Jett Howard made six 3-pointers and scored 22 points, Hunter Dickinson had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Michigan beat Nebraska 93-72. Nebraska, which trailed by 24 points in the first half, got within 48-39 early in the second half — the closest margin since 21-12. But Dickinson answered with a basket to put Michigan ahead by double digits for the rest of the game. Howard made four 3-pointers in the second half and scored 16 points, and Dickinson added 14 points. Michigan led for over 36 minutes and shot 57.6% from the field, including 14 of 26 from 3-point range.  Dug McDaniel added 14 points, Kobe Bufkin had 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists for Michigan (14-10, 8-5 Big Ten). Lance Terry scored 19 points, the last two on a game-winning tip-in at the buzzer that gave Georgia Tech a 70-68 victory over Notre Dame. With the score tied at 68 with five seconds remaining, the Yellow Jackets’ Kyle Sturdivant drove the left side of the lane and missed a step-back jumper along the baseline. Terry, who had inbounded the ball after a timeout, followed down the left side and delivered a two-handed tip-in for the victory that snapped a nine-game losing streak. Georgia Tech held Notre Dame to 1-of-11 field goal shooting over the final seven minutes and the Yellow Jackets won despite making only 2 of 8 shots down the stretch.

NFL – Chiefs’ Mahomes says ankle will be ready for Super Bowl
Patrick Mahomes says he’s “definitely in a better spot” when it comes to his ailing right ankle than he was for the AFC championship game. The All-Pro quarterback also says he doesn’t expect to be limited by it when he leads the Kansas City Chiefs against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. Mahomes spoke before Wednesday’s practice at Arizona State’s facility. He said he’ll probably continue to get treatment on the ankle he hurt against Jacksonville in the divisional round throughout the week and possibly right up until kickoff.

NFL – Super Bowl has rare matchup of top 2 regular-season teams
This year’s Super Bowl features a rare matchup of the NFL’s top two teams from the regular season. The Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs were the league’s only 14-game winners, marking just the sixth time since the 1970 merger that the squads with sole possession of the two best records in the regular season met for the championship. The last time it happened came after the 2013 season when Seattle beat Denver 43-8 in a matchup of 13-win teams.

NCAAFB – Northwestern to host Iowa at Wrigley Field
Wrigley Field will host a college football game for the third time since 2010 when Iowa plays Northwestern next season. Northwestern and the Chicago Cubs announced that the Wildcats’ home game would be played Nov. 4. Northwestern played Illinois at Wrigley in 2010 in the MLB ballpark’s first college football game since 1938 and the Wildcats hosted Purdue there in 2021. Wrigley Field has a long history of hosting football games. The Chicago Bears played there from 1921 to 1970. The old Chicago Cardinals also played at Wrigley Field as well as DePaul University until its program folded in 1939.

SPHL – Minor league hockey game a forfeit after home team no-shows
A bizarre scene unfolded in a low-level minor hockey league over the weekend: The home team didn’t show up. The visiting team from Quad City took the ice for warmups at the arena in Danville, Illinois, for a Southern Professional Hockey League game at the Vermilion County Bobcats. Fans filed in, vendors sold concessions and officials were there to drop the puck. But the Bobcats had no players, their coach did not show up and they had no athletic trainer on site. After a delay of game penalty and 5-minute delay, it was declared a forfeit and visiting players skated with fans and took the 3-hour bus ride home. There are now concerns last-place Vermilion County, which has lost 77 of 86 games in its existence, will fold midseason.

Olympics – Probe into US Olympic failings stunted by red tape in DC
More than two years since it was greenlighted by Congress, the panel established to probe the inner workings of the U.S. Olympics has yet to conduct a formal interview because of bureaucratic red tape in Washington. The Commission on the State of U.S. Olympics and Paralympics is charged with looking how U.S. leaders handled sex-abuse cases that were mismanaged for decades. It took 19 months after it was established in October 2020 for the commission to receive the $2 million Congress budgeted for its use. Then, it took eight more months to identify and hire the panel’s executive director. Now that those issues are resolved, however, the commission has to decide how to spend the money by Sept. 30 or risk not being able to use it.

