Josh Donaldson hit a 10th-inning sacrifice fly, and the New York Yankees came from behind twice to beat the Detroit Tigers 5-4 to reach the one-third mark of the season at 39-15, the best in the major leagues in 21 years. Joey Gallo’s two-run homer in the fifth off overcame an early deficit and the Yankees won for the 10th time in 12 games, completing a three-game sweep of the Tigers and extending their winning streak to six.

White Sox 6, Rays 5 – Burger, Grandal key early RBIs, White Sox hold off Rays 6-5
Jake Burger had a key hit for the second consecutive day and the Chicago White Sox hung on to a large early lead to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-5. Burger had a two-run double during Chicago’s four-run first, and Yasmani Grandal drove in two more on a check-swing opposite-field single. The Rays got within a run with a four-run sixth inning, including a two-run homer from Mike Zunino. White Sox starter Lucas Giolito gave up five runs, two earned, and eight hits over six innings. Liam Hendriks worked the ninth for his 16th save in 19 chances. Yarbrough allowed six runs and eight hits over 68 pitches in 1 2/3 innings.

Cardinals 5, Cubs 3 – F/11 – Cards rally past Cubs 5-3 in 11 innings, take rubber game
Juan Yepez singled home automatic runner Nolan Gorman to lead off the 11th, Brendan Donovan doubled in an insurance run and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 5-3. Yepez lined his tiebreaking hit and Donovan delivered off Daniel Norris (0-4), who had had pitched a perfect 10th. Genesis Cabrera (3-1) tossed four innings in relief of Adam Wainwright, and allowed a run on two hits. St. Louis won for the sixth time in eight games and took the rubber match of a five-game series. The Cardinals tied it at 3 in the 9th after Chicago broke through for a 3-2 lead in the 8th.

Stephen Curry scored 29 points, Jordan Poole connected from just inside of midcourt to cap a huge third-quarter run and the Golden State Warriors evened the NBA Finals at a game apiece by beating the Boston Celtics 107-88 on Sunday night. Poole finished with 17 for the Warriors, who outscored Boston 35-14 in the third quarter to turn a two-point halftime lead into a 23-point edge. Jayson Tatum scored 21 of his 28 points in the first half for Boston. Jaylen Brown added 17 for the Celtics.

Lightning 3, Rangers 2 – Palat scores late, Lightning beat Rangers 3-2 in Game 3
Ondrej Palat scored with 42 seconds left and the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning beat the New York Rangers 3-2 on Sunday to cut their deficit in the Eastern Conference finals to 2-1. Palat’s goal, off a nifty pass from Nikita Kucherov, capped a comeback that began after Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider scored power-play goals in a span of just over two minutes in the second period to put the Rangers up 2-0. Facing the prospect of falling behind 3-0, the Lightning rallied with Kucherov scoring on the power play in the second period and Steven Stamkos tying it early in the third. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 28 saves for the Lightning. Game 4 is Tuesday night in Tampa.

Nia Coffey had 16 points and 10 rebounds — her second double-double of the season and third in her six-year career — Rhyne Howard also scored 16 points and the Atlanta Dream beat the Indiana Fever 75-66. Aari McDonald scored 12 points and Cheyenne Parker added 11 for the Dream (7-4). Kelsey Mitchell hit a pull-up jumper for Indiana (3-10) to open the scoring but Parker and Erica Wheeler made back-to-back baskets to give the Dream the lead for good with 8:27 left in the first quarter. Atlanta took a 17-point lead into the fourth. Mitchell hit three 3-pointers and led the Fever with 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting. The rest of the Indiana players shot just 30.8% (16 of 52) from the field.

Sky 91, Mystics 82 – Meesseman, Parker lead Sky past short-handed Mystics 91-82
Emma Meesseman scored 13 points with six assists, five steals and four rebounds against her old team, Candace Parker had a double-double and the Chicago Sky defeated the Washington Mystics 91-82. The Sky took control in the third-quarter, out-scoring the Mystics 31-22 . Kahleah Copper led the Sky with 15 points, Parker was four assists shy of a triple double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Washington hopes to have head coach Mike Thibault and assistant coach Shelley Patterson back after they missed the game due to health and safety protocols. Mystics’ leading scorer Elena Delle Donne sat out the game to rest. Tiana Hawkins had 21 points off the bench for Washington.

IndyCar – Power gives Penske, Chevrolet win in final Belle Isle race
Will Power closed the Belle Isle era with a Team Penske victory on Sunday by winning the final Detroit Grand Prix on the island park to reclaim the IndyCar points lead. Power held off Alexander Rossi in the closing laps to earn his first win of the season. All three Team Penske drivers now have a win through seven IndyCar races this season. The race will return to its original downtown street course layout in 2023. The Power win was a celebration for team owner Roger Penske, a longtime Detroit resident and promoter of the race.

NCAABSB – Notre Dame edges Texas Tech 2-1 to earn Super Regional berth
Jack Findlay got the final four outs, surviving a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Notre Dame won the Statesboro Regional with a 2-1 victory over Texas Tech. The Fighting Irish (38-14), the No. 2 seed in the regional, beat third-seed Texas Tech twice by a run and No. 16 overall seed and tourney host Georgia Southern 6-4 in winning a berth in the Super Regionals. Notre Dame took a 1-0 in the third when Spencer Myers doubled and scored on Ryan Cole’s single to left. The Irish scored again in the fourth when Zack Prajzner doubled and scored on a two-out single by Cole.

NCAABSB – Louisville pounds Michigan 20-1 to force Monday finale
Ben Metzinger hit two home-runs and a double, driving in five runs, to power Louisville to a 20-1 romp over Michigan in the Louisville Regional, forcing a Monday showdown for a Super Regional berth. The Cardinals took control early with a four-run first inning. Levi Usher had a two-run single after two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out. Logan Beard added a two-out two-run single. Louisville added three more runs in the second on Metzinger’s first homer — a two-run shot — and Cameron Masterman’s RBI double.

