Rangers 10, Tigers 5 – Hicks' 4th homer in 4 games helps Rangers top Tigers 10-5

John Hicks became the first player to homer in his first four games with the Rangers/Washington Senators franchise and added a go-ahead single in the seventh inning to lead Texas over the Detroit Tigers 10-5. Hicks, brought up from Triple-A Round Rock on June 29 after catcher Jose Trevino got hurt, hit a two-run homer of the left field foul pole in the fourth that put the Rangers ahead in a four-run inning. He became the fourth player to hit four or more homers in his first four games with a team.

White Sox 4, Twins 1 – Rodón sharp on a rainy night as White Sox beat Twins 4-1

Carlos Rodón (7-3) allowed one run on seven hits, and the Chicago White Sox took advantage of sloppy play by the Minnesota Twins to win 4-1 in Minnesota on a rainy Tuesday night. Catcher Zack Collins, making the start after Yasmani Grandal went on the injured list earlier in the day with a torn tendon in his left knee, had a two-run single in the second inning after two walks and two errors by the Twins. Minnesota starter José Berríos (7-3) allowed two runs _ one earned _ on just one hit with 10 strikeouts.

Phillies 15, Cubs 10 – Harper leads way as Phillies hand Cubs 11th straight loss

Bryce Harper homered and tied a career high with five hits, Andrew McCutchen smacked a grand slam and the Philadelphia Phillies handed Chicago its 11th straight loss, beating the Cubs 15-10. Rhys Hoskins also went deep. The Phillies jumped on Jake Arrieta (5-9) after beating Chicago 13-3 the previous night and finished two shy of a season high with 16 hits. The Cubs, meanwhile, extended their worst skid since they dropped 12 in a row in May 2012. They remained winless since Zach Davies and three relievers combined to no-hit the Dodgers in Los Angeles on June 24.

MLB – Yasmani Grandal out 4-6 weeks with torn tendon in left knee

The Chicago White Sox placed catcher Yasmani Grandal on the 10-day injured list with a torn tendon in his left knee. Grandal was injured during an at-bat in Monday’s loss in Minnesota. Chicago estimates Grandal will be out approximately four to six weeks. Grandal was hitting just .188 as Chicago’s starting catcher, but he owned a .388 on-base percentage in 63 games to go with 14 home runs and 38 RBIs. Seby Zavala, 27, was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte and was with the team for Tuesday’s game in Minnesota.

Suns 118, Bucks 105 – Paul carries Suns past Giannis, Bucks in NBA Finals opener

Chris Paul had 32 points and nine assists, Devin Booker scored 27 points and the Phoenix Suns beat the returning Giannis Antetokounmpo and his Milwaukee Bucks 118-105 in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Paul scored 16 points during a sensational third quarter that had Phoenix fans who waited 28 years to see the NBA Finals again screaming in delight. Finally playing for the title in his 16th season, the star point guard has the Suns in the NBA Finals for only the third time, and it sure looked as if they could make this one different than the other two.

Tigers 7, Rangers 3 – Peralta 7 scoreless innings for Tigers in 7-3 win at Rangers

Wily Peralta had his longest big league outing since 2016 as the Detroit Tigers opened their series in Texas with a 7-3 win. Pertalta's seven scoreless innings came in his fourth start for the Tigers. The 32-year-old right-hander went to spring training with them on a minor league deal. He hasn't been a full-time starter in the majors since 2017. Rangers lefty Kolby Allard struck out a career-high nine in 5 1/3 innings. Two of the five runs against him were unearned. Zack Short hit a two-run homer and had a sacrifice fly for the Tigers.

Twins 8, White Sox 5 – Ober wins 1st, Kepler hits 2 homers, Twins top White Sox 8-5

Rookie Bailey Ober pitched five scoreless innings for his first major league victory, Max Kepler homered twice and the Minnesota Twins held off the Chicago White Sox 8-5. Ober hit the milestone in his seventh career start. He had seven strikeouts with two hits and three walks allowed. In two previous turns against the White Sox, Ober gave up nine runs in 7 1/3 innings. Kepler hit a two-run home run in the second. With an RBI single by Trevor Larnach and a two-run triple from Nick Gordon, the Twins built a 6-1 lead on White Sox starter Dylan Cease.

Phillies 13, Cubs 3 – Phillies hand Cubs 10th straight loss with 13-3 romp

Odúbel Herrera hit a three-run homer, and the Philadelphia Phillies went deep five times while handing the Chicago Cubs their 10th straight loss with a 13-3 romp. Andrew Knapp, Didi Gregorius, Rhys Hoskins and Alec Brohm also connected. The Cubs remained winless since Zach Davies and three relievers combined to no-hit the Dodgers in Los Angeles on June 24. They also extended their worst losing streak since a 12-game slide in May 2012. Herrera’s drive against reliever Kohl Stewart capped a six-run eighth that broke open a 4-2 game. Knapp connected leading off the third and Gregorius added a solo shot against Davies in the fourth. Hoskins and Brohm went back to back in the ninth. Cubs manager David Ross was ejected in the 6th inning after arguing a walk by Cubs pitcher Rex Brothers.   It’s his 3rd ejection this season.