NBA – Scoring King: James passes Abdul-Jabbar for NBA points mark
LeBron James is the NBA’s new career scoring leader. With a stepback jumper with 10.9 seconds left in the third quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers’ game Tuesday night against Oklahoma City, James pushed his career total to 38,388 points and broke the record that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar held for nearly four decades. Abdul-Jabbar became the league’s all-time leading scorer on April 5, 1984 and wound up retiring in 1989 with 38,387 points. The game stopped for a ceremony after James broke the record and he had tears in his eyes as he thanked the crowd, Abdul-Jabbar, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and others. James finished with 38 points in the Lakers’ 133-130 loss and stands at 38,390.

NBA – Mat Ishbia to AP: Suns ‘will be one of best places to work’
Mat Ishbia says his first major project as owner of the Phoenix Suns will be to listen to employees and figure out what problems they’ve faced. After that, he’ll start fixing. The tenure of embattled Robert Sarver as owner of the NBA’s Suns and WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury officially ended Tuesday. That’s when Ishbia — the chairman, president and chief executive of United Wholesale Mortgage, plus a member of Michigan State’s NCAA championship team in 2000 — took over. He will be governor, while brother Justin Ishbia will be alternate governor. Mat Ishbia told The Associated Press he plans to make adjustments in order to make the Suns “one of the best places to work.”

The NBA has rescheduled three games after one game was postponed last week when the Detroit Pistons were stranded in Dallas due to a winter storm.  The Pistons will make up their home game against the Washington Wizards on March 7. The league also rescheduled games for both franchises to avoid either team playing on three straight days. Detroit will host the Portland Trail Blazers on March 6, a day before previously scheduled. The Wizards will face the Milwaukee Bucks at home on March 5, also a day earlier than previously planned.

The vote was 29-0, with the Cleveland Cavaliers abstaining, according to a person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the vote had not yet been announced publicly. NFL – Super Bowl opening night returns with energetic atmosphere
Nick Sirianni answered questions about Rocky, Santa Claus and even which of his players on the Philadelphia Eagles he’d want to date his 5-year-old daughter when she grows up. Welcome to Super Bowl opening night where football talk gives way to the wacky. The circus atmosphere that kicks off the NFL’s biggest week has returned for the first time since 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic forced teams to meet the media on video conferences the past two seasons. Sirianni and the Eagles took the stage first at the home of the Phoenix Suns. “Fly, Eagles, Fly” chants greeted players and coaches before they spent an hour answering wide-ranging questions from more than 2,000 media members.

NFL – For Super Bowl ads this year, crypto is out, booze is in
The hottest ticket in town for advertisers is officially sold out. Fox said Monday that in-game ads for Super Bowl LVII have all been sold. The big game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles takes place on Sunday. The Super Bowl is advertising’s biggest stage, with advertisers jockeying to get their products in front of the more than 100 million people that watch each year. Mark Evans, executive vice president of ad sales for Fox Sports, said a few ads went for more than $7 million for a 30-second spot. Most sold between $6 million and $7 million.

Minnesota’s game at Illinois has been postponed because of COVID-19 health and safety protocols within the Gophers’ program. The teams were scheduled to play Tuesday. They will meet on Feb. 20 instead. Minnesota’s announcement did not specify how many players would have been unable to play. The Gophers had only eight available scholarship players for their last game when they lost 81-46 to Maryland. The game will be rescheduled by the Big Ten with input from both schools. Minnesota is next scheduled to host Iowa this Sunday. Illinois will host No. 24 Rutgers this Saturday.

