White Sox 13, Tigers 0 – Moncada’s five hits, five RBIs lead White Sox past Tigers
Yoán Moncada had five hits and five RBIs, including a run-scoring single against Kody Clemens, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 13-0 for a three-game series sweep. Moncada, Danny Mendick and Seby Zavala homered for Chicago, which had dropped four of five before arriving in Detroit. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch gave up on his pitching staff after six innings, using Harold Castro for the seventh, Clemens for the eighth, and Tucker Barnhart for the ninth. It was the pitching debut for the 26-year-old Clemens, whose father, Roger, won seven Cy Young Awards.

Padres 19, Cubs 5 – Machado homers in hit parade, Padres pelt Cubs 19-5.
Manny Machado lined a single for his 1,500th hit and hit a two-run homer in a four-RBI night to help the San Diego Padres beat the reeling Chicago Cubs 19-5. Machado was one of five Padres with three hits as San Diego routed the Cubs for the second straight hot night at Wrigley Field. Jorge Alfaro added a two-run homer and three RBIs as San Diego improved to 40-24 in winning its third straight and seventh in nine. Jake Cronenworth and Jurickson Profar each doubled twice and had three hits for the Padres, who entered the game percentage points behind the first-place Dodgers in the NL West. The Cubs have lost nine straight.

NHL – National Hockey League – 2022 Stanley Cup Finals
    Last Night
Colorado Avalanche 4, Tampa Bay Lightning 3 – OT           (COL Leads 1-0)

Avalanche 4, Lightning 3 – OT – Avalanche beat Lightning in OT to open Stanley Cup Final
Andre Burakovsky scored 1:23 into overtime and the Colorado Avalanche opened the Stanley Cup Final with a 4-3 victory over the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday night. Burakovsky ended it after the Avalanche failed to score on a power play that began late in regulation when three-time champ Patrick Maroon put the puck over the glass. Burakovsky is one of only two Avalanche players who have won the Cup. The game likely wouldn’t have even reached OT if not for big penalty kills by the Avalanche, who were 3 for 3 against Tampa Bay’s potent power play. The final kill featured a crucial save by goaltender Darcy Kuemper and a series of clears by Norris Trophy finalist defenseman Cale Makar.

NHL – Bettman says NHL projected to set revenue record this season
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman says the league is projecting record revenue this season. Bettman at his annual state of the league address before the Stanley Cup Final estimated revenue will surpass $5.2 billion. The league generated $4.6 billion in the last normal full season in 2018-19. Bettman cited a significant uptick in scoring leading to high ratings and more interest in the game. The increase also stems from new U.S. media rights deals with ESPN and Turner Sports that went into effect this season.

NBA – National Basketball Association – 2022 NBA Finals
    Tonight
Golden State Warriors at Boston Celtics, 9:00 p.m.         (GSW Leads 3-2)

NBA – Warriors lean on history with a chance to close out Celtics
Stephen Curry and the Warriors have been within a game of clinching a championship in three of Golden State’s previous five trips to the NBA Finals during his 13-year NBA career. Curry says he’ll lean on that experience when he takes the court at Boston’s TD Garden on Thursday night. The Warriors have a 3-2 lead on the Celtics. The stakes will be equally high for the Celtics, who will try to force a Game 7. Celtics star Jayson Tatum said they’re optimistic, given how they’ve had Game 7 wins in the two prior playoff series.

WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association
    Last Night
    Phoenix Mercury 93, Indiana Fever 80 – d

    Mercury 93, Fever 80 – Charles has season-high 29 points, Mercury beat Fever 93-80

Golf – US Open – US Open turns focus from Saudi money to golf’s toughest test
The U.S. Open starts Thursday and not a moment too soon for those interested in golf. The talk all week at The Country Club outside of Boston has been more about the Saudi-funded LIV Golf league instead of thick rough and firm greens. This isn’t the first time an American major was overshadowed by controversy. The 1990 PGA Championship at Shoal Creek was under scrutiny because the club initially resisted having a Black member. The 2003 Masters was all about Martha Burk and her demand the club have a female member. Now the focus at Brookline finally turns to golf after endless chatter about Saudi money.

FIFA – FIFA to announce 2026 World Cup US sites, paring from 17
FIFA plans to announce the 2026 World Cup sites, trimming the U.S. list from 17 to 10-12. Three sites are planned in Mexico and two are likely in Canada. In the first 48-nation World Cup, soccer’s governing body planned 60 games in the U.S., including all from the quarterfinals on, and 10 each in Mexico and Canada. Just two of the contending stadiums hosted games in 1994, Pasadena’s Rose Bowl joined by Orlando’s Camping World Stadium. Dozens of training complexes have been built for MLS teams, creating a far better infrastructure

NFL – Commanders’ Snyder won’t testify before US House committee
A lawyer representing Dan Snyder told Congress the Washington Commanders owner will not testify at a hearing next week as part of an investigation into the team’s workplace conduct. Attorney Karen Patton Seymour sent a letter to the leaders of the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform explaining the reasons why Snyder was declining the invitation to appear at the June 22 hearing. Among the reasons given were a lack of assurance about the scope of questioning and a scheduling conflict. A spokeswoman for the committee says it intends to move forward with the hearing as scheduled. An NFL spokesman says Commissioner Roger Goodell plans to testify virtually.

Cease allowed one unearned run on seven hits and a walk. He struck out eight, while improving to 10-0 with a 1.91 ERA in 11 career starts against the Tigers. He’s the first pitcher to win his first 10 decisions against an opponent since Jamie Moyer started 10-0 against the Marlins in 2006-08. Luke Voit hit a two-run homer and a three-run double as the San Diego Padres rallied from a five-run deficit to hand the Chicago Cubs their eighth straight loss, 12-5. The Padres trailed 5-0 when Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks was pulled after allowing a double to Jake Cronenworth to start the sixth inning. Voit homered off reliever Chris Martin to spark a four-run sixth, and his double off Mychal Givens gave the Padres the lead for good at 7-5 and highlighted a six-run seventh. The Padres have won six of eight. Willson Contreras homered twice, drove in three runs and scored three times on a 3-for-4 night for the Cubs.