Tennis – French Open – Nadal overcome foot, Ruud for 14th French Open title
Rafael Nadal has captured his 22nd Grand Slam title and 14th French Open championship by whipping Casper Ruud, 6-3, 6-3, 6-0. At 36, Nadal is the oldest title winner in the history of the event. Ruud had a 3-1 lead in the second set and didn’t win another game, with Nadal taking the last 11 and finishing with 37 winners with just 16 unforced errors. But Nadal said his painful left foot was numbed by multiple injections to two nerves during the tournament. He admitted after the final that at any other tournament, he wouldn’t have continued playing under extreme physical conditions. The foot has been bothering him for two years, yet he’s now threatening to complete a calendar Grand Slam. Nadal said he will try some new treatments over the next week to see whether that might allow him to enter Wimbledon this month.

Golf – PGA – Horschel’s big eagle secures a big win at the Memorial
Billy Horschel made an eagle putt on the 15th hole that all but secured his win in the Memorial at Muirfield Village. Horschel shot a 72 and won by four shots over Aaron Wise. Horschel’s eagle putt from just inside 55 feet had the perfect line and perfect speed, bending left and dropping in the left side of the cup as he stretched out both arms in a quiet, disbelieving celebration. Horschel finished at 13-under 275 and won $2.16 million, the largest paycheck of his career.

Golf – LPGA – Lee wins record prize in Major
Minjee Lee won the U.S. Women’s Open by four strokes over Mina Harigae at Pine Needles to earn $1.8 million, the largest payout in the history of women’s golf. Lee closed with an even-par 71 to finish at 13-under 271 after the Australian flirted with the tournament record of 16 under set by Juli Inkster in 1999 at Old Waverly.  Harigae shot a 72 for her best finish in a major and a check of slightly more than $1 million.

Golf – Champions – Kelly beats Triplett in playoff
Jerry Kelly birdied the first playoff hole to beat Kirk Triplett and win the PGA Tour Champions’ Principal Charity Classic.  Kelly hit his approach to 4 feet on the par-4 18th to set up the winning putt. The 55-year-old from Wisconsin has nine victories on the 50-and-over tour after winning three times on the PGA Tour. Kelly and Triplett each shot 5-under 67 to finish at 18-under 198, two strokes ahead of Steven Alker and Hall of Famer Bernhard Langer.

NASCAR – Logano wins in OT
Joey Logano jockeyed for the lead with Kyle Busch in overtime before winning the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race at World Wide Technology Raceway. Logano moved ahead of Busch for good just before the white flag flew, giving Team Penske its second major win of the day. Penske won the IndyCar race with Will Power earlier in the day in Detroit. Kurt Busch finished third with Logano’s teammate, Ryan Blaney, fourth and Aric Almirola in fifth.

FIFA – USA Soccer – Macario out of Women’s World Cup qualifiers with ACL injury
U.S. national team forward Catarina Macario injured her the anterior cruciate ligament in a match with French club team Lyon and will miss World Cup qualifying next month. Macario was injured 13 minutes into Lyon’s season finale on Wednesday, a 4-0 victory over Issy. The 22-year-old was Lyon’s top scorer this season with 23 goals in 35 matches across all competitions. The injury means she’ll miss the CONCACAF W Championships next month in Mexico, which determine the region’s World Cup teams.

FIFA – Ukraine’s World Cup quest ends with loss to Wales amid war
Ukraine has missed out on qualifying for the World Cup after the war-disrupted team lost 1-0 to Wales in the European playoff final for the FIFA soccer showpiece. Andriy Yarmolenko inadvertently headed the ball into his own net while trying to clear Wales captain Gareth Bale’s first-half free kick. This was an agonizing end to Ukraine’s emotionally charged mission to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar while remaining under invasion by Russia. Wales will head to a first World Cup in 64 years and will open against the United States on Nov. 21 before playing Iran and England.

Tigers 3, Twins 2 – Daz Cameron’s HR in 8th lifts surging Tigers past Twins 3-2
Daz Cameron hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning and the surging Detroit Tigers held on to beat the slumping Minnesota Twins 3-2. Cameron’s 416-foot shot to left-center came off Emilio Pagan. Alex Lange gave up two walks and struck out one in the pivotal eighth inning and Gregory Soto earned his 10th save. AL Central-leading Minnesota has lost seven of 10 games and is still the division’s only team with a winning record. The fourth-place Tigers have won seven of their last nine games after a poor start this season.

Blue Jays 8 White Sox 3 – Manoah sharp as Blue Jays beat White Sox, win 8th straight
Alek Manoah pitched into the eighth inning, Teoscar Hernández homered and the Toronto Blue Jays extended their winning streak to eight games by beating the Chicago White Sox 8-3. Santiago Espinal had three hits and three RBIs as the surging Blue Jays won for the 12th time in 15 games. Chicago was swept in the three-game series and has lost six of eight. Manoah allowed three runs and six hits, walked one and struck out five in 7 2/3 innings. He’s 9-0 with a 2.12 ERA in 13 career home starts.

Cubs 7, Cardinals 5 – Schwindel, Contreras and Happ homer as Cubs top Cards 7-5
Frank Schwindel launched a long solo homer and doubled among his three hits and the Chicago Cubs topped the St. Louis Cardinals 7-5 for their third straight victory. Willson Contreras went deep for the third time in four games and Ian Happ also homered to help Chicago end the Cardinals’ three-game winning streak. St. Louis has also won five in a row at Wrigley Field dating to last July. Paul Goldschmidt doubled to extend his hitting streak to 24 games and reached safely for a career-best 38th consecutive game. Keegan Thompson allowed three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings for a win in his fourth straight outing.

Jaylen Brown fueled a comeback charge and scored 24 points, Al Horford hit six 3-pointers and the Boston Celtics rode the most lopsided fourth quarter in NBA Finals history to a 120-108 victory over the Golden State Warriors in Game 1. Horford finished with 26 points and the Celtics outscored the Warriors 40-16 in the final 12 minutes after trailing by 15 points late in the third quarter. Boston made its first seven tries from long distance in the fourth and wound up 9 of 12 beyond the arc over the final 12 minutes as almost everybody got involved in the 3-point flurry.

