Tigers 4, Royals 3 – Mize, Cabrera help Tigers send Royals to 5th straight loss

Casey Mize turned in his eighth quality start in his last nine games, Miguel Cabrera got two more hits and the Detroit Tigers beat Kansas City 4-3. The Royals lost their fifth in a row. Mize allowed three runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. Gregory Soto pitched the ninth for his sixth save in as many chances. Cabrera, stuck in a slump for most of the season, doubled and singled to drive in one run and score another. He had three hits in Monday night’s win over the Royals.

White Sox 3, Rays 0 – Keuchel crisp thru 7, leads White Sox past Rays 3-0

Dallas Keuchel pitched seven innings of crisp four-hit ball to win his fifth straight decision, leading the Chicago White Sox past the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0. Adam Engel hit a home run and Tim Anderson had three hits as the White Sox bounced back from a 5-2 loss on Monday in matchup of the teams with the two best records in the majors. Danny Mendick drove in a run and set up another as Chicago won for the fifth time in six and ended Tampa Bay’s four-game winning streak.

Mets 3, Cubs 2 – Walker strikes out career-high 12 to lead Mets over Cubs 3-2

Taijuan Walker struck out a career-high 12, Pete Alonso drove in three runs and the surging New York Mets threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the ninth inning of a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Walker allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings, and he walked none for the third time. Walker had struck out 11 seven times previously, all before he had Tommy John surgery on April 25, 2018. The right-hander has a 2.12 ERA, and the Mets are unbeaten in his six home starts.

MLB – White Sox sparkplug Madrigal out for year after surgery

Chicago White Sox second baseman Nick Madrigal will miss the rest of the season after having surgery to repair tears in his right hamstring. The AL Central leaders, who have overcome significant injuries this season, said Madrigal was expected to be fully recovered by next spring. Madrigal was hurt last week trying to beat out a grounder. Chicago had put him on the 60-day injured list and held out hope he might recover to play again this year. The 24-year-old rookie had been a sparkplug for the White Sox, hitting .305 while scoring 30 runs and driving in 21 over 54 games.

MLB – Cubs' Kris Bryant hit on hand by Walker pitch, leaves game

Cubs star Kris Bryant by a pitch from Taijuan Walker in the first inning and left Chicago’s game against the New York Mets in the middle of the second with what the team said was a bruised right hand. Bryant initially stayed in the game after he was hit by a first-pitch 93.4 mph sinker, then went to run at first base. He was at third base for the second time since April 20. In a 6-for-41 slide after a hot start, Bryant is batting .292 with 13 homers and 39 RBIs.

MLB – MLB threatens pitchers with 10-game bans for altering balls

Pitchers will be ejected and suspended for 10 games for using illegal foreign substances to doctor baseballs in a crackdown by Major League Baseball that will start Monday. The move announced by the commissioner’s office comes in response to record strikeouts and a league batting average at its lowest since 1968. The commissioner's office says major and minor league umpires will start regular checks of all pitchers, even if opposing managers don’t request inspections. Tigers 10, Royals 3 – Tigers lose 2 pitchers to injuries, end 3-game skid, beat KC

Detroit starter Matthew Boyd and reliever Alex Lange both exited with injuries and the Tigers still ended a three-game losing streak, beating the Kansas City Royals 10-3. Willi Castro, Robbie Grossman and Niko Goodrum homered for Detroit. Miguel Cabrera got three hits and drove in two runs, with his RBI single keying a four-run first inning. The Royals, who have not led since finishing off Thursday’s 6-1 victory in Oakland, lost their fourth in a row. They are a season-worst five games below .500. Boyd departed in the third because of discomfort in his left arm. Lange left after recording just one out in the fifth with an unspecified problem.

Rays 5, White Sox 2 – MLB-best Rays power past White Sox; Glasnow exits early

Austin Meadows, Brandon Lowe and Randy Arozarena homered, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Chicago White Sox 5-2 for their fourth straight win. Tampa Bay improved to 43-24, 1 1/2 games ahead of the White Sox for the best record in the majors. The Rays have won seven of eight. Tampa Bay starter Tyler Glasnow left after four innings with right elbow inflammation. The 6-foot-8 right-hander allowed two runs on three hits, walked one and struck out six, throwing 40 of 53 pitches for strikes. Tim Anderson had two hits and Brian Goodwin added an RBI single for the White Sox, whose four-game winning streak ended.