Josh Anderson scored his second goal 3:57 into overtime, and the Montreal Canadiens avoided elimination by defeating the defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final. Pat Maroon and Barclay Goodrow scored for the Lightning who are attempting to become the NHL’s second team to win consecutive titles in the NHL's salary-cap era. The series shifts to Tampa Bay for Game 5 on Wednesday night.

NHL – Jackets netminding prospect dies

Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks died of chest trauma from an errant fireworks mortar blast in what authorities described as a tragic accident on the Fourth of July. Police in Novi, Michigan, say the firework tilted slightly and started to fire toward people nearby. The 24-year-old Kivlenieks was in a hot tub and tried to get clear with several other people. Authorities had earlier said the Latvian died of an apparent head injury during a fall. An autopsy clarified the cause of death. Blue Jackets president of hockey operations John Dav...

After two ACL injuries, St. Joe grad Izzy Rothrock pushed though both major setbacks to continue to live her softball dreams.

She and her Lady Bear teammates captured two district championships, she recently received 1st Team All-Conference, All-District, and All-Region honors, and will now continue her academic and softball careers at Wilmington College.

Phil McDonald sat down with Izzy to talk about her two battles through recovery, winning the two district titles, and now having the opportunity to play college softball.  Catch their conversation below...

White Sox 8, Twins 5 – Collins, White Sox complete sweep of Twins with 8-5 win

Zack Collins hit a tiebreaking homer in the sixth inning and the Chicago White Sox scored at least seven runs for the fourth straight game, completing a three-game sweep of the Minnesota Twins 8-5. Chicago got four runs off Minnesota’s bullpen after the Twins erased a 3-0 deficit. The AL Central-leading White Sox won their fourth straight after losing seven of nine. Collins broke a 4-4 tie when he hit a fastball from Jorge Alcala into the left-center field bleachers. Jose Abreu drove in another run in the sixth, and Danny Mendick and Collins drove in two more in the seventh.

MLB – Biden to host Dodgers, World Series champs, at White House

President Joe Biden will host the Los Angeles Dodgers at the White House on Friday to mark the team’s World Series victory last October over the Tampa Bay Rays. The White House announced that the team, which is in town for a four-game series against the Washington Nationals, will attend the East Room ceremony. Vice President Kamala Harris, the former California senator, will also attend the even. The event marks the return of ceremonies for sports champions at the White House after an inconsistent record of the tradition under the Trump administration.

Bucks 123, Hawks 112 – Without Giannis, Bucks beat Hawks 123-112 for 3-2 lead

Brook Lopez scored a playoff career-high 33 points and the Milwaukee Bucks withstood Giannis Antetokounmpo’s absence and beat the Atlanta Hawks 123-112 on Thursday to regain the lead in the Eastern Conference finals.  The Bucks own a 3-2 series edge and are one win away from reaching the NBA Finals for the first time since 1974. Game 6 is Saturday in Atlanta. Each team was missing its biggest star as Antetokounmpo dealt with a hyperextended left knee and Atlanta’s Trae Young sat out a second straight game due to a bone bruise in his right foot.

NHL – Richardson set to hand Habs coaching duties back to Ducharme

Montreal Canadiens assistant Luke Richardson is preparing to hand back the coaching duties to Dominique Ducharme for the remainder of the Stanley Cup Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Ducharme spent the past two weeks in mandatory self-quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19. The 14-day period ended Thursday, leaving him eligible to return in time for Game 3 as the series shifts to Montreal on Friday night. The Canadiens could use a boost after losing the first two games in Tampa Bay. Montreal did show signs of improvement in a 3-1 loss on Wednesday.

NHL – Canada Dry? Habs seek to end nation's 28-year Cup drought

The Montreal Canadiens bid to end Canada's Stanley Cup drought brings back memories of the building in which they last won the title in 1993. The Montreal Forum still stands, but it's significance is beginning to fade. The iconic shrine where the Canadiens hoisted 12 of their 24 Cups has been turned into a multiplex theater. The Canadiens have since moved to the Bell Centre, which hosting its first Cup Final series. The defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning lead 2-0 with the series switching to Montreal for Game 3 on Friday.

Tigers 9, Indians 4 – Game 1 – Castro, Schoop drive in 3 each, Tigers beat Indians 9-4

Harold Castro and Jonathan Schoop each drove in three runs, powering the Detroit Tigers past the Cleveland Indians 9-4 in the first game of a doubleheader. Castro’s two-out single off Bryan Shaw in the fifth inning scored Nomar Mazara and broke a 4-4 tie. Schoop had a two-run single in the seventh as the Tigers banged out 15 hits in the seven-inning game. Kyle Funkhouser retired all five batters he faced in relief of starter José Urena, who allowed a career-high four home runs in 3 1/3 innings. Detroit won at Cleveland for the first time in five games this season. Rookie Bobby Bradley hit two of the four homers off Urena.