NBA – Silver says NBA likes ‘parity of opportunity’ for its teams
Over the last three seasons, six franchises have reached the NBA Finals. The league has seen five Eastern Conference champions in the last five seasons. This will be the fourth consecutive year that the team which hoists the trophy won’t be the same as the one who did the year before. Adam Silver likes all these numbers. The NBA Commissioner, in his annual pre-NBA Finals address Thursday night held just before Game 1 of the series between the Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics, repeated his familiar refrain that he doesn’t care who wins. But he also sees the value in some unpredictability from one year to the next as far as which teams make it to the title round.

Nazem Kadri had three assists in a 2:04 span in the second period, backup Pavel Francouz stopped 24 shots for his second career playoff shutout and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-0 on Thursday night to take a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference finals. The Avalanche broke through in the second after a scoreless opening period that featured something rarely seen so far in this series — defense. Artturi Lehkonen and Josh Manson scored 15 seconds apart to get things going in the second, with Mikko Rantanen adding another on Kadri’s third assist. Nathan MacKinnon scored late in the third. Game 3 is Saturday in Edmonton.

NHL – Flames’ Sutter wins Jack Adams as NHL coach of the year
Darryl Sutter of the Calgary Flames is this season’s recipient of the Jack Adams Award as the NHL’s top head coach.  Sutter oversaw the biggest one-year improvement by any team in the league guiding the Flames to the Pacific Division title a year after they missed the playoffs.  Sutter received 54 first-place votes to beat Florida’s Andrew Brunette and New York Rangers coach Gerard Gallant for the honor.

WNBA – Griner receiving, answering WNBA players’ emails
Brittney Griner has been able to receive emails and letters from WNBA players through an account Griner’s agent set up to allow them to communicate with her.  The emails are printed out and delivered sporadically in bunches to Griner by her lawyers after being vetted by Russian officials. Griner doesn’t have access to email. She’ll either write a response on paper and her lawyers will take a photo of it or she’ll dictate a response.  The two-time Olympic gold medalist has been detained in Russia for more than 100 days after vape cartridges containing oil derived from cannabis were allegedly found in her luggage at an airport near Moscow.

Tennis – French Open – Gauff to face Swiatek in final
It will be top-ranked Iga Swiatek against American Coco Gauff for the French Open women’s singles title on Saturday. Swiatek won her 34th straight match today, dominating Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 6-1. Gauff has reached her first Grand Slam final by beating Martina Trevisan of Italy 6-3, 6-1.

NCAAFB – CFP board chair: New format ideally in place by June 2023
The university leaders who oversee the College Football Playoff want the next format for determining a champion settled by this time next year. Mississippi State President Mark Keenum says the conference commissioners in charge of building the postseason system for the 2026 season and beyond will restart the task in the coming weeks. Keenum is the chairman of the CFP board of managers. He added that he intends to meet with his fellow presidents and chancellors in August to discuss what comes next for the playoff. An attempt to expand the playoff from the current four-team format to 12 teams before the current 12-year contract with ESPN expires after the 2025 season fell apart last fall.

NCAA – Roger Valdiserri, Notre Dame SID for 3 decades, dies at 95
Roger Valdiserri, who helped tell the story of some of Notre Dame’s greatest football teams as the school’s sports information director for three decades, has died. He was 95. Valdiserri’s family says he died of natural causes at a retirement community outside Chicago. The family said he was surrounded by his five children at the time of his death. Valdiserri was a native of Pennsylvania who graduated from Notre Dame in 1954. His first job at the school was an administrative assistant for football coaches Frank Leahy and Terry Brennan. He took over as the school’s sports information director in 1966 under coach Ara Parseghian. Notre Dame won the first of four national titles in football during Valdiserri’s tenure that season.

NBAGL – NBA G League – Grand Rapids Gold moving to Van Andel Arena
One month after officials decided that the DeltaPlex Arena will close, the Grand Rapids Gold of the NBA G-League have had to search for a new home venue.  The team will move to the downtown Van Andel Arena starting this upcoming season.  Van Andel Arena is the 4th largest arena in the state of Michigan and is currently the home of the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins, who are the Detroit Red Wings primary affiliate.  Van Andel Arena holds just under 11,000 for hockey, and 11, 500 for basketball.  The Gold, who are the affiliated of the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, won’t be the first professional basketball team to call Van Andel Arena home, the Grand Rapids Hoops of the now defunct CBA played there from 1996-2001.  The 2001 Big Ten Women’s Basketball tournament was also held at Van Andel Arena.

The Tigers have won three of four in the series that concludes Thursday. Skubal walked one and struck out six to improve to 3-0 with a 1.22 ERA in his last six starts. Minnesota’s Bailey Ober allowed five runs on nine hits in six innings. The Twins haven’t scored in 20 innings.

Blue Jays 7 White Sox 3 – Guerrero homers as Jays win 7th straight, beat White Sox 7-3
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a two run home run, Danny Jansen added a three-run blast, and the Toronto Blue Jays extended their winning streak to seven games by beating the Chicago White Sox 7-3. It’s Toronto’s longest winning streak since an eight-game run last Sept. 1-9. Santiago Espinal added a solo shot as the Blue Jays won for the 11th time in 14 games. Blue Jays left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu left after four innings because of tightness in his forearm.

Cubs 4, Brewers 3 – F/10 – Morel hits sac fly in 10th as Cubs beat Brewers 4-3
Rookie Christopher Morel drove in Jason Heyward with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3. Heyward started on second base and moved up on a groundout by Nick Madrigal. Morel then drove him in with a fly to left against Hoby Milner (2-1) and got mobbed by his teammates in the infield after the winning run scored. Morel extended his club record by reaching base in his first 15 major league games, when he walked and scored in the first. Willson Contreras singled twice, drove in a run and scored one after hitting home runs in his previous two games.

Michigan standout freshmen Moussa Diabate and Caleb Houstan are staying in the NBA draft. Diabate and Houstan had to make a decision to stay in school or to remain in the draft by Wednesday. The 6-foot-11 Diabate started 26 of 32 games for the Wolverines, averaging nine points and six rebounds. He was born in Paris and played high school basketball in Florida. Houstan, from Canada, led Michigan with 60 3-pointers, averaged 10 points and started in every game last season as a shooting guard.