    Tonight
Tampa Bay Lightning at Colorado Avalanche, 8:00 p.m.       (Game 1)

NHL – Stanley Cup Final pits Lightning vs. high-scoring Avalanche
The Stanley Cup Final is a showdown between the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning and the high-scoring Colorado Avalanche. Colorado is averaging a playoff high 4.61 goals a game. Tampa Bay’s 2.41 goals against is the lowest of any team that made it past the first round. The Lightning know from prior postseason runs how to adjust their style of play for their opponent. This series is another test of containing a team that can fly up and down the ice and fill the net.

NHL – Signs Point to Lightning star returning for Cup Final Game 1
Indications are Brayden Point will return for the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final at the Colorado Avalanche. Point has missed the past month after injuring his right leg in Game 7 of the first round against Toronto. Coach Jon Cooper says things are trending toward Point playing in this series opener. Point took part in the Lightning’s final full team practice before Game 1 skating like he was never injured. He was Tampa Bay’s leading goal-scorer in each of the past two Cup runs.

    NHL – Knights hire Cassidy
Bruce Cassidy has been hired to coach the Vegas Golden Knights a week after being fired by the Boston Bruins. Cassidy becomes the Golden Knights’ third coach. He replaces Peter DeBoer, who was fired after Vegas missed the playoffs for the first time in its five-year history. Cassidy had a 245-108-46 record and led the Bruins for the playoffs for six straight seasons. He was fired on June 6, a month after the Bruins lost a seven-game first-round series to Carolina.

Golf – McIlroy questions competitive desire of players in LIV Golf
Rory McIlroy says he was wrong about his prediction in February that the Saudi-backed rival golf league was “dead in the water.”  He says that’s because he took at face value players like Dustin Johnson who said they were staying on the PGA Tour. McIlroy also described the LIV Golf league as a “pre-Champions Tour” circuit because of the ages of those interested. He says their best days are probably behind them. But he remains curious why younger players like Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed would go over. McIlroy says speaking for himself, at 33 he feels his best days are ahead.

WNBA – WNBA star Griner’s Russia detention extended for third time
U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner will remain in Russian custody through at least July 2 after her detention was extended for a third time, Russian state-run media has reported. The report gave no timeline for Griner’s trial, but cited a top Russian diplomat as saying that she will not be considered for detainee swaps until her case has been investigated. The 31-year-old WNBA center was arrested on suspicion of drug smuggling after Russian airport authorities claimed in February to have found cannabis products in her luggage. Her supporters have expressed concern that Moscow will use her as a bargaining chip amid tensions over its war in Ukraine.

NCAA – No angst about college athletes cashing in at 1st NIL summit
Hundreds of college athletes from schools all over the country are in Atlanta this week. They are attending the inaugural NIL Summit. They are learning from companies about how to build their brands. The summit is the first since the NCAA cleared the way for college athletes to earn endorsement money last July. The NCAA was not at the summit and neither were athletic directors from the nation’s biggest schools.

NCAAFB – NCAA athletes still excel in classroom despite pandemic
NCAA athletes saw their overall four-year Academic Progress Rate increase to 984, a one-point jump from the most recent data publicly released in May 2020. College sports’ largest governing body opted not to release last year’s numbers because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Men’s basketball finished at 968, up two points from 2020, while baseball, football and women’s basketball all remained even with their 2020 averages at 977, 964 and 983.

NCAAWBKB – UConn self-reported 15 minor NCAA violations in 2021
UConn’s athletic department self-reported 15 minor NCAA violations in 2021, including a women’s basketball player accepting cash $40 from fans. The violations were first reported Tuesday by Hearst Connecticut Media, which obtained details of them through a Freedom of Information Act request. They included four violations by the women’s basketball program, three by the football program, and one each in men’s soccer, baseball, softball, field hockey and women’s tennis. The athletic training department and the compliance department also were cited. All 15 violations were considered to be Level III “breach of conduct” violations by the university, the least serious category of NCAA violation.

Tennis – Wimbledon – Serena Williams gets wild-card entry for Wimbledon singles
Serena Williams is going to play at Wimbledon this year. The All England Club has announced that Williams was awarded a wild-card entry for singles. Williams has not competed anywhere since getting injured during the first set of her first-round match at the All England Club a year ago. And her name did not appear on the women’s singles entry list released by the grass-court Grand Slam tournament earlier this month. But Williams was among six women given a spot in the singles draw via wild cards. The grass-court Grand Slam tournament begins June 27. Williams has won seven of her 23 major championships there.

Tennis – US Open – US Open lets Russian tennis players in after Wimbledon ban
The U.S. Open will allow tennis players from Russia and Belarus to compete this year despite the ongoing war in Ukraine. That war prompted Wimbledon to ban those athletes. U.S. Tennis Association CEO and Executive Director Lew Sherr tells The Associated Press that the USTA Board decided to let Russians and Belarusians enter the tournament because of “concern about holding the individual athletes accountable for the actions and decisions of their governments.” Sherr said athletes from Russia and Belarus will play at Flushing Meadows under a neutral flag. The U.S. Open starts on Aug. 29.

NFL – Detroit Lions sign Devin Funchess to add depth at tight end
The Detroit Lions are giving Devin Funchess a chance to make a comeback in the NFL. Detroit signed him as a tight end on Tuesday to add depth to a position group led by T.J. Hockenson. Funchess has not played in the league since 2019. Carolina drafted him out of Michigan in the second round of the 2015 draft and he had 21 touchdown receptions over four seasons with the Panthers.

NFL – Bears’ progress at minicamp comes without DE Robert Quinn
Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields and wide receiver Darnell Mooney continued building a passing connection as the team’s mandatory minicamp opened Tuesday, but the defense is trying to get by without no-show pass rusher Robert Quinn. Although coach Matt Eberflus had expressed the belief Quinn would attend the workouts, he was absent after also missing all of the Bears’ offseason voluntary work. Quinn is under contract through 2024.

NFL – Deshaun Watson again denies sexual misconduct claims
Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson says he’s determined to keep fighting to clear his name and insists he never committed sexual misconduct. He stood by previous comments proclaiming his innocence. Watson is facing civil lawsuits from 24 massage therapists in Texas accusing him of sexual assault and harassment. But Watson says he never assaulted, harassed or disrespected anyone. Watson was speaking publicly for the first time since March 25, a week after the Browns signed him to a fully guaranteed $230 million contract despite his complex legal situation. Since then, his legal entanglements have grown with two more women filing lawsuits.