Tigers 7, Indians 1 – Game 2 – Cabrera hits 494th homer, Tigers sweep DH from Indians

Miguel Cabrera hit his 494th career homer, moving into sole possession of 28th place all-time, and the Detroit Tigers completed a doubleheader sweep with a 7-1 win over the Cleveland Indians. Cabrera went 2 for 4, scored twice and broke a tie with Lou Gehrig and Fred McGriff on the homer list with a solo shot off Nick Wittgren in the fifth inning. Wily Peralta, who didn’t pitch in the majors last year, allowed one unearned run over five innings for his first victory since April 17, 2019, with Kansas City.

White Sox 13, Twins 3 – Grandal hits 2 of White Sox 6 HRs to rip Twins 13-3

Yasmani Grandal hit a three-run shot and a towering two-run drive, and the Chicago White Sox went deep six times to pound the Minnesota Twins 13-3. Rookie Andrew Vaughn smacked a two-run homer and had three RBIs. Gavin Sheets hit his first career home run in his second game as Chicago won its third straight. José Abreu and Brian Goodwin added solo shots to help first-place Chicago expand its lead over Cleveland in the AL Central. Dylan Cease cruised to his fourth victory in five starts, allowing three hits and striking out seven in six innings. Josh Donaldson and Nelson Cruz connected for solo homers off the 25-year-old right-hander.

Brewers 15, Cubs 7 – Ashby tagged, but Brewers sweep Cubs for 8th straight win

Highly touted Milwaukee prospect Aaron Ashby got roughed up for seven runs in the first inning of his big league debut, but Luis Urias homered twice as the Brewers rallied to rout the Chicago Cubs 15-7 for their eighth straight win. The Brewers swept the three-game series and increased their NL Central lead to six games over Chicago. The Cubs lost their sixth in a row. Willy Adames hit a grand slam during an eight-run burst in the fourth inning that put Milwaukee ahead 14-7. His error at shortstop helped the Cubs break loose at the start against Ashby.

The Phoenix Suns are headed to the NBA Finals for the first time in 28 years, defeating the Los Angeles Clippers 130-103 to close out the Western Conference finals in six games. Chris Paul tied his career playoff high of 41 points points and Devin Booker added 22 points to send the Suns to their third Finals appearance in franchise history. They will face either the Atlanta Hawks or Milwaukee Bucks, who are tied 2-2 in the East finals. Marcus Morris led the Clippers with 26 points and Paul George added 21 points.

White Sox 7, Twins 6 – Gavin Sheets delivers in debut, White Sox beat Twins 7-6

Gavin Sheets had two hits and two RBIs in his major league debut, helping Lucas Giolito and the Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 7-6. Leury García also drove in two runs as Chicago increased its AL Central lead to 2 1/2 games over Cleveland. Giolito pitched six-plus innings of three-run ball in his first win in a month. Josh Donaldson hit a two-run homer for Minnesota, which had won seven of nine.

Brewers 2, Cubs 1 – Woodruff excels, Brewers edge Cubs 2-1 for 7th straight win

Brandon Woodruff pitched another gem and the Milwaukee Brewers made the most of their two hits, hanging on to edge the Chicago Cubs 2-1 for their season-high seventh straight win. A day after battering Chicago 14-4, the Brewers extended their NL Central lead to five games. The second-place Cubs lost their fifth in a row. Milwaukee managed to win with just an RBI double by Christian Yelich in the first inning and an RBI single by Jace Peterson in the fourth. Both runs were walked aboard by Zach Davies, who made his first start against his former team. Woodruff allowed one run on four hits in six innings, striking out eight and nudging his ERA down from 1.89 to 1.87.

Tigers at Indians – PPD – Tigers, Indians postponed, playing doubleheader on Wednesday

Following a lengthy delay at the start, Tuesday night’s game between the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians was postponed by rain. Both starting pitchers got warmed up in the bullpen and it appeared the second game of the series between the AL Central teams was set to start on time when the grounds crew brought out the tarp just minutes before the scheduled 7:10 p.m. first pitch. The game was rescheduled as part of a doubleheader on Wednesday, starting at 4 p.m. However, there is more rain in the forecast.

MLB – White Sox place Lamb on IL with strained right quadriceps

The Chicago White Sox have placed Jake Lamb on the 10-day injured list and reinstated fellow outfielder Billy Hamilton from the IL. The White Sox also recalled first baseman Gavin Sheets from Triple-A Charlotte and optioned outfielder Luis González to their top farm club. The 30-year-old Lamb has a strained right quadriceps. He is batting .224 with five homers and 10 RBIs in 31 games in his first season with Chicago.

Hawks 110, Bucks 88 – Hawks romp to 110-88 win without Young, Giannis goes down

The Atlanta Hawks proved they are more than a one-man team, shaking off Trae Young’s absence with a freak injury to even the Eastern Conference finals at two wins apiece with a 110-88 rout of the Milwaukee Bucks. And in another stunning twist to a series no one saw coming, two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo hobbled off the court with an injured left knee, depriving the Bucks of their best player. Lou Williams did a stellar job filling in for Young with 21 points and the Hawks pulled away in the third quarter. Game 4 is Thursday night in Milwaukee.