New York was outscored 33-17 in the second quarter, but used two big runs in the second half to take control. New York went on a 13-0 run in the third to take a 53-52 lead on Natasha Howard’s three-point play. The Liberty also went on a 12-0 run, capped by Allen’s 3-pointer, in the fourth to make it 77-68. Indiana missed its first 14 shots of the fourth and went 1 for 16 in the final 10 minutes. Howard and Stefanie Dolson each scored 16 points for New York. Kelsey Mitchell scored 17 points for Indiana.

NFL – Ex-Bears DT Akiem Hicks signs a 1-year deal with the Bucs
Veteran defensive tackle Akiem Hicks has signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 32-year-old Hicks is likely to become a replacement for Ndamukong Suh, who is a free agent after spending the past three seasons on one-year deals with Tampa Bay. Hicks was a third-round draft pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2012 and spent three seasons and part of a fourth with them before finishing the 2015 season with the New England Patriots. He played the past six years with the Chicago Bears, starting all 77 games he appeared in and had 31 sacks.

NFL – House Oversight Committee invites Goodell, Snyder to appear
The U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform has invited NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder to appear at a hearing later this month. Committee members say they sent letters to the league and team requesting Goodell and Snyder appear June 22. An NFL spokesman says the league received the invitation and would respond directly in a timely manner. Congress launched an investigation into the organization’s workplace culture last year after the league declined to release a report about an independent review it oversaw that led to a $10 million fine. The Commanders say they have assisted the NFL in cooperating with all prior requests from the committee and look forward to responding to the invitation in a timely manner.

NFL – Brady, Rodgers headline list of NFL players skipping OTAs
Tom Brady earned the right to skip voluntary workouts a long time ago. Several other star players, including Aaron Rodgers and Lamar Jackson, also aren’t participating in organized team activities, a trend that’s increasing around the NFL. In Brady’s case, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are thrilled the seven-time Super Bowl champion is playing another season after a brief retirement in February. While their teams were on the field, Rodgers and Brady were involved in another competition Wednesday, taking on fellow quarterbacks Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes in “The Match” golf exhibition in Las Vegas.

Golf – LPGA – US Open’s $10M purse offers hope for gender pay equality
Dottie Pepper recalls being paired with Meg Mallon for the final round of the 1991 U.S. Women’s Open with what she viewed as an impressive $110,000 first-place prize on the line. Things have changed, but Lydia Ko says not enough. Mallon would win that title in 1991, collecting the first six-figure payout in women’s golf history. Pepper says, “That was a big deal.” Three decades later, Pepper can hardly comprehend that the top female golfers in the world will be competing this week for a record $10 million purse. That includes a winner’s take of $1.8 million at the U.S. Women’s Open at Pine Needles. Ko, the No. 3-ranked women’s golfer in the world, said she’s grateful for steps toward equal pay but added “there’s still a ways to go.”

Tennis – French Open – Swiatek wins 33rd match in a row
Top-ranked Iga Swiatek has won her 33rd match in a row with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over 11th-seeded Jessica Pegula to advance to the semifinals of the French Open.  The 21-year-old Swiatek has gone unbeaten since February for the WTA’s longest such stretch since Serena Williams compiled a 34-match run in 2013. Swiatek, who won the 2020 French Open, will next face Daria Kasatkina of Russia for a spot at the final. The 20th-seeded Kasatkina advanced with a 6-4, 7-6 win over No. 29 Veronika Kudermetova, also of Russia.

Seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens saw his 26-year-old son go 0 for 3, striking out twice and drawing a walk. Flawless in the field at second base, Kody Clemens handled a grounder for the final out of the game. Max Kepler had three hits and drove in three runs and Gary Sanchez hit a three-run homer to help the Twins to an 8-2 win in the first game.

Blue Jays 6, White Sox 5 – Kirk HRs twice, Jays beat White Sox 6-5 for 6th straight win
Alejandro Kirk hit a pair of two-run home runs in Toronto’s 6-5 win over the Chicago White Sox. It extended the Blue Jays’ streak to six games., Kevin Gausman pitched five innings to win his second straight start. Kirk hit both home runs off of White Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito, who got the loss. Giolito allowed season-highs of six runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. Toronto is 15-7 in one-run games, the best such record in the majors.

Cubs 8, Brewers 7 – Wisdom homers in 8th inning, Cubs beat Brewers 8-7
Patrick Wisdom hit a tie-breaking solo home run in the eighth inning, Willson Contreras and P.J. Higgins also went deep, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-7. Wisdom’s 11th home run came on a 3-2 pitch from Brad Boxberger, who got the loss. Contreras now has eight homers to lead all MLB catchers. Christopher Morel continued a hot start to his career with a walk and a triple, setting a club record by reaching base in his first 14 major-league games. Former Cub Victor Caratini gave Milwaukee a short-lived 6-3 lead in the sixth with a three-run drive against against reliever Rowan Wick.

MLB – Famous dad watches as Tigers’ Kody Clemens makes MLB debut
Roger Clemens has had some big baseball moments in the city of Detroit. Not many of them had him as fired up as the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader between the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins. The seven-time Cy Young Award winner flew into town from Texas to see his son Kody make his major league debut for the Tigers. The 26-year-old Clemens went 0 for 3 and was flawless in the field at second base as Detroit beat the Twins 4-0 to earn a split.

J.T. Compher scored twice, Cale Makar had a goal and two assists and the Colorado Avalanche held off the Edmonton Oilers 8-6 in Game 1 of the Western Conference final.  The Avalanche’s eight goals were tied for the most in a playoff game in franchise history. Both teams needed to use backup goaltenders. Edmonton’s Mike Smith was pulled after giving up six goals and Darcy Kuemper left with an upper-body injury. Twelve Avs recorded at least a point and six had multi-point games.

Natasha Cloud also had a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists. Washington trailed 46-38 at halftime before outscoring Indiana 49-29 in the second half. The Mystics finished with a 44-32 advantage on the glass. Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana with 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting.