NFL – New Charger Mack making progress during busy offseason
It has been a busy offseason for Khalil Mack since being traded from the Chicago Bears to the Los Angeles Chargers. In addition to becoming familiar with new teammates and getting up to speed on a new defense, the outside linebacker has been rehabbing from last year’s foot surgery. Considering everything that has gone on the past three months, Mack seems pleased with his progress. Mack has spent most of the practices working on the side, but he was participating in the 11-on-11 walkthroughs during the first day of minicamp on Tuesday. He said the rehab process has been smooth so far and that he should be ready for the start of training camp in late July.

NFL – Ex-NFL WR Golden Tate signs with summer baseball team
Former NFL wide receiver is giving baseball another shot. Tate has signed to play for the Port Angeles Lefties of the West Coast League, a summer league for college players. Tate played in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks, Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants. He last played in the NFL in 2020. The 33-year-old played two seasons of college baseball at Notre Dame as an outfielder. He was also twice drafted in the MLB amateur draft in 2007.

Abreu sent a soaring shot over the left-center fence in the first to give the White Sox a 2-0 lead. He hit a line drive in the ninth over a row of hedges beyond the wall in center to give Chicago a four-run cushion. White Sox right-hander Lance Lynn made his season debut, coming back from surgery on his right knee, and gave up three runs on 10 hits over 4 1/3 innings. Lynn had a heated exchange with Chicago third base coach Joe McEwing in the dugout after the second inning.

Yu Darvish pitched a season-high eight innings of five-hit ball, Manny Machado hit a tiebreaking single and Eric Hosmer had a two-run double to cap a three-run eighth inning as the San Diego Padres beat the Chicago Cubs 4-1. Darvish, pitching at Wrigley Field for the first time since the Cubs traded him to the Padres as the centerpiece of a seven-player trade on Dec. 29, 2020, didn’t allow a runner past second base after Yan Gomes hit a home run in the second. The Padres won for the fifth time in their last seven games. The Cubs have lost seven consecutive games, matching their longest skid since Sept. 21-28, 2021.

MLB – Tigers’ Rodriguez on restricted list due to personal matters
Detroit Tigers left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez has been placed on the restricted list. Tigers general manager Al Avila announced that Rodriguez will not rejoin the team due to personal matters. The Tigers signed Rodriguez to a $77 million, five-year contract last November, banking on him to boost a turnaround. He and the team have struggled this season. Rodriguez is 1-3 with a 4.38 ERA in eight starts. The 29-year-old Venezuelan spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Boston Red Sox. He is 65-42 with a 4.17 ERA over his career.

MLB – Donaldson’s 1-game ban upheld by MLB, fine cut to $5,000
Major League Baseball has upheld Josh Donaldson’s one-game suspension, a penalty that was assessed after the New York Yankees third baseman made a remark to White Sox star Tim Anderson about Jackie Robinson that Chicago manager Tony La Russa called racist. A person familiar with the discipline told The Associated Press that MLB special adviser John McHale upheld the penalty after hearing Donaldson’s appeal. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because McHale’s decision was not announced. Donaldson will serve the penalty during the Yankees’ series opener against Tampa Bay on Tuesday night. The fine he received was cut in half to $5,000.

Andrew Wiggins delivered the biggest game yet in his eight-year career with 26 points and 13 rebounds, Klay Thompson scored 21 points, and the Golden State Warriors beat the Boston Celtics 104-94 for a 3-2 NBA Finals lead. Stephen Curry contributed 16 points and eight assists but the all-time 3-point leader’s NBA-record streak of 132 straight postseason games with at least one 3 ended along with his NBA-best run of 233 consecutive games with a 3 between regular season and playoffs combined.  NBA Commissioner Adam Silver did not attend Game 5 because of the league’s health and safety protocols. The league did not say if Silver had tested positive for COVID-19 or been deemed a close contact of someone who had, nor released any details about his health. Part of Silver’s role as commissioner involves handing out the league’s championship trophy, which one team will be awarded either Thursday in Boston or on Sunday in San Francisco.

WNBA – State Department officials meet with Griner’s WNBA team
State Department officials have met with representatives of Brittney Griner’s WNBA team about the Phoenix Mercury star’s months-long detention in Russia and the Biden administration’s efforts to secure her release.  The State Department confirmed the meeting, which involved officials from its specialized office that advocates for hostages and wrongfully detained Americans, but offered no additional details about what was said or who specifically attended. The administration has previously said its working to bring Griner and another American, Michigan corporate security executive Paul Whelan, home from Russia.  Griner was detained on Feb. 17 at an airport in Moscow after Russian authorities said a search of her bag revealed vape cartridges containing a cannabis derivative.

FIFA – CONCACAF – Rapinoe, Morgan back for US for World Cup qualifiers
Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan have been included on the U.S. national soccer team roster for the upcoming CONCACAF W Championship, which will determine four of the region’s teams in the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Rapinoe and Morgan have not been named to a U.S. roster since October as coach Vlatko Andonovski looked at young players in the run-up to qualifying. The United States is the two-time defending World Cup champion. Rapinoe also plays for OL Reign and Morgan’s club team is the San Diego Wave.

Golf – Phil Mickelson not giving up on playing PGA Tour
Phil Mickelson never had such a conservative strategy for the U.S. Open. Of course, he was using his words, not his golf clubs. He stuck to the script and showed restraint amid critical questioning at The Country Club outside of Boston. Mickelson didn’t have much to add on his comments last week when he played his first Saudi-backed LIV Golf event. The PGA Tour has suspended Mickelson for playing in the rival league without permission. He didn’t say whether he would try to play another PGA Tour event. But he says it should be his choice.

Tennis – None of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic in ATP top 2; 1st since ’03
None of the so-called Big Three of men’s tennis is in the No. 1 or No. 2 spots in the ATP rankings. It’s the first time in nearly 20 years that Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic were all no better than No. 3. Daniil Medvedev rose one place to return to No. 1 on Monday. He briefly spent time there earlier this season. Alexander Zverev moved up to a career-best No. 2. Djokovic slid from No. 1 to No. 3. His points for winning the French Open in 2021 dropped off his record on Monday. He lost in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Nadal this year.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homered, Ross Stripling pitched one-hit ball for six innings and the Toronto Blue Jays went on to beat the Detroit Tigers 6-0. The Blue Jays took two of three from Detroit, giving them 13 victories in 17 games. Toronto has the third-best record in the American League, trailing the East-leading New York Yankees in its division and West-leading Houston.