NCAAMBKB – Purdue stays No. 1 in AP Top 25; NC State in at No. 22
Purdue remains atop The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll despite losing its second game of the season. The new poll out Monday also saw Marquette push into the top 10 and North Carolina State make its first poll appearance in four years. The Boilermakers earned 38 of 62 first-place votes to stay at No. 1 for a third straight week and seventh time this season. Houston rose to No. 2 with 22 first-place votes. Marquette is in the top 10 for the first time since 2019. That also was the last time N.C. State was ranked before checking in at No. 22.

NCAAWBKB – Indiana reaches No. 2 in women’s Top 25; SC still No. 1
South Carolina beat UConn to remain No. 1 in The Associated Press women’s college basketball poll for the 33rd consecutive week. Indiana moved up to No. 2 for its highest ranking in school history. LSU stayed third and has a showdown with the Gamecocks on Sunday in a matchup of the last undefeated teams. The Huskies moved up to fourth and Iowa was fifth. Stanford fell to sixth after losing to Washington. Utah, Maryland, Duke and Notre Dame round out the top 10. Colorado re-entered at No. 25 while Middle Tennessee fell out.

Golf – PGA – Justin Rose wins at Pebble Beach to end 4-year drought
Justin Rose is a PGA Tour winner again after four years. Rose made short work on a short Monday with three birdies in four holes. That sent him to a 66 and a three-shot victory in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Rose had not won since Torrey Pines four years ago. Now he’s headed to the Masters again. The tournament was delayed to a Monday finish because of high wind on Saturday. Rose benefited from that stoppage of play. And he was helped by hardly any wind over the final nine holes he played Monday. Brendon Todd and Brandon Wu finished second.

Michigan 77, Ohio State 69 – Dickinson leads Michigan to 77-69 win over skidding Buckeyes
Hunter Dickinson scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Michigan to a 77-69 win over Ohio State. Jett Howard added 16 points and Kobe Bufkin 13 with eight rebounds for the Wolverines, who missed their last four shots to drop to 49% for the game. Bruce Thornton scored 22 points to lead the Buckeyes, who have lost four straight and 10 of 12. Thornton was 10-of-13 shooting and Ohio State made five of its last eight shots but that only raised the shooting percent to 41. Bufkin, Dickinson and Howard combined for a Michigan 12-3 run for a 24-14 lead midway through the first half. Despite a poor shooting half, the Buckeyes closed it to 41-36 at the half as Sueing hit a last-minute 3-pointer.

Trailing for most of the game’s first 28 minutes, the Blue Devils took the lead for good in the final two minutes of the third quarter to knock off the Fighting Irish. Duke led 48-46 going into the fourth quarter after trailing Notre Dame by as many as five points in the third quarter. A steal by Elizabeth Balogun in the final 15 seconds helped seal the win for the Blue Devils. Maddy Westbeld led Notre Dame with 15 points. The Irish fell out of a first-place tie with Duke in the ACC standings.

NBA – AP source: Kyrie Irving going to the Dallas Mavericks
All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving is being traded by the Brooklyn Nets. The team has struck a deal with the Dallas Mavericks. That’s according to a person with knowledge of the situation who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither team had announced the move. The Mavericks will trade Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith and a package of draft picks to the Nets. The blockbuster trade ends Irving’s pairing with Kevin Durant before it ever had much of a chance to click. Dallas also gets Markieff Morris in the deal.

NASCAR – Truex wins NASCAR’s sloppy return to Los Angeles Coliseum
Martin Truex Jr. won NASCAR’s return to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for its season-opening exhibition race. Truex took the lead with 25 laps to go in the Busch Light Clash, a 150-lap race that was moved last year to the Coliseum as NASCAR built a temporary quarter-mile track in a bold attempt to try something new. NASCAR knew it was going to be difficult to duplicate the success of last year’s race in its return to the Coliseum and Sunday night’s racing wasn’t great: there were 25 cautions and laps under yellow didn’t count. There were only five cautions in last year’s race.
