed his wrist against the stanchion and stayed down grimacing in pain. Antetokounmpo finished with a season-low two points and three assists, giving him 3,274 over 10 seasons to break Paul Pressey’s record of 3,272 from 1982 to 1990. NCAAFB – Jury: NCAA not liable in ex-Grand Valley quarterback’s death
An Indiana jury has found the NCAA not liable in the death of former Grand Valley State quarterback Cullen Finnerty, whose widow accused the college sports governing body of failing to warn athletes about the risks of head injuries while playing football. The NCAA argued that Finnerty’s death did not result from a concussion while playing for the Michigan college or smaller blows to the head during his playing days, but from other health problems and addictions. ESPN reports that a Marion County jury agreed Wednesday with the NCAA’s arguments. Finnerty’s widow sued the Indianapolis-based NCAA after his May 2013 death, arguing that it did not properly protect college athletes and warn them of the risks of head injuries while playing football.

Olivia Miles made a fadeaway jumper from just inside the 3-point line at the overtime buzzer to give No. 10 Notre Dame a 78-76 victory over Louisville. The Cardinals’ Olivia Cochran had tied the game on a layup with 3.8 seconds remaining. The Irish called timeout to advance the ball to midcourt. MLB – Tim McCarver, big league catcher and broadcaster, dies at 81
The famed broadcaster and former St. Louis Cardinals star Tim McCarver has died. He was 81. During 60 years in major league baseball, McCarver played in two All-Star games and on two World Series championship teams. He was the preferred catcher for Bob Gibson in the 1960s and Steve Carlton in the 1970s. He later had a long run as one of the country’s most recognizable, incisive and talkative television commentators. For years, he teamed with Joe Buck on Fox sports telecasts. The Baseball Hall of Fame honored his on-air work in 2012.

MLB – Taillon working on new slider in spring training with Cubs
Jameson Taillon had been thinking about a new slider for a couple of years. When his new team also brought up the idea, he was more than ready to give it a shot. Taillon is working on a new sweeper slider in his first spring training since he finalized a four-year contract with the Chicago Cubs that is worth roughly $68 million. The 6-foot-5 right-hander is hoping his new version can essentially replace his previous slider. Taillon said he felt like his slider had underperformed for a while. But the COVID-19 pandemic and baseball’s labor lockout hampered his ability to try a new version.

MLB – MLB: Bally network troubles could lead to end of blackouts
Commissioner Rob Manfred says Major League Baseball can produce games digitally in conjunction with MLB.TV if Bally Sports regional networks are no longer broadcasting them. He says this is a chance to address the game blackouts that inspire so much anger among fans. Diamond Sports Group is the parent company of 19 Bally Sports networks, including Bally’s Sports Detroit. It skipped about $140 million in interest payments due Wednesday, starting a 30-day grace period that could be the prelude to a bankruptcy filing. Manfred acknowledged some teams could be at risk of losing revenue. He says MLB is prepared to help those teams.

NCAAFB – AP sources: Irish to promote Parker to OC, hire Guidugli
Notre Dame is promoting tight ends coach Gerard Parker to offensive coordinator and working to hire Wisconsin assistant Gino Guidugli as quarterbacks coach for the Fighting Irish, according to two people with knowledge of the decisions. The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because deals were still being finalized and needed university approval. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman was forced to retool his offensive staff following the departure this month of offensive coordinator Tommy Rees to Alabama, where he will hold the same position.

NCAA – NCAA asks US appeals court to block pay for student-athletes
The NCAA is asking a federal appeals court to reject a legal effort to make colleges pay Division I athletes an hourly wage. Lawyers for the students say that weekly, they spend 30 hours or more on their sport, and often need money for expenses even if they are on scholarship. The NCAA says the idea would cause chaos, and leave student-athletes with a tax bill for their scholarships. Critics also fear it could lead schools to cut sports that don’t generate revenue, while sending more resources to profitable football and basketball programs. The three-judge panel in Philadelphia did not say when it would rule.

NFL – Bears buy property for potential Arlington Heights stadium
The Chicago Bears have bought the property that they’ve been sizing up for a new enclosed stadium in suburban Arlington Heights. The Bears announced Wednesday afternoon that they bought the 326-acre property for $197.2 million. The Bears cautioned that the purchase doesn’t mean their plans for a new stadium and an entertainment district will come to fruition. The Bears currently play at Soldier Field in downtown Chicago. Economic analysts have said creating a Bears entertainment district would create more than 48,000 jobs and generate $9.4 billion for the local economy.

MLB – Clevinger reports as MLB probes domestic violence charges
Mike Clevinger has reported to the Chicago White Sox for spring training, joining his new team amid an ongoing investigation by Major League Baseball into allegations of domestic violence. White Sox general manager Rick Hahn tells reporters the team’s “only option” is to allow Clevinger to report while awaiting results of MLB’s investigation into the accusations. The 32-year-old pitcher finalized a $12 million, one-year contract with the White Sox on Dec. 4. MLB’s investigation predates Clevinger’s contract with his new team. Clevinger told reporters he is confident he will be exonerated.

One of 12 boys rescued from Thai cave dies at British school
One of the 12 boys rescued from a flooded cave in Thailand in 2018 after being trapped for more than two weeks has died in England, where he was attending a sports academy. The foundation sponsoring his studies says 17-year-old Duangphet Phromthep was found unconscious in his room at the Brooke House College Football Academy and died later at a hospital. The cause of death was not immediately known. The boy was the captain of the Wild Boars, a youth soccer team in northern Thailand. Twelve members of the team and their coach were exploring a cave complex in 2018 when they were trapped by rapidly rising floodwaters. A massive search and rescue operation was launched, involving international divers.