Mets 5, Cubs 2 – Peterson, Smith lead Mets to 5-2 home win over Cubs

David Peterson pitched one-hit ball over six scoreless innings for his first win in two months, and the New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs at home for the first time in exactly four years with a 5-2 victory. Dominic Smith homered for the Mets, who stopped Chicago’s five-game winning streak in the opener of a four-game series between NL division leaders. New York scored all its runs with two outs and snapped a seven-game skid at Citi Field against the Cubs that began on May 31, 2018. Peterson was 0-4 with a 6.32 ERA in his previous nine starts. Anthony Rizzo and Patrick Wisdom hit back-to-back homers for the Cubs. Jake Arrieta took the loss.

Shea Theodore had a goal and an assist, Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-1 in the first game of the Stanley Cup semifinal. Fleury has now allowed two or fewer goals in nine of his 13 playoff appearances this season. Alec Martinez, Mattias Janmark, and Nick Holden also scored for the Golden Knights. Rookie Cole Caufield scored his first career playoff goal for Montreal, while goaltender Carey Price made 26 saves.

White Sox 4, Tigers 1 – Rodón takes no-hitter into 7th; White Sox sweep Tigers

Carlos Rodón took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and the Chicago White Sox completed a three-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers with a 4-1 win. Rodón was going for his second no-hitter of the season. He took a perfect game into the ninth inning against the Cleveland Indians on April 14, hitting a batter with one out before finishing the no-no. Eric Haase doubled with one out in the seventh on Sunday. Rodón finished the inning, allowing one run on one hit and two walks while striking out nine. Evan Marshall and Liam Hendriks completed the one-hitter, with Hendriks getting his AL-leading 17th save.

Cubs 2, Cardinals 0 – Davies sharp, Cubs beat Cardinals 2-0 for 3-game sweep

Zach Davies tossed two-hit ball into the seventh inning to outduel Carlos Martinez and the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 to complete a three-game sweep. The Cubs have won five straight and 15 of 20 to remain in a tie with the Milwaukee Brewers atop the NL Central. Chicago kept up its success at Wrigley Field, where it's won six in a row and nine of 10. The teams combined for only six hits, four by the Cubs. Anthony Rizzo went 1 for 4 and recorded the game’s only RBI. St. Louis has dropped three straight and 11 of 13 to fall one game below .500 at 32-33.

No. 9 hitter David LaManna hit a three-run home run to cap a four-run fourth inning, catapulting No. 10 overall seed Notre Dame to a 9-1 victory over No. 7 seed Mississippi State in the Starkville Super Regional, setting up a Monday showdown for a berth in the College World Series. The Bulldogs (44-16) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when Rowdey Jordan tripled on the first pitch from Notre Dame starter Aidan Tyrell (5-1) and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tanner Allen on Tyrell’s second pitch, but that was it for Mississippi State.

Tennis – French Open – Djokovic rallies for his 2nd French Open title

Novak Djokovic has won his second French Open championship and his 19th Grand Slam title. Djokovic rallied past Stefanos Tsitsipas in a seesaw final at Roland Garros. The score was 6-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Djokovic also erased a two-set deficit to win in the fourth round, and has done it six times in his career. Tigers 8, Mariners 3 – Tigers rally early behind Schoop, beat Mariners 8-3

Jonathan Schoop homered and Isaac Paredes hit a go-ahead single as the Detroit Tigers rallied from a first-inning deficit and took advantage of three errors to beat the Seattle Mariners 8-3. Mitch Haniger put Seattle ahead against Tyler Alexander with the first of his two solo homers, but the Tigers rallied to take two of three from the Mariners, who have lost six of nine following a five-game winning streak. José Jiménez pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for his first win since last Aug. 26. Alex Lange threw the eighth and Gregory Soto pitched a perfect ninth to finish the six-hitter.

White Sox 5, Blue Jays 2 – Keuchel, Grandal lead White Sox past Blue Jays 5-2

Dallas Keuchel pitched six effective innings and Yasmani Grandal homered, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 5-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Led by Keuchel, Chicago closed out a 5-2 homestand and improved its AL Central lead to a season-high 4 1/2 games over idle Cleveland. Adam Engel also went deep, and reigning AL MVP José Abreu hit two RBI doubles. Marcus Semien and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. each drove in a run for Toronto, which lost for the fourth time in six games. Hyun Jin Ryu pitched six innings of three-run ball in his second straight loss.