Sky 73, Mercury 70 – Vandersloot leads Sky past Mercury in WNBA Finals rematch
Courtney Vandersloot had 18 points and six assists, Candace Parker grabbed 11 rebounds and the Chicago Sky beat the short-handed Phoenix Mercury 73-70 in a WNBA Finals rematch. Phoenix star Diana Taurasi was ejected with 3:43 left in the second quarter for arguing a no-call with an official. The Mercury were trailing 31-21 at the time, but rallied in the third quarter by scoring 31 points and shooting 72% from the floor. Vandersloot made 1 of 2 free throws with nine seconds left in the fourth quarter for a 72-70 lead, and she knocked the ball away from Skylar Diggins-Smith on a drive at the other end. Rebekah Gardner also went 1 for 2 at the stripe for a three-point lead and Diamond DeShields did not hit the rim on a corner 3-pointer as time expired.

Golf – Nicklaus says he had zero interest in running Saudi league
Jack Nicklaus confirms he met with a Saudi group behind the rival golf league. But he says he had zero interest in the venture no matter how much money he was offered. Nicklaus was quoted in a Firepit Collective story as saying that he was offered in excess of $100 million to do what he assumes is the job now being done by Greg Norman. Nicklaus says his design company is building a golf course in Saudi Arabia and the meeting was a courtesy. He says his allegiance is with the PGA Tour.

Golf – Dustin Johnson defies PGA Tour and joins Saudi-funded series
Dustin Johnson is joining the Saudi-funded golf league. Johnson was the biggest surprise when the LIV Golf Invitational released its field for next week’s inaugural tournament next week in England. Phil Mickelson is not on the list. That’s another surprise. It was Mickelson’s comments about the Saudis and the PGA Tour that led to many top players pledging their support to the PGA Tour in February. Johnson has had a change of heart and is risking his PGA Tour membership. The LIV Golf tournament offers $25 million in prize money. The winner gets $4 million.

NFL – Browns QB Watson facing lawsuit from 23rd massage therapist
Another massage therapist has filed a civil lawsuit against Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, raising the number of women who have accused him of sexual misconduct to 23. Attorney Tony Buzbee, who is representing all the women, filed the latest lawsuit in Texas and said in a text to the AP that there could be more legal action forthcoming against Watson. Buzbee did not provide any details about the latest case. The previous 22 lawsuits were filed in 2021, and two of those cases recently received national attention when two of the women were interviewed for a segment on HBO’s “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.”

Tennis – French Open – Nadal downs Djokovic
Rafael Nadal got himself something for his 36th birthday, a nail-biting win over rival Novak Djokovic. Nadal won 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4) in a monumental match in the French Open quarterfinals to move a step closer to his 14th championship at the clay-court Grand Slam tournament and 22nd major trophy overall. Nadal will face third-seeded Alexander Zverev in the semifinals on Friday, which is Nadal’s actual birthday.

Golf – Champions – Alker shoots 63 and rallies to win Senior PGA for 1st major
Steven Alker is on a roll and now has his first senior major. Alker rallied from four shots behind with a 63 to win the Senior PGA Championship. That’s his third victory this year on the PGA Tour Champions and his first major. The 50-year-old from New Zealand was part of a three-way tie involving Stephen Ames and Bernhard Langer. They all made bogeys at some point on the back nine. Alker made a pair of key birdies that allowed him to take control. The win gets Alker into his first PGA Championship next year at Oak Hill.

Tyrone Taylor homered in both games, Aaron Ashby struck out a career-high 12 in the nightcap and the Milwaukee Brewers swept a doubleheader from the Chicago Cubs 7-6 and 3-1, Luis Urías lined three-run homer into the basket in left-center to break a seventh-inning tie in the opener. The Brewers trailed 4-2 before Taylor’s two-run homer in the sixth, and Milwaukee led 2-1 in the second game when Taylor homered in the eighth. Victor Caratini hit a tiebreaking home run in the fifth inning against his former team, and the Brewers won their third in a row.

MLB – Kody Clemens brought up by Tigers for possible MLB debut
Kody Clemens, the 26-year-old son of seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens, was brought up by the Detroit Tigers for a possible major league debut. Detroit recalled the infielder/outfielder from Triple-A Toledo of the International League and put outfielder Robbie Grossman on the 10-day injured list because of a strained neck. A third round pick in the 2018 amateur draft, Clemens was hitting .283 at Toledo with eight homers and 31 RBIs in 45 games. Drafted as a second baseman, he has played first, second, third and left this season. Detroit needed depth because of Grossman’s injury and Miguel Cabrera’s bad back.

MLB – Sox waive Keuchel, put Cease, Graveman on restricted list
The Chicago White Sox put right-handers Dylan Cease and Kendall Graveman on the restricted list ahead of a three-game series at the Toronto Blue Jays that begins Tuesday night. To enter Canada, the Canadian government requires a person must have received a second vaccine dose or one dose of Johnson & Johnson at least 14 days prior to entry. The White Sox also waived left-hander Dallas Keuchel, who was designated for assignment last week, and recalled right-hander Kyle Crick from Triple-A Charlotte.

MLB – Cubs place Seiya Suzuki on 10-day IL, cut Robert Gsellman
The Chicago Cubs placed rookie outfielder Seiya Suzuki on the 10-day injured list with a left ring finger sprain prior. Suzuki was injured in Thursday’s game against the Reds in Cincinnati when he he stole second in the third inning and jammed his hand on the bag. He left the contest and has not played since. Suzuki is batting .245 with four homers and 21 RBIs in 41 games. The roster move was retroactive to Friday. The Cubs also designated right-hander Robert Gsellman for assignment and selected the contract of left-hander Brandon Hughes from Triple-A Iowa.