Rangers 8, White Sox 6 – F/12 – Rangers end 12-inning win over White Sox on 7-5 double play
Jonah Heim hit a two-run single in the 12th inning and the Texas Rangers turned a double play on a ball hit to the warning track to end an 8-6 win over the Chicago White Sox. Embattled manager Tony La Russa and the White Sox have lost four of five. This one began with right-hander Michael Kopech leaving with right knee discomfort after 13 pitches and ended with an unusual double play in the 12th. José Abreu struck out looking against Kolby Allard leading off, then Jake Burger hit a fly to the warning track in left. Charlie Culberson caught the ball, then threw out automatic runner Luis Robert trying to tag up and take third.

Yankees 18, Cubs 4 – Carpenter hammers Cubs; 2 HRs, 7 RBIs in Yanks’ 18-4 rout
Matt Carpenter homered twice and tied his career high with seven RBIs, powering the New York Yankees to complete a weekend sweep of the Chicago Cubs with a 18-4 rout for their 11th win in 12 games. The 36-year-old Carpenter was signed on May 26 after spending the first seven weeks at Texas’ Triple-A Round Rock. Carpenter became the second player since 1900 to hit six home runs in his first 10 games for a team after Colorado’s Trevor Story in 2016. Chicago’s six-game losing streak is its longest this year, dropping the Cubs a season-worst 13 games under .500 at 23-36.

NBA – National Basketball Association – 2022 NBA Finals
    Tonight
Boston Celtics at Golden State Warriors, 9:00 p.m.         (Series Tied 2-2)

NBA – With NBA Finals tied at 2, Celtics try to stop Stephen Curry
The Boston Celtics realize they must find an answer to Stephen Curry and do a better job making things difficult for the two-time MVP. Curry scored 43 points in Golden State’s 107-97 victory in Game 4 on Friday night to even the NBA Finals at 2 wins apiece heading into Game 5 back in San Francisco on Monday. Boston coach Ime Udoka is counting on everybody getting involved defensively to put more pressure on Curry all over the floor and also to be more physical with the all-time 3-point leader.

NBA – Green looks to make impact for Warriors even without scoring
When the Golden State Warriors made their fourth-quarter push to get back into the NBA Finals, Draymond Green had the unusual role as spectator. The versatile Green who has been one of the stalwarts of Golden State’s dynasty got pulled in crunch time of Game 4 in what was a and effective decision by coach Steve Kerr. Now with the series shifting back to California tied heading into Game 5, Kerr said he has no concerns about what he’ll get out of Green the rest of the way.

NHL – Avalanche, Lightning set for anticipated Stanley Cup clash
The two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning face the best in the West Colorado Avalanche in the Stanley Cup Final beginning Wednesday in Denver. Tampa Bay is the first team since Wayne Gretzky’s Edmonton Oilers from 1983-85 to make the final in three consecutive years. The Lightning are looking to be the NHL’s first three-peat champions since the New York Islanders won the Cup four times in a row from 1980-83. Colorado’s core led by Nathan MacKinnon used depth and speed to break through to the final for the first time after several disappointing playoff performances. The Avalanche are going for the franchise’s first championship since 2001.

Courtney Vandersloot hit a 3-pointer from the wing with 0.9 seconds left to help the Chicago Sky overcome Sabrina Ionescu’s second career triple-double and beat the New York Liberty 88-86. Ionescu tied the WNBA record for triple doubles with the second of her career when she finished with 27 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists, accomplishing the feat by the end of the third quarter — the fastest in league history. It wasn’t enough for New York (5-9), which had won four of its past five games. Trailing 86-85, Vandersloot took a pass from Candace Parker on the wing and drained the 3. New York had one last chance, but couldn’t get a shot off.

WNBA – Taylor calls for Griner’s release at Hall of Fame induction
Penny Taylor used her induction into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame to call for the release of her former Phoenix Mercury teammate Brittney Griner. Taylor noted it’s been 114 days since the seven-time WNBA All-Star was detained in Russia. Taylor called for President Joe Biden’s help freeing Griner, saying “BG is our family.” Taylor also said the entire global sports community needs to come together and insist that freeing Griner be a priority. The two-time Olympic gold medalist has been detained since Feb. 17. DeLisha Milton-Jones wrapped up her acceptance speech with a call to bring Griner home. DePaul coach Doug Bruno also called for Griner’s release saying, “Enough is enough."

NCAABSB – Notre Dame stuns No. 1 Tennessee 7-3, advances to CWS
Freshman Jack Findlay threw five shutout innings in relief and back-to-back home runs by catcher David LaManna and Jack Brannigan in the seventh sparked Notre Dame to a 7-3 victory over No. 1 overall seed Tennessee in the championship game of the Knoxville Super Regional.  Notre Dame (40-15) will be making just its third College World Series appearance. The Fighting Irish’s other trips came in 1957 and 2002.  Findlay (6-2) worked out of a jam after entering the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with nobody out, a run in and a runner on second, trailing 3-1. Findlay held the Volunteers in check from there, allowing a single and two walks, while striking out four to get the win.

Golf – LIV/PGA – PGA chief slams Saudi-funded league as series of exhibitions
PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan is blasting the Saudi-based LIV Golf league as a series of exhibitions that spends billions to recruit players without getting a return on the investment. He also says players unaware they might face criticism for taking Saudi money are “living under a rock.” They’re his first public comments since he suspended PGA Tour members who signed up for Greg Norman’s new league and played in the first LIV event last week outside London. Monahan spoke during the CBS telecast of the Canadian Open and pointed out that was “pure competition" that creates stars.

Golf – PGA – McIlroy defends Canadian Open title in strong LIV response
Rory McIlroy won the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday and gave the PGA Tour a strong response to the start of the Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational, closing with an 8-under 62 to win a wild race to the finish with Justin Thomas and Tony Finau.  McIlroy finished at 19-under 261 at St. George’s for a two-stroke victory. Finau shot a 64 to finish second alone. Thomas bogeyed the final two holes for a 64 to finish third at 14 under. Justin Rose matched the tournament- and course-record with a 60 — with three eagles and three bogeys — to tie for fourth.