MLB – White Sox 2B Madrigal sidelined by torn right hamstring

White Sox second baseman Nick Madrigal could miss the rest of the season after tearing his right hamstring, putting another key player on the team’s injured list. Madrigal was helped off the field after he tried to beat out a grounder in the seventh inning of Wednesday night’s 6-2 loss to Toronto. The No. 4 overall pick in the 2018 amateur draft had been rounding into form of late, batting .365 with two homers and 10 RBIs in his last 20 games. Manager Tony La Russa says the loss of Madrigal is a “big blow.”

MLB – Judge rejects effort to return MLB All-Star Game to Georgia

A Manhattan judge has rejected an attempt to force Major League Baseball to return next month's All-Star Game to Atlanta. U.S. District Judge Valerie E. Carponi ruled Thursday against a not-for-profit organization representing small businesses. The lawsuit filed May 31 alleged that Major League Baseball acted unconstitutionally when it moved the game from the Atlanta Braves stadium to Denver after Georgia Republicans enacted a restrictive new voting law. The rewrite of Georgia’s election rules followed former President Donald Trump’s repeated unproven claims of fraud after his presidential loss to President Joe Biden.

NBA – Bulls' White has shoulder surgery

Chicago Bulls guard Coby White has had surgery on his left shoulder after injuring it over the weekend. The team says White was hurt “while engaged in basketball activities away from the team” and will be reevaluated in four months. White averaged 15.1 points and 4.8 assists while starting 54 of the 69 games he played in last season.

Mariners 9, Tigers 6 – F/11 – Fraley's catch, single in 11th leads M's over Tigers 9-6

Jake Fraley made a game-saving catch in the ninth inning, then drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th to lead the Seattle Mariners over the Detroit Tigers 9-6. Fraley robbed Isaac Paredes of a game-ending homer with one out in the ninth, reaching well over the left-field fence to make the catch, then threw to first for an inning-ending double play. After both teams scored one run in the 10th, Fraley gave the Mariners a 5-4 lead with a one-out RBI single in the 11th.

Blue Jays 6, White Sox 2 – Grichuk homers, Blue Jays beat sloppy White Sox 6-2

Randal Grichuk hit a long home run and the Toronto Blue Jays took advantage of a season-high four errors by Chicago as well as a bases-loaded walk to beat the AL Central-leading White Sox 6-2. Grichuk hit a 451-foot drive leading off the second inning. Toronto rookie Alek Manoah threw five solid innings in his third major league start and the Blue Jays won despite another strong outing by Chicago’s Lance Lynn. The White Sox were sailing along with a 2-1 lead after Lynn struck out nine over seven innings. But a shaky bullpen and poor defense spoiled things for Chicago. Toronto scored three runs in the eighth and tacked on two more in the ninth.

Cubs 3, Padres 1 – Pederson, Arrieta lead Cubs to 3-1 win over Darvish, Padres

Joc Pederson and Sergio Alcantara homered, and Jake Arrieta threw five strong innings for the Chicago Cubs, who beat former teammate Yu Darvish and the San Diego Padres 3-1 to take two of three. The Cubs beat the Padres five times in six games in a 10-day stretch, including a three-game sweep at Wrigley Field last week. Darvish retired the first nine Cubs batters before Pederson hit a towering home run to right-center field leading off the fourth to tie the game at 1. Pederson mimicked Fernando Tatis Jr.’s stutter step as he approached third base on his trot. It was Pederson’s seventh.

MLB – Mets' Alonso claims MLB manipulating baseballs to harm FAs

New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso accused Major League Baseball of manipulating the baseballs to harm the earning potential for star free agents and players eligible for arbitration. Alonso’s comments came before New York’s game at Baltimore. He was responding to a question about the crackdown on sticky substances used by pitchers. Alonso's implied that the balls are friendlier to hitters in a year when a number of top pitchers are about to hit free agency, and vice versa.

MLB – White Sox return to 100% at Guaranteed Rate Field on June 25

The Chicago White Sox will return to 100% capacity at Guaranteed Rate Field starting with a June 25 game against Seattle. The announcement comes five days after the Chicago Cubs said they will move to 100% at Wrigley Field for their June 11 game against St. Louis. The White Sox say the June 25 game will be followed by postgame fireworks. Season ticket holders will return to their regular locations, and seating pods will be eliminated. More than half the 30 teams have announced returns to full capacity.

MLB – Baseball Hall delays induction to Sept 8. to allow crowd

Baseball’s Hall of Fame is moving this year’s induction ceremony for Derek Jeter, Larry Walker, Ted Simmons and the late Marvin Miller from July 25 to Sept. 8 so a crowd may attend as coronavirus restrictions ease. The ceremony will take place outdoors on the Hall’s lawn as a ticketed event with a limit on crowd size.