Chris Kreider scored twice, and the New York Rangers ended Carolina’s perfect postseason run at home by beating the Hurricanes 6-2 in the decisive Game 7 of their second-round playoff series. Igor Shesterkin was strong in net again, finishing with 36 saves. New York won for the fifth straight time in an elimination game this postseason. Adam Fox also had a first-period power-play goal as New York jumped to a 2-0 lead. Tony DeAngelo and Max Domi scored for Carolina, which lost goaltender Antti Raanta and rookie forward Seth Jarvis to injuries. Carolina was 7-0 at home in the postseason before the loss. New York hosts Tampa Bay in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals on Wednesday night.

NFL – Cardinals DB Jeff Gladney dies in crash
Arizona Cardinals defensive back Jeff Gladney has died in a car crash in Dallas. He was 25. Gladney played at TCU and was a 2020 first-round draft pick of the Minnesota Vikings. He was released before the 2021 season after being charged with assaulting a woman. The Cardinals signed Gladney in March after he was found not guilty in Dallas County, Texas.

Tennis – French Open – Swiatek drops set, but advances
Iga Swiatek finally dropped a set on Monday, but the top women’s seed still advanced to the French Open quarterfinals.  Swiatek had won 20 consecutive sets before dropping a first set tiebreak to Zheng Qinwen of China. She lost just two games after that and took the last two sets, 6-0, 6-2 for her 32nd straight match victory.  Swiatek’s quarterfinal opponent will be 11th-seeded Jessica Pegula of the United States. Pegula made it to the quarterfinals for the first time by coming back to beat Irina-Camelia Begu 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.  Pegula is one of three Americans in the women’s quarters, along with Coco Gauff and Sloane Stephens.

EPL – Chelsea sold for $3.2 billion
Roman Abramovich has completed the sale of the British soccer team Chelsea to a consortium fronted by Los Angeles Dodgers part-owner Todd Boehly.  The $3.2 sale price is the highest ever for a sports team.  Abramovich owned the team for 19 years and was forced to sell the club after being sanctioned over his links to Russian President Vladimir Putin following the invasion of Ukraine.

Golf – Senior PGA – Steven Alker, Bob Estes share Senior PGA lead at 64
On a day when birdies were flying around Harbor Shores in the first round of the Senior PGA Championship, Steven Alker began soaring with an eagle. The 50-year-old New Zealander, who already has won twice and leads the PGA Tour Champions money list with almost $1.2 million, started his round with a 25-foot downhill eagle putt on the 539-yard, par-5 10th hole after a 240-yard approach with a 5-wood. He then finished his afternoon round with his sixth birdie of the day to shoot a 7-under 64, which was tied late in the day by 56-year-old Bob Estes. Alker and Estes were a stroke ahead of Paul Claxton and Mike Weir after the first round at the Jack Nicklaus-design course on Lake Michigan.

Miguel Cabrera hit a game-ending RBI single in the ninth inning with his third hit Thursday night, lifting the Detroit Tigers to a 4-3 win over the Cleveland Guardians. Jonathan Schoop hit a one-out double in the final inning, advanced on a wild pitch from Trevor Stephan and scored on Cabrera’s 3,029th career hit. Gregory Soto gave up one hit and struck out one in the ninth, earning the win for the Tigers. Detroit’s Javier Báez hit an RBI single in the first inning. Schoop’s sacrifice fly and Cabrera’s single put the Tigers ahead 3-0 in the second inning.

Red Sox 16, White Sox 7 – Story’s 7th HR in 7 games helps Red Sox top White Sox 16-7
Trevor Story kept up his hot hitting with a three-run homer and four RBIs, and the Boston Red Sox beat the White Sox 16-7 to take two of three from Chicago. Story has seven homers and 21 RBIs in his last seven games, raising his season totals to nine homers and 32 RBIs. Alex Verdugo had pair of doubles among four hitsfor Boston, which outscored Chicago 33-13 in the series. The Red Sox opened with a 16-3 win and followed with a 3-1 loss. Kevin Plawecki pinch hit for Story in the ninth and homered off Josh Harrison.

Reds 20, Cubs 5 – Reds have highest-scoring day in 23 years, rout Cubs 20-5
Kyle Farmer homered and had tied his career high with five RBIs to power the Cincinnati Reds to their high-scoring game in 23 years, a 20-5 rout of the Chicago Cubs. Farmer and Nick Senzel had four hits each, and Brandon Drury, Tommy Pham and Albert Almora Jr. had three apiece. Cincinnati trailed 3-0 before scoring twice in the second and adding eight runs in the third. The Reds scored their most runs since a 22-3 win at Philadelphia on Sept. 4, 1999, while Chicago gave up its most since a 21-8 defeat at the Phillies on July 3, 1999.

MLB – MLB criticizes teams over facilities for female employees
Major League Baseball has told its clubs that some are failing to provide acceptable work accommodations for female employees, calling them “embarrassingly below” standard. The May 20 memorandum from Michael Hill, the MLB senior vice president for on-field operations, asks teams to provide documentation by June 3 of the facilities for home and visiting female coaches and staff. Hill told teams to comply with MLB regulations “as soon as possible.” San Francisco Giants assistant coach Alyssa Nakken this year became the first woman to work as an on-field coach for a big league team.

Indy 500 – Castroneves seeks historic fifth Indianapolis 500 victory
It took Helio Castroneves 12 tries to win a fourth Indianapolis 500. He hopes it only takes one time to make history. The Brazilian will attempt to win a record-breaking fifth Indy 500 on Sunday after winnin No. 4 a year ago. Castroneves will be making his 22nd start at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, most of any driver in the field. He’s 47 years old and the second oldest driver on the grid. He saysd he’s shown that experience at Indy matters far more than age. He hopes to drive from the back of the field to win No. 5.

Nassar – No charges for agents in botched Larry Nassar probe
The U.S. Justice Department says it won’t pursue criminal charges against former FBI agents who failed to quickly open an investigation of sports doctor Larry Nassar. Agents knew in 2015 that Nassar was accused of sexually assaulting female gymnasts. Nassar wasn’t arrested until 2016. The Office of Inspector General found that two former agents likely provided “inaccurate or incomplete information” when investigators subsequently tried to understand what happened. But the Justice Department says more would be needed to file charges. Nassar was a Michigan State University sports doctor as well as a doctor at USA Gymnastics. He is serving decades in prison for assaulting female athletes and possessing child pornography.