MHSAA – Bartz retires as Edwardsburg head football coach
Edwardsburg high school football coach Kevin Bartz announced he will be retiring at the end of this school year.  Bartz told Leader Publications that he’s not sure if he would also be retiring as a teacher at the school.   Bartz is the third most successful head coach in Southwest Michigan, only behind Denny Dock (Hartford, Dowagiac, Lakeshore) and Decatur’s Joe Groh.  Bartz led the Eddies to the Division 4 state championship in 2018.  He steps down with a record of 216-78 in his 28 seasons at Edwardsburg’s head coach.  Edwardsburg has won the Wolverine Conference Championship 10 consecutive years and has not had a losing season since 2009.   Edwardsburg is scheduled to open up the 2023 season at home against defending Division 6 State Champions Grand Rapids West Catholic on August 25.

NFL – Colts hire Eagles OC Shane Steichen as their head coach
The Indianapolis Colts have hired Shane Steichen as their head coach. The move ends a search that took more than a month and included more than a dozen candidates. Each of the Colts’ last two full-time hires were offensive coordinators for Philadelphia Eagles teams that made the Super Bowl. Frank Reich was hired in 2018 after the Eagles won their first championship since 1960 but was fired in October as the Colts’ season started to unravel. Interim coach Jeff Saturday was one of the finalists for the permanent position. But Indy instead elected to hire Steichen, who becomes the league’s third 37-year-old head coach.

NCAAFB – Alabama announces hiring of coordinators Steele, Rees
Alabama coach Nick Saban has hired Kevin Steele as defensive coordinator and Tommy Rees as offensive coordinator. Alabama announced the already widely reported hirings on Monday, along with the addition of inside linebackers coach Austin Armstrong. Steele is a former defensive coordinator at a number of Power Five schools and spent last season at Miami. Rees had spent the last three seasons as offensive coordinator at Notre Dame, where he’s a former starting quarterback. Armstrong was the Southern Miss defensive coordinator the past two seasons.

NCAAFB – Michigan says it had proof against fired football assistant
Michigan fired football co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss in January after he failed to attend a meeting to discuss whether he had gained access to computer accounts that belonged to other people. That’s according to documents released to The Associated Press. An athletic department official told Weiss that the university had evidence that he had “inappropriately accessed” the accounts. Weiss was fired on Jan. 20, after skipping a meeting. Campus police are investigating possible computer crimes at the football building known as Schembechler Hall. Weiss has not directly addressed the allegations, saying only that he looks forward to “putting this matter” behind him.

NCAAMBKB – Bama takes over number 1 in men’s top 25
Alabama is the new No. 1, rising to the top spot in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll for the first time in 20 years. Purdue’s loss to Northwestern last week caused a jumble at the top of the AP Top 25 and the Crimson Tide were the biggest beneficiaries. Alabama received 38 first-place votes from a 62-person media panel, moving up two spots to leapfrog No. 2 Houston. The Cougars had 22 first-place votes to remain at No. 2 and Purdue, down to No. 3, still had two votes at No. 1. UCLA and Kansas rounded out the top five.

NCAAWBKB – South Carolina still #1
The UNLV women are ranked No. 23 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 college basketball poll. It is the first ranking for the Lady Rebels since 1994. South Carolina is ranked No. 1 for the 34th consecutive week — the third-longest run in poll history. Indiana, Stanford, Utah and LSU round out the top five. UConn saw its 30-year streak of not losing consecutive games end last week and is now ranked sixth.

NCAAMBKB – Former Michigan State star pleads guilty in 2021 murder case
A former Michigan State University basketball star has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and a firearm charge in the fatal shooting of a Detroit man. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy says 31-year-old Keith Damon Appling pleaded guilty Monday to one count each of second-degree murder and felony firearm in the killing of 66-year-old Clyde Edmonds. Prosecutors say Appling fatally shot Edmonds in May 2021 after the men argued over a handgun. His plea agreement calls for 18 to 40 years in prison on the second-degree murder charge and two years to be served consecutively on the firearm charge. The Detroit Pershing prep star played at Michigan State from 2010 to 2014. Appling also played pro basketball overseas and had two brief contracts with the NBA’s Orlando Magic.

MLB – Spring training’s start brings pitch clocks, shift limits
Spring training opens Monday in Florida and Arizona. And there’ll be lots of new changes, like pitch clocks, limits on defensive shifts and larger bases. Players are reporting early ahead of the World Baseball Classic. Opening day is March 30. This season will see some star players in new places: Jacob deGrom, Justin Verlander, Trea Turner and Xander Bogaerts. There also are four new managers: Bruce Bochy, Matt Quatraro, Pedro Grifol and Skip Schumaker.

MLB – ‘Ghost runner’ in extra innings made permanent by MLB
Starting extra innings with a runner on second base during the regular season was made a permanent rules change by Major League Baseball after three seasons of use during the coronavirus pandemic. Use of position players as pitchers also was tightened by the joint competition committee. They will be limited to extra innings, when a player’s team is losing by eight or more runs or is winning by 10 or more runs in the ninth inning. Last year, a position player could pitch only in extra innings or if his team was losing or winning by six or more runs.