NASCAR – Suarez gets historic win at Sonoma
Daniel Suárez became the first Mexican-born driver to win a NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday on Sonoma Raceway.  The 30-year-old Mexican driver held off Chris Buescher to claim his first victory in his 195th career start.  He also drove his Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet to the third Cup Series victory for this 2-year-old team co-owned by former driver Justin Marks and music star Pitbull. Suárez got past Buescher and took charge on this hilly road course in Northern California wine country early in the final stage. He persevered through a pit stop and a caution to emerge with his lead intact with 23 laps to go.

NASCAR – NASCAR’s preseason Clash returns to LA Coliseum in 2023
NASCAR’s season-opening exhibition Clash race is rolling back to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 2023. NASCAR announced Sunday it will return to the Southern California sports landmark next season after The Clash’s highly successful debut there four months ago.  NASCAR got some of its best reviews in years for the 2022 Clash, which took place on a temporary 0.25-mile track inside the venerable Coliseum.

Boxing – Floyd Mayweather Jr. touched by Hall of Fame induction
Floyd Mayweather Jr. was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in a ceremony that included the past three classes. Mayweather credited his mom, dad and sister for much of his success and said his dad, who trained him, would get his Hall of Fame ring. The pandemic forced the postponement of the previous two induction ceremonies, making 2022 a crowded affair. The ceremony was moved from the Hall of Fame’s home in Canastota, New York, to Turning Stone Resort and Casino in nearby Verona to accommodate the 36 honorees. Former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko was not there. He’s in Ukraine helping his brother, the mayor of Kyiv, but sent a short video.

Max Muncy broke open the game with a three-run homer in the sixth inning after White Sox manager Tony La Russa ordered an intentional walk to Trea Turner with a 1-2 count, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers beat Chicago 11-9. Muncy had five RBIs in his return after missing 11 games with left elbow inflammation. Los Angeles trailed 4-0 before a six-run fifth and was ahead 6-5 when Freddie Freeman hit an RBI single off Bennett Sousa. Sousa bounced an 0-2 slider for a wild pitch that allowed Freeman to take second and La Russa wanted a left-on-left matchup.

Catcher Willson Contreras and the Chicago Cubs avoided an arbitration hearing by agreeing to a one-year contract for $9.625 million. The agreement is at the midpoint between the $10.25 million the 30-year-old Contreras had asked for and the $9 million the Cubs had offered when figures were exchanged. Contreras hit .237 with 21 homers and 57 RBIs in 128 games last season. He led National League catchers in assists for the third time. The two-time All-Star is batting .277 with 10 homers and 23 RBIs this season.

NBA – Curry’s diagnosis for Game 4 of finals: ‘I’m going to play’
Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry says there’s no doubt that he’ll play in Game 4 of the NBA Finals against Boston. The two-time NBA MVP injured his ankle late in Game 3. Boston won 116-100 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Curry says the injury is the same one he sustained in a late-season game against the Celtics. He missed the last 12 games of the regular season, but he says this injury isn’t as bad. Game 4 is in Boston on Friday night before the series returns to San Francisco.

Maternal grandfather Tom Curtis was an All-America defensive back for the Wolverines in 1969. Carr says he always planned to leave the state for college and is excited about Marcus Freeman’s program and Tommy Rees’ offense at Notre Dame.

Golf – LIV/PGA – PGA Tour says Saudi-paid players no longer eligible for tour
The PGA Tour says members who are playing in the Saudi-funded league in London are no longer eligible to play tour events. Commissioner Jay Monahan sent a memo indicating the sanctions against Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and 15 other players. The memo went out a short time after the LIV Golf Invitational outside London began with a 48-player field. The decision includes the Presidents Cup. Monahan says even if players resigned their membership, they are not eligible as nonmembers to get sponsor exemptions to tournaments. The USGA already said players can still play the U.S. Open next week. LIV Golf is run by Greg Norman and funded by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. It responded to the PGA Tour’s decision by calling it vindictive and divisive.

Golf – PGA – Clark leads in Toronto
Wyndham Clark started the week with a late charge to play his way into the U.S. Open in a qualifier, and then he stayed hot Thursday in the RBC Canadian Open for a 7-under 63 to take the first-round lead.  Clark opened with five birdies in nine holes and kept bogeys off his card at St. George’s Golf and Country Club for the third round of his PGA Tour career at 63 or lower.  Matt Fitzpatrick was a stroke back, and Doug Ghim and Harold Varner III followed at 65.

Tennis – Wimbledon – Wimbledon record prize money at full-capacity tournament
Wimbledon will offer a record total of $50.5 million in player compensation but the singles champions will receive less than the pre-pandemic amount. The All England Club says prize money excluding per diems totals a record $48.8 million. The men’s and women’s singles winners will each earn $2.5 million, 14.9% less than in 2019. The overall prize money is an 11% increase over last year, when capacity was reduced because of coronavirus restrictions, and a 5.4% increase over 2019. The oldest Grand Slam tournament begins June 27 and organizers highlighted plans for the grass-court competition to be at full capacity for the first time in three years.

Allen tested positive for two prohibited substances after finishing first at a low-level event in California last May. Evidence for the case came from a criminal case against Eric Lira. He was charged under the Rodchenkov Antidoping Act, which was passed to go after people and organizations that fund and promote international doping schemes.

NFL – State lawmakers table measure aimed at luring Commanders to Virginia
The Virginia General Assembly is tabling for the year legislation intended to lure the Washington Commanders to Virginia. That’s according to a top state lawmaker who sponsored one version of the legislation.  Democratic Senate Majority Leader Dick Saslaw said in a brief interview that there were too many issues to be resolved and controversies surrounding the NFL team for the legislation to proceed. He says it could be reintroduced next year.  The team did not immediately respond to a request for comment.  The development came a day after an assistant coach for the team issued an apology for a comparison he made on social media between the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and the protests in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd.

    MLB – Major League Baseball
    Yesterday
Detroit Tigers 3, Pittsburgh Pirates 1
Chicago Cubs at Baltimore Orioles, PPD
Los Angeles Dodgers 4, Chicago White Sox 1

Tigers 3, Pirates 1 – Another strong start by Faedo propels Tigers by Pirates 3-1
Miguel Cabrera hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning and the Detroit Tigers completed a two-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 3-1 victory. Harold Castro led off the eighth with a single against Wil Crowe and Jonathan Schoop followed with a bloop single to shallow center. Cabrera stepped in and delivered a sharp single up the middle, scoring Castro from second as Reynolds’ throw home sailed well up the first-base line. Daz Cameron doubled and tripled while driving in two runs for Detroit. Alex Faedo went 5 innings, only allowing 1 run on three hits, while striking out 7. Pittsburgh rookie Jack Suwinski hit his seventh home run for the Pirates.