Tennis – French Open – Only 3 of women’s top 10 seeds remain
The unexpected results in the women’s draw at the French Open keep piling up. Only three of the top 10 women’s seeds are still in the field before the third round has even started.  Two more were ousted Thursday when former No. 1 Karolina Pliskova lost to Leolia Jeanjean, who is ranked just 227th and is playing in her first Grand Slam tournament. No. 9 Danielle Collins lost to Shelby Rogers in a matchup between two Americans. Two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep said she had a panic attack while leading her second-round match that she eventually lost. The 2018 Roland Garros winner said she “lost it” and couldn’t regain focus while playing 19-year-old Qinwen Zheng, who won 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.  No surprises involving top-seeded Iga Swiatek, however. She ran her winning streak to 30 matches by beating Alison Riske 6-0, 6-2.  The other two top 10 seeds still standing are No. 3 Paula Badosa and No. 7 Aryna Sabalenka.

NFL – “Forgotten Four” to be honored at Canton
The four men who smashed the race barrier in professional football in 1946 have been selected to share the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Ralph Hay Pioneer Award. The Canton, Ohio,-based organization announced that Kenny Washington, Woody Strode and Hall of Famers Bill Willis and Marion Motley will be celebrated during the Hall’s enshrinement week in August.

CFL – CFL Players’ Association ratifies new CBA
The CFL Players’ Association ratified a collective bargaining agreement with the Canadian Football League on Thursday night. The CFLPA made the announcement via email. The players’ vote came hours after the sides hammered out a seven-year tentative agreement — and two days after CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie unveiled the league’s final offer. With the players accepting the agreement, the league’s exhibition season will open on time Friday night. On Monday, the players voted against a tentative deal the union had recommended they accept.

Harold Castro went deep twice earlier as Tigers dodged another sweep and broke a six-game winning streak by the Twins. The Tigers have 25 homers in 43 games for the fewest in baseball. Trevor Larnach hit a two-run homer for the Twins in the fourth inning to spoil an otherwise-stellar start by Rony García pieced together by Tigers relievers.

White Sox 3, Red Sox 1 – Burger’s homer off Hill lifts White Sox over Red Sox
Jake Burger hit a three-run homer off Rich Hill, Lucas Giolito overcame a shaky first inning and the Chicago White Sox beat the Red Sox 3-1 to end Boston’s six-game winning streak. The White Sox won for the fourth time in six games. Burger, recalled Tuesday from Triple-A Charlotte after Luis Robert was placed on the COVID-19 injured list, hit an 0-2 breaking pitch in the fifth inning that traveled an estimated 444 feet. Giolito threw 27 pitches in the first but still allowed fewer than two runs for the fourth time this season. Hill held the White Sox hitless through four innings but lost his lead quickly.

Reds 4, Cubs 3 – Votto homers, triples, shouts at reliever as Reds beat Cubs
Joey Votto homered and tripled, then shouted at Cubs reliver Rowan Wick during a tense ending to the Cincinnati Reds’ 4-3 win over Chicago. Votto had a solo homer in the second inning off Kyle Hendricks and a two-run triple in the third as Cincinnati ended a two-game skid. Wick brushed back the 16-year veteran in the eighth, then walked him. Votto barked at Wick as he made his way to first base, and he also had words for Chicago’s dugout. An inning later, Reds reliever Hunter Strickland plunked Patrick Wisdom. Cubs manager David Ross was ejected by plate umpire Dan Merzel after leaving the dugout to protest.

Indy 500 – Penske ready for 300,000 guests in a full-capacity Indy 500
Roger Penske will at last be able to open the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to a capacity crowd this Sunday for his first true Indianapolis 500 since buying the property in 2020. The pandemic forced his first 500 to be held without spectators and only 40% capacity last year. He’s spent more than $30 million in capital improvements to prepare the iconic speedway for Penske’s first true housewarming party. He expects more than 300,000 people on property Sunday and has been relentless in ensuring the speedway is in pristine condition for his guests.

The Indiana Fever have fired coach Marianne Stanley following a 2-7 start. The New York Liberty are the only WNBA team with fewer wins this season. The Fever announced that Carlos Knox is being promoted from assistant coach to interim coach. Interim general manager Lin Dunn says Indiana needed to go in a different direction with a young nucleus of players. Stanley was in the final year of her contract. Knox was a star college player at nearby IUPUI.

WNBA – Brittney Griner’s wife tells ABC she wants WNBA star home
Brittney Griner’s wife, Cherelle, wants President Joe Biden to secure her partner’s release, doing whatever is necessary to get the WNBA star home from Russia where she has been detained for more than three months. Cherelle Griner became emotional detailing what little she knows about Brittney’s detainment during an interview that aired Wednesday on Good Morning America. The Phoenix Mercury center has been detained since Feb. 17 after vape cartridges containing oil derived from cannabis were allegedly found in her luggage at an airport near Moscow. The 31-year-old Griner is a two-time Olympic gold medalist for the U.S. She faces drug smuggling charges that carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. The Biden administration has determined Griner is being wrongfully detained.

Tennis – French Open – No. 1 Djokovic eases into 3rd round
Novak Djokovic has eased into the third round of his French Open title defense with a straight-set victory over Alex Molcan. The top-ranked Djokovic defeated the 24-year-old Slovakian 6-2, 6-3, 7-6.  Molcan was able to push Djokovic to a third-set tiebreaker but threw his racket down in frustration after his 34th unforced error to fall behind 6-3.  Other second-round winners on the men’s side were third seed Alexander Zverev and No. 6 Carlos Alcaraz, both in five sets.  Coco Gauff has reached the third round in the women’s bracket by winning a second-set tiebreak. The 18-year-old American is the youngest player remaining in the draw.  Two-time Grand Slam champ Victoria Azarenka also advanced, but U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu  and fourth-seeded Maria Sakkari were ousted in the second round.