Cubs at Orioles, PPD, Rain – Cubs-Orioles postponed by rain; makeup set for Aug. 18
The interleague game between the Chicago Cubs and Baltimore Orioles was postponed by a relentless rain shower that started shortly before the scheduled start and never let up. Wednesday’s ill-fated finale of the two-game series will be made up Aug. 18, previously an off day for both teams. This was slated to be Chicago’s only visit to Baltimore in 2022, but now the Cubs will have to make a detour late this summer in an effort to earn a delayed split. The Cubs wrap a three-game set in Washington on Aug. 17, and the Orioles will be coming off a series in Toronto before hosting Boston on the 19th.

Dodgers 4, White Sox 1 – Gonsolin, Smith, Bellinger lead Dodgers over White Sox 4-1
Tony Gonsolin improved to 7-0, tossing three-hit ball over six innings, and Will Smith and Cody Bellinger homered early to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 4-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Smith hit a two-run drive in the first inning, and Bellinger made it 3-0 when he connected leading off the second against Johnny Cueto. That was all Gonsolin needed. The 28-year-old right-hander struck out five and walked one while lowering his National League-best ERA to 1.58. The only run he allowed was when Jake Burger homered leading off the fifth. Cueto dropped his third straight start. The two-time All-Star went six innings, allowing three runs and four hits, and Chicago’s three-game win streak ended.

Jaylen Brown scored 27 points, Jayson Tatum added 26 and the Boston Celtics beat back another third-quarter onslaught by the Golden State Warriors in a 116-100 victory that gave them a 2-1 lead in the NBA Finals. Marcus Smart added 24 points. Stephen Curry led Golden State with 31 points and six 3-pointers. He had 15 points in a 33-25 third quarter by the Warriors but was hurt late in the fourth after Al Horford rolled into his leg on a loose ball. It was similar to a play during the regular season in which Smart dove into Curry’s legs while chasing a loose ball.

NBA – Net change: Warriors find Boston baskets set too high
The Golden State Warriors arrived at the TD Garden for Game 3 of the NBA Finals to find that the basket they were shooting at in warmups was the wrong height. A 10-foot wooden pole was brought in to measure, and it confirmed that the basket was a couple of inches too high. It was quickly adjusted. Warriors coach Steve Kerr said during his pregame media availability that he wasn’t aware of the issue, but it wasn’t uncommon. Kerr then took the opportunity to needle the league for the finals’ late start times, saying: “It’s a good thing the game starts at midnight. We’ll have plenty of time to fix it.”

Brionna Jones had 18 points and nine rebounds, Jonquel Jones added 16 points and nine rebounds, and the Connecticut Sun beat the Indiana Fever 88-69 for their fourth straight victory. DeWanna Bonner scored 12 points and Alyssa Thomas had 11 points, nine rebounds and five assists for Connecticut (10-3). DiJonai Carrington went 5 of 5 from the floor for the second straight game and finished with 12 points. Bonner moved into a tie for 17th in WNBA history for 3-pointers after a make early in the third quarter. NaLyssa Smith led Indiana with a season-high 19 points. Danielle Robinson added 12 points and Queen Egbo had 10. The Fever shot just 37.5% from the field, including 3 of 21 from distance.

Mystics 84, Sky 82 – Cloud makes go-ahead free throw, Mystics hold off Sky 84-82
Ariel Atkins scored 19 points, Natasha Cloud made two free throws with six seconds left and the Washington Mystics held off the Chicago Sky 84-82 to avenge a series loss Sunday. Washington closed the first half on an 11-3 run to take a 45-40 lead and extended it to 57-42 after scoring 12 of the opening 14 points of the third. But the Mystics were held to just 15 points in the fourth as Chicago battled back. Chicago’s Candace Parker had a shot blocked but got her own rebound and converted a three-point play with 27.9 to tie it at 82. Cloud dribbled down the clock, drove to the basket and was fouled before making two free throws. Chicago got it inside to Parker, but her left-handed layup didn’t hit the rim.

Nassar – Simone Biles, other women seek $1B-plus from FBI over Nassar
Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles and dozens of other women who say they were sexually assaulted by Larry Nassar are seeking more than $1 billion from the FBI for failing to stop the sports doctor. There’s no dispute that FBI agents in 2015 knew that Nassar was accused of assaulting gymnasts. But the agents failed to act, leaving Nassar free to continue to target young women and girls for more than a year. Individual lawsuits could follow the tort claims filed Wednesday. Claimants include Biles, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney, all Olympic gold medalists. An email seeking comment was sent to the FBI. In remarks to Congress last year, FBI Director Christopher Wray acknowledged major mistakes.

NCAATF – Notre Dame’s Jacobs wins 10K title at NCAA championships
Notre Dame junior Dylan Jacobs overcame a fall to win the 10,000 meters at the opening day of the NCAA Track and Field Championships on Wednesday. Jacobs took the lead on the final lap and held off runner-up Alex Maier of Oklahoma State to cross the finish line in 28 minutes, 12.32 seconds. Northern Arizona’s Abdihamid Nur was third. Southeast Missouri State senior Logan Blomquist won the hammer with a personal best of 240 feet, 8 inches (73.37 meters) in the final round. Tennessee freshman Wayne Pinnock won the men’s long jump at 26-3 (8 meters). Texas senior Adrian Piperi won the shot put at 70-7 1/4 (21.52 meters).

NFL – Bears had workout canceled for violating NFL contact rules
Chicago Bears coach Matt Eberflus says the team had to cancel an offseason workout this week because they violated NFL rules by having live contact in a session last month. Eberflus said the contact that occurred was because of overzealous players and not the team’s practice structure. He said neither he nor the organization was fined, and the Bears found out Monday evening that Tuesday’s OTA session was canceled. The Bears were back on the field on Wednesday.

  • Skubal shines again in Tigers win over Pirates – Wednesday Morning Sports Update

    MLB – Major League Baseball
    Last Night
Detroit Tigers 5, Pittsburgh Pirates 3
Baltimore Orioles 9, Chicago Cubs 3
Chicago White Sox 4, Los Angeles Dodgers 0

Tigers 5, Pirates 3 – Rain man: Skubal wins 4th straight as Tigers top Pirates 5-3
Tarik Skubal pitched seven steady innings to win his fourth straight decision and Harold Castro hit a two-run single to lead the Detroit Tigers to a rain-delayed 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. After the start was pushed back more than two hours, Skubal gave up three runs and six hits while striking out nine and walking one. The left-hander has worked a career-high seven innings in three consecutive outings and is 4-0 with a 1.60 ERA in his last seven starts. Castro’s hit, a liner up the middle, capped a three-run fourth that put the Tigers in front 4-1. Rookie Spencer Torkelson drove in the first run with a double.

Orioles 9, Cubs 3 – Orioles hit 5 home runs, cruise past Cubs 9-3
Cedric Mullins and Trey Mancini hit successive homers, sparking a power surge that carried the Baltimore Orioles past the Chicago Cubs 9-3. Jorge Mateo, Austin Hays and Ramón Urías also connected for the Orioles, who beat the Cubs for the first time in seven tries since 2008. Reliever Bryan Baker earned the win after allowing one run and one hit over 1 1/3 innings. Christopher Morel homered on the game’s first pitch off rookie Kyle Bradish and has reached base safely in 21 consecutive games to begin his career, extending his Cubs’ record. Morel also had an RBI triple in the sixth.

White Sox 4, Dodgers 0 – Kopech, Pollock lead White Sox to 4-0 win over Dodgers
Michael Kopech pitched six innings of one-hit ball, pinch-hitter AJ Pollock delivered a two-run double against his former team and the Chicago White Sox beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0. Pollock’s clutch swing off the bench sparked a four-run sixth that sent the White Sox to their third consecutive victory. It was the fourth time this season Kopech worked at least five innings and limited an opponent to one hit. The right-hander struck out eight and walked one, lowering his ERA to 1.94. The NL West-leading Dodgers dropped their third straight.

MLB – Angels fire manager Joe Maddon amid 12-game losing streak
The Los Angeles Angels have fired manager Joe Maddon with the team mired in a 12-game losing streak. Third base coach Phil Nevin will be the Angels’ interim manager when they host Boston on Tuesday night. Maddon went 130-148 with the Angels, who hired him before the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season. After finishing with losing records in Maddon’s first two seasons, the Angels were off to a strong 27-17 start before their current losing streak began. They are one loss shy of tying the longest skid in franchise history.

Tampa Bay Lightning 4, New York Rangers 1                       (Series tied 2-2)

Lightning 4, Rangers 1 – Lightning beat Rangers 4-1 in Game 4 to even East final
Nikita Kucherov scored on a breakaway and Andrei Vasilevskiy had 33 saves , helping the Tampa Bay Lightning shut down the New York Rangers 4-1 and even the NHL’s Eastern Conference final at two games apiece. Kucherov took a pass from Ondrej Palat in the middle of the ice and skated in on goaltender Igor Shesterkin to give the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions a two-goal lead just over 13 minutes into the second period. Palat, Pat Maroon and Steven Stamkos also scored for the Lightning, who have rebounded from losing the first two games of the series on the road to keep their bid to become the first team in nearly 40 years to win three consecutive Stanley Cup titles alive. Game 5 is Thursday night at Madison Square Garden.

WNBA – Los Angeles Sparks fire coach and GM Derek Fisher
The Los Angeles Sparks have fired head coach and general manager Derek Fisher the team announced. Fisher took over the team before the 2019 season and became the GM a year later. He finished his career with a 54-46 record as coach. The Sparks missed the playoffs last season for the first time since 2011 and bolstered their roster by adding All-Star Liz Cambage in the offseason. They had a difficult schedule to start the season with nine of their first 12 games on the road and are 5-7.

WNBA – Griner’s fate tangled up with other American held in Russia
Brittney Griner is easily the most prominent American locked up by a foreign country. But the WNBA star’s case is tangled up with that of another prisoner few Americans have ever heard of. Paul Whelan has been held in Russia since his December 2018 arrest on espionage charges he and the U.S. government say are false. He was left out of a prisoner exchange in April that brought home yet another detainee, Marine veteran Trevor Reed. That resolution escalates pressure on the Biden administration to avoid a repeat scenario of another one-for-one swap that does not include Whelan.

Golf – LIV – Dustin Johnson quits PGA membership to play in Saudi league
Two-time major winner Dustin Johnson says he has resigned his PGA Tour membership to participate in the new golf series backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. The first LIV Golf Invitational, which offers $25 million in prize money, is taking place outside London starting Thursday. Johnson says he “had to think long and hard” about leaving the PGA Tour, seemingly ending his hopes of competing in the Ryder Cup for the United States. Johnson is No. 15 in the world, the highest-ranked player in the field.

Golf – Tiger Woods says his leg not ready and he won’t play US Open
Tiger Woods has pulled out of the U.S. Open and says his body "needs more time to get stronger for major championship golf.” He said he hopes to be ready to play in a charity pro-am event in Ireland ahead of the British Open at St. Andrews in July. The U.S. Open is next week at The Country Club at Brookline outside of Boston. Woods made a surprise return to golf at the Masters just 14 months after he broke bones in his right leg and ankle in a car crash. He later played the PGA Championship at Southern Hills but withdrew after the third round. Woods has won the U.S. Open three times, most recently in 2008.

Golf – US Open to accept Mickelson and all eligible players
Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and other players competing in the Saudi-funded rival golf league are free to play the U.S. Open next week. That was always expected but confirmed Tuesday by the USGA. The USGA says if a player earned his way into the the U.S. Open, should that be taken away because he is playing a different league? It felt the answer was no. CEO Mike Whan says more than 9,000 people signed up for the U.S. Open and the USGA is not in the business of policing what they stand for.

NFL – Rodgers unsure how long he will play beyond this season
Aaron Rodgers says he’s unsure how much longer he will keep playing football. But he’s definitive about at least one element of his playing future. The four-time MVP quarterback expects to retire as a Green Bay Packer. That scenario seemed uncertain when Rodgers skipped the Packers mandatory minicamp last year in a standoff with team officials. That relationship has since improved enough that Rodgers signed a contract extension with the Packers after producing his second straight MVP season. Rodgers said Tuesday at the Packers minicamp that he doesn’t know yet whether he will play beyond this upcoming season.