NFL – NFL to appeal ruling in Gruden lawsuit over leaked emails
The NFL says it will appeal a ruling denying the league’s request to move former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden’s lawsuit over leaked emails from a public courtroom into closed-door arbitration. In a statement, the NFL denied Gruden’s claims that league officials or Commissioner Roger Goodell leaked racist, sexist and homophobic emails by Gruden to force him to resign last October. Judge Nancy Allf in Las Vegas refused requests to dismiss Gruden’s claim outright or move it to out-of-court talks that could be overseen by Goodell. Gruden emerged from the courtroom declaring “Go Raiders” and saying he was going to let the process take care of itself.

MHSAA – Bloomingdale adding girls soccer
Bloomingdale high school announced this week that the school will be adding girls soccer to their list of available sports starting next season.  Bloomingdale currently has a boys soccer team, which plays in the fall.  The new girls soccer team will take to the field next spring.  The Cardinals athletic department says more information will be coming over the next few months as they build their girls soccer program.

Golf – Senior PGA – Steve Stricker out of Senior PGA with positive COVID-19 test
Former Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker has pulled out of the Senior PGA Championship after testing positive for the coronavirus. Stricker revealed his positive test Tuesday on Twitter. He says he was “super bummed” and that it was “just a small setback.” Stricker was out of competition for six months because of a virus that he says doctors never fully identified. He became ill last fall about a month after leading the Americans to a record blowout over Europe at Whistling Straits. Stricker is coming off his fourth senior major title two weeks ago at the Regions Tradition.

Sonny Gray compiled a season-high 10 strikeouts over seven sharp innings, carrying the Minnesota Twins past the Detroit Tigers 2-0 for their sixth straight victory. Gray allowed four hits and one walk in by far his best of six starts with his new team. The Twins are 23-8 since April 21. They have won each of the last four games with Gray on the mound after he returned from a strained hamstring. Gio Urshela had three hits and an RBI, and Carlos Correa hit an RBI double for the Twins against Tigers rookie Beau Brieske.

Red Sox 16, White Sox 3 – Red Sox pound White Sox 16-3, extend win streak to 6 games
Trevor Story and Christian Vazquez each hit a three-run home run and drove in four runs as the Boston Red Sox set season highs in runs and hits in a 16-3 win over the Chicago White Sox. Story’s homer off Dylan Cease capped a four-run first inning. Vazquez hit a three-run shot off Matt Foster to highlight a six-run sixth. Kike Hernandez hit Cease’s first pitch for a homer, and Rafael Devers led off the fourth with a homer off Jose Ruiz as the Red Sox extended their winning streak to six games. Designated hitter J.D. Martinez had four of the Red Sox’s 19 hits. The White Sox fell for the fourth time in seven games. José Abreu hit a two-run homer and Tim Anderson had two hits, including an RBI single for Chicago.

Cubs 11, Reds 4 – Schwindel hits 2 homers, Cubs power past Reds 11-4
Frank Schwindel homered twice in a game for the first time in his career, Marcus Stroman recovered from a rough start to pitch five effective innings, and the Chicago Cubs rolled past the Cincinnati Reds. Schwindel has three homers in the first two games of Chicago’s four-game series at Cincinnati. The Cubs have hit a major league-leading 19 homers since May 14, going deep in 10 of 11 games. Stroman needed 37 pitches to get through the first, allowing four singles and two runs to the first five batters. But he cruised after that, retiring 14 of his final 16 batters with two walks. He struck out eight.

NBA – Bulls’ Zach LaVine has knee surgery, full recovery expected
Chicago Bulls guard Zach Lavine underwent left knee arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday. The team said it was successful and he is expected to make a full recovery. LaVine averaged 24.4 points and made his second straight NBA All-Star team last year. The Bulls lost in the first round of the playoffs to Milwaukee. LaVine’s four-year, $78 million contract is up and he said last month that he plans to explore the market as an unrestricted free agent. The Bulls can offer a max contract worth more than $210 million over five years.

Parker, coming off her second career triple-double on Sunday, also had three steals and three blocks while shooting 6 for 9 from the field. Courtney Vandersloot had 14 points, six rebounds and seven assists for Chicago (4-2). Kahleah Copper and Allie Quigley each scored 12 and Dana Evans had 10 points. Stevens beat the third-quarter buzzer with a basket in the lane to give Chicago a 70-65 lead. After Kelsey Mitchell pulled Indiana within 93-90 with 21.8 seconds left, Vandersloot sank two free throws to seal it. Mitchell scored 25 points for Indiana.

NFL – Changes under new coach Matt Eberflus hit Bears defense
Personnel, position change and even weight loss have been some of the changes to affect the Chicago Bears defense since the start of spring work in organized team activities during coach Matt Eberflus’ first season. The switch to a 4-3 defense from a 3-4 meant some players switched positions, such as linebacker Roquan Smith. New players such as linebacker Nicholas Morrow, rookie cornerback Kyler Gordon and rookie safety Jaquan Brisker are getting extensive looks with the first team. All the while, the Bears are without veteran defensive ends Robert Quinn and Al-Quadin Muhammad, who have opted not to participate in voluntary offseason work.

NFL – NFL revamps Rooney Rule to include quarterbacks coaches
The NFL has expanded the Rooney Rule again, this time to include quarterbacks coaches in a further effort to diversify the coaching ranks. The change was announced Tuesday at the owners meeting in Atlanta by Jonathan Beane, the NFL’s senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer. The oft-criticized Rooney Rule, adopted in 2003 to enhance opportunities for minorities to gain head coaching jobs and enhanced several times to include front office positions, now will requires one minority or female candidate from another team to be interviewed for quarterbacks coach. Previously, the rule covered head coach, general manager and all coordinator jobs.

Tennis – French Open – Medvedev wins opening match
Daniil Medvedev got his French Open off to a winning start — never a sure thing for the second-seeded Russian. The U.S. Open champion beat Facundo Bagnis of Argentina 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.  Medvedev was a quarterfinalist at Roland Garros last year after four straight losses in the first round. The Russian earned his first victory since undergoing hernia surgery nearly two months ago. He had lost his opening-round match at the Geneva Open last week on his return. Medvedev reached the final at the Australian Open this year, losing to Rafael Nadal in five sets.