Olympics – Figure Skating – Figure skating minimum age rises to 17 before 2026 Olympics
No 15-year-old figure skaters will be allowed to compete at the 2026 Olympics following the controversy surrounding Russian national champion Kamila Valieva at this year’s Beijing Games. A new age limit for figure skaters at senior international events has been passed by the International Skating Union that will raise the minimum age to 17 before the next Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. The limit will be phased in with 16-year-olds allowed to compete in the 2023-24 season. It will then rise to 17 for the season before the Olympics.

NCAASFB – Coaches: Doubleheaders in WCWS semis threaten player safety
Oklahoma bounced back from losing a Women’s College World Series semifinal to UCLA on Monday, dominating the Bruins in a game that started 30 minutes after the first one. Oklahoma coach Patty Gasso said the turnaround should not have been so quick. Gasso called it a player safety issue. She likes that the NCAA’s Division I Competition Oversight Committee added a day between the semifinals and the finals in changes made before this season, but she would give it up for time between semifinal games.

NHL – Bruins fire coach Bruce Cassidy after 1st-round playoff exit
The Boston Bruins have fired coach Bruce Cassidy several weeks after losing in the first round of the playoffs. General manager Don Sweeney says the search for a replacement will begin immediately. Boston made the playoffs in each of Cassidy’s six seasons behind the bench. He coached the Bruins within one victory of the Stanley Cup in 2019. Cassidy immediately becomes a top candidate for vacancies in Philadelphia, Chicago, Winnipeg, Vegas and Detroit and any others that may now come open. The Bruins are expected to be without first-line left winger Brad Marchand and top defenseman Charlie McAvoy for at least the first two months of next season.   Cassidy was previously an assistant coach with the Chicago Blackhawks, he was also a head coach of the Grand Rapids Griffins.

NHL – Jets’ Kyle Connor wins Lady Byng for gentlemanly conduct
Winnipeg Jets forward Kyle Connor has won the Lady Byng Trophy, given to the NHL’s most gentlemanly player. Connor tied for the second-fewest number of minor penalties during the regular season. He was penalized just twice in over 1,700 minutes of ice time that included regular short-handed shifts and matchups against top offensive opponents. It’s his first Lady Byng honor. Last year’s winner, Jaccob Slavin of Carolina, was second in voting by the Professional Hockey Writer Association. Minnesota defenseman Jared Spurgeon was third.

Soccer – Canada men back at practice after meeting with federation
Canada Soccer says its World Cup-bound men’s team has returned to practice after refusing to play in an exhibition match against Panama because of strained labor negotiations. The nation’s governing body announced on social media on Monday that the two sides had met the night before. The team returned to practice and future meetings were scheduled. Canada is set to play Curacao at Vancouver’s BC Place on Thursday in the CONCACAF National League.

NFL – Denver Broncos sale could come as early as this month
The Denver Broncos could have a new owner as soon as this month in what’s expected to be the most expensive deal in sports history at around $4.5 billion. A second round of bids for the franchise was due Monday from prospective buyers. The Pat Bowlen Trust will have to accept the winning bid, and NFL owners will need to approve the sale of the team that’s been in the Bowlen family for nearly four decades.

NFL – Romeo Crennel retires after almost 40 years as NFL coach
Romeo Crennel announced his retirement Monday, ending a 39-year NFL coaching career that included five Super Bowl titles. Crennel, spent the past eight seasons with the Houston Texans. He was the team’s defensive coordinator from 2014-16 and assistant head coach from 2017-19. In 2020 he was the associate head coach before becoming the interim head coach after coach Bill O’Brien was fired after just four games.

NFL – All-Pro Aaron Donald returning to LA Rams with a big raise
All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald is getting a big raise to stay with the Los Angeles Rams under a reworked contract through 2024. The team didn’t disclose terms of the new deal, but the NFL Network reported Donald is getting a $40 million raise that will make him the highest-paid defensive player in the league. Donald was already under contract for the next three seasons, but he openly contemplated retirement after he won his first ring with the Rams in February. Instead, the seven-time All-Pro will be back to torment offenses at the heart of Los Angeles’ defense.

NFL – Browns’ Watson named in 24th lawsuit by massage therapists
A 24th woman has filed a civil lawsuit alleging sexual misconduct by Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, who is also awaiting possible discipline from the NFL. The latest lawsuit was filed in Houston by attorney Tony Buzbee, who is representing all 24 women. Buzbee says in a statement that the women “continue to stand firm for what is right." Watson’s attorney Rusty Hardin said he could not immediately comment on the latest lawsuit. Hardin has repeatedly said Watson has done nothing wrong. Watson has been accused by massage therapists of harassing, assaulting or touching them during appointments and the latest lawsuit makes similar allegations.

Usher went 4 for 5 with four RBIs and Masterman added three RBIs, including his fourth homer of the regional. Michigan started the game with three straight doubles to take a 2-0 lead, but Louisville scored seven runs with two outs in the bottom of the first.

Golf – LIV – Mickelson joins Saud-funded league
Phil Mickelson is ending his 4-month hiatus from competitive golf and is joining the Saudi-funded rival league. Mickelson was the last big name added to the 48-man field for the LIV Golf Invitational outside London that starts Friday.  The six-time major champion was the chief recruiter for the Saudi league. But it appeared to backfire when he was quoted as accusing the PGA Tour of “obnoxious greed.” He also says while he’s aware of Saudi Arabia’s human rights record, it would be worth it to join if it meant having leverage against the PGA Tour.  Mickelson says he’ll still play the majors.

Golf – Jack Nicklaus to become honorary citizen of St. Andrews
Jack Nicklaus is returning to St. Andrews in July to become an honorary citizen. And this time he’ll be joining some exclusive company. The honor from the town council has been awarded to only two other American citizens. One was amateur great Bobby Jones in 1958. The other was Benjamin Franklin in 1759. Nicklaus won two of his three British Open titles at St. Andrews. He loves the Old Course so much that he chose St. Andrews in 2005 to play in his 164th and final major championship. Nicklaus says he won’t be playing in the Champions Challenge exhibition.

The 1976 women’s 4×100 freestyle relay swimming team, anchored by Shirley Babashoff in its stunning upset over the East Germans, and the 2002 men’s Paralympic sled hockey team also were voted into the hall by a mix of Olympic and Paralympic athletes, media and administrators and fans.
